How do you define a "Conservative"?

We know how they define a "Liberal". They have been very successful at corrupting the word and giving it new meaning.

After what this country has experienced with conservatism and "compassionate conservatism" for the last 30 years, how do they still speak with any credibility?

Why do some folks still buy the crap that this is a "conservative" or a "center-right" country after the fornication they have laid upon the American people?

Is that the best we can do?

It wasn't us who corrupted the word liberal, your actions and beliefs did that. If you have insane beliefs expect people to laugh at you.

1. John Kenneth Galbraith said

“The modern conservative is engaged in one of man's oldest exercises in moral philosophy; that is, the search for a superior moral justification for selfishness.”

That works for my definition.

I don't know how the right were so successful at vilifying the word "liberal." It seems like they've been defining the debate for some time. And I also disagree that we're a center-right country. People favor liberal policies when they're not identified as "liberal" (for instance, people support the idea of being able to bargain for better working conditions, as long as you don't mention the word "union.")

How is it that those of us who don't want money taken from other people are considered selfish, yet if you want to take by force from others you are somehow all heart?

I could think of some more but you get the idea.

Best description of liberals I've ever seen at DU.

6. Entrenched in beliefs

Unwilling to consider possibilities outside of their past experience. Unwilling to explore different ideas and solutions. Rigid.

Unwilling to exchange freedom for some false sense of equality.

People love the door to the candy store flung open in theory but sane ones understand how bad it is in reality.
That is why it is your side of the political spectrum that ALWAYS has to lie about what they want and believe.

Your own example proves it.

Want to be able to bargain for better working conditions?
"Sure!"

Understand it will mean that it means you will pay more for all goods and services with likely a lower quality product?
"Get lost!"

This from the people who are trying to make the OWS into a Woodstock-Kent State redux. Well just as long as it isn't them getting shot. They just want to be the ones listening to bad music, smoking dope and waxing indignant when someone does get dead.

OK,  how do you define a "Conservative"?

This is my version:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Classical_liberalism

It's call "classical liberalism" because today's liberalism, read "progressivism/Marxism/Socialism" is far out of fwhack rom what it used to be. It's what I'm trying to "conserve". Limited and small federal government. Most duties, as prescribed BY the US Constitution, but ignored by Progressives, both R and D, left up to the states. No nanny state. If there is to be welfare, leave it up to the states or local government. I'm also somewhat of a social liberal/libertarian. Fiscally, well, you liberals who buy into this "from each according to his ability, to each according to their need" and proponents of a proREgressive tax structure are clueless in terms of economics.

The more government grows, the less individual freedom we have. ... and you progressives are all too fond of limiting individual freedom. How do I know? I read the DUmp. Every.single.****ing.day.  Question is, what's going to happen when you push too much?

This Conservative wants Government to:

stay out of our lives
spend less
not spend money they don't have
have a budget
realize there comes a time when welfare goes from a temporary solution to 5 generations of dependency and they need to stop enabling that dependency
realize we have freedom of Religion not freedom from Religion
believe in common sense

Yep! todays progressivism aka regressivism is nothing at all like classic liberalism.

OK,  how do you define a "Conservative"?

The fundamental philosophical distinction is that Conservatives believe the existing socio-economic system may require adjustment from time to time, but is essentially preferable to any available alternative.  Liberals believe it is not, and that either basic structural change is necessary or the entire thing should be junked for something entirely different.

Republicans are not purely Conservatives and Democrats are not purely Liberal; for instance, many of the special interest voting blocks that make up the Democrat party, unions and welfare moochers particularly, have no interest in massive social change, they just have a financial self-interest in favoritism and handouts from the party with which they are aligned (This is a distinction which DUers in particular seem to miss with astonishing regularity).

A conservative: wants to be left alone to enjoy the fruits of his own labor though he will rise to defend his naiton or extend charity to neighbors and family but as he eschews multi-trillion-dollar statist solutions he lacks the requisite social moral consciousness and that makes him greedy.

A liberal: wants others to pay for his education, medicine, housing, food, utilities, clothing etc. and no others shall ever have more than he will. In exchange he offers to work 30 hours a week so long as he is provided 6 weeks vacation annually and can retire at the age of 45 with full pension and benefits. As he is willing to extend this to you as well he is to be considered the most magnanimous of all nature's creations.
