By Thomas Sowell
The Republican candidates' circular firing squad now seems to be using machine guns. Whoever the eventual "last man standing" turns out to be, he may not be standing very tall or very steadily on his feet -- and he may be a pushover for Barack Obama in the general election, thanks to fellow Republicans.
Whether you are a Democrat, a Republican or an independent, this is a very serious and historically crucial time for the United States of America. What Mitt Romney did or did not do when he was with Bain Capital, or what Newt Gingrich did or did not say to his ex-wife, are things that should be left for the tabloids.
With the economy still faltering and Iran on its way to getting nuclear bombs, surely we can get serious about the issues facing this nation. Or can we?
Mitt Romney's boasts about what he did at Bain Capital are as irrelevant as Newt Gingrich's demagogic attacks on Romney's role there. Romney is not running to become head of Bain Capital.
While Gingrich backed away from his demagoguery about Bain Capital, Romney is continuing to press ahead with his charges that Gingrich was a lobbyist for Freddie Mac. As someone who has been a consultant, but never a lobbyist, I know the difference.
As a consultant, I have offered advice to people in government and in private organizations, both businesses and non-profit organizations. But I have never gone to a government official to urge that official to make a decision favorable to those who were paying me, or to those for whom I did free consulting.
<excerpted>
I touched on this subject in another thread where I discussed WHY we can't really expect to end up with a real conservative candidate......now Sowell weighs in with much of the same philosophy........

The only person close to being a true conservative left in the race, IMO, is Santorum, and he doesn't have a chance. Newt may not be as much of a RINO as Mitt, but Newt can't hide his horn either.

I think the FAR bigger issue (as Dr. Sowell points out) is that we spend vastly too much internal energy as a group, fighting among each other as to the meaning of "conservative", than we do to positions on issues, and who can actually win......
YMMV.......

I'll vote for any of the GOP contenders that would not:
* start their careers in the homes of terrorists
* attend churches preaching overt racism
* steal a trillion dollars from the treasury to pay off cronies
* seek to destroy disfavored amendments of the constitution with schemes like Fast & Furious
* unlawfully seize entire industries
* impose runaway, unaccountable regulations
* overlook racist voter intimidation
* humiliate the US in front of world leaders
* stoke Arab anti-Israeli hatred
* dismantle the US military
* subsidize worthless layabouts
* flirt with OWS
HEY! That's all of them!

Very well said. I'm for any Republican who lays out his plan of action if elected and clearly states why he would do a better job. I'm so sick of all the accusations between Romney and Newt. However, Romney started it. Newt had been running a fairly positive campaign before Mittens used his extensive war chest to try to obliterate Newt during the first Newt popularity burst.

Thanks for posting this article, I have so must respect for Thomas Sowell, his opinion weighs heavily on me.

But what Mister Sowell fails to consider is that getting this out NOW takes away from things the 'Rats can use in the general election, and can make the eventual nominee nearly immune to DNC/Obama/MSM attacks.
As the saying goes, "the strongest steel is forged from the hottest fire."

Actually, the Republican candidates are simply creating video clips for the TV ads that one BILLION dollars worth of campaign funds Obama will use to purchase them with........Tom Sowell doesn't miss much......

I look at it this way--if the American people are that stupid...
Oh wait--they are. They put Obama into office in the first place. We're screwed.

Hoo-boy, sure has been a lot of anti-Newt coverage lately. It has made some strange allies of people like ABC reporters and Matt Drudge, for example. Of course, there's a risk with all the over-the-top coverage. I don't think people like it very much. It's going to end-up helping Gingrich, just like the nasty ex-wife coverage did last week.
Way to go guys. You're pissing people off and galvanizing support for Newt. I said during the last debate liveblog his opponents need to be careful: "That's not a layer of fat; that's 'corbomite.'" That's nerd-fu for a substance that blows up in your face when you try to attack.
Jonah Goldberg said in his Newtzilla piece a couple of days ago:
Six weeks ago, during the last Newt Gingrich surge, I wrote here that “conventional weapons are useless against Newtzilla. . . . Everything bad about Gingrich — the flip-flops, the wives, the ego — is known. Once voters have convinced themselves they can overlook that stuff, it’s hard to change their minds simply by repeating it.â€
In fact, repeating it makes him stronger. For many people, anyway.
...
We were talking about this in email. I just don't agree Romney is the better candidate against Obama. Romney got blindsided last week on something he should have been ready for. He's a brazen and dumb liar. He says things that are easily falsifiable. With Newt, his negatives are also baked in the cake. People have accepted that he's flawed. But Newt is also frightfully nimble, and he's becoming attack-proof. So I think Newt might be the better candidate against Obama. The fear Romney has a glass jaw is much greater in my mind.

Truth be told: apart from the free soundbites for Team Obama, I'm enjoying the vetting/bloodletting. It's healthy. I appreciate the threads started by BEG and TVDOC and everyone else as we try to find our center of gravity and/or g-spot.

I'm in the camp of anyone but 0bama, but I'm not thrilled with Newt or Romney.

I have a young one in my dept. I call him young one, as he was born the year I graduated HS, and so I can.
This YO has admitted to voting democrat, the only times he has been eligible to vote. I work in an HR dept, and am the only conservative. I know this, because the libs out themselves. I keep my opinions to myself at work, since I value my job.
Apparently, the YO has been to a Ron Paul rally, brought by a friend. He is now digging Paul. I hold hope that by the time the election comes around, he might keep on moving more right. Considering his parents are just a bit older than me, and bombarded the little buddy with NPR all of his life I can't help but be happy to see he moved over to Paul. He just needs to scootchie just a little bit further.

Plenty of lefties and liberal Democrats on the Nutz bandwagon... nothing special about them. When Paul doesn't make it past Super Tuesday, your buddy will most likely go back to voting for Democrats.

Don't be such a naysayer. He might just surprise us.
