He was wielding a metal bar that almost appeared to be an ice ax and tearing up a restaurant. And when cops told him to drop it, he refused. That’s when the shots rang out.

“He” is a vandal. And it all went down on Monday outside a Carl’s Jr. in Monterey Park, CA. And we know about it because bystanders caught it all on video and posted it to YouTube.

California Man Shot and Killed by Cops Outside Carls Jr.

KTLA-TV reports (http://www.ktla.com/news/landing/ktla-monterey-park-carls-jr-ois,0,3618749.story) on the incident that left the assailant dead, even after being tasered:

The shooting happened about 9:30 a.m. at Carl’s Jr. restaurant near the intersection of Cesar Chavez Boulevard and Atlantic Avenue.

Officers responded to a report that a man was breaking windows at the restaurant.

When the officers arrived, they saw people running out of the restaurant, according to a news release issued by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

A man walked out of the restaurant holding a three-foot-long metal bar, police said.

Officers ordered the man to drop the bar and he refused. One of the officers shocked the man with a Taser, to little effect.

The man then came toward the officers and swung the bar twice, according to the news release.

That’s when the officers shot the man.

One officers shot the man five times, and a second officer shot the man five more times after he fell to the pavement.

Paramedics rushed him to a hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

after the failed tazer shot, looks like he turned towards the cop behind him and raised his "crowbar".

was the shooting justified?

i say absolutely. the cops identified themselves, he refused their orders, and made an aggressive move.
i have no doubt that his family will eventually sue though.

It looks like the shooting was justified, but it seemed like a few extra shots were fired.  At that range, one or two should have been a kill shot.

I didn't see him swing the bar once. He raised it, so yes, he deserved to be incapacitated. 5 times while standing and 5 times while on the ground? Yeah, a little excessive.

a little excessive.
i don't think so. i mean if your gonna shoot your gun you might as well finish the mag. besides cleaning your gun is the same if you just shoot it twice or you shoot it ten times.

You want to know why the cops emptied their weapons (so to speak)?

Adrenaline.

Exactly.  I bet the cop couldn't even recall how many shots he fired immediately after the event.  It's not uncommon at all.

Looked like the perp. was about to bury that ice axe into one of the officers. Like Sparky said, the K9 handler just started squeezing off as many rounds as he could in split seconds.

Kids, this is what happens when you trash a business, then you continue your activities to guys with loaded firearms.

One less scumbag on the streets.

I wonder if the poor victim's family will sue for excessive use of force?

I find it ironic that they seem to have cuffed the guy.  Was he even still alive at that point?

If this country wasn't full of lawyers hunting a lawsuit, the owner of the establishment could have shot him and saved the cops the trouble.

Couldn't really see what they were doing to the guy while he was on the ground, but if it were me, I'd have cuffed the guy too.

The thing I thought when he came through that door was he was on some serious shit. PCP or something else that turned him into a whackjob.

Carl's Jr. doesn't allow their employees to be armed while on the job.

I'd agree with you on his being hopped up on something.  He slapped away those taser leads like swatting a fly away.

Well, there's a reason not to do business with them. If you are in there, no one has your back.

I think that you will find that very few large employers allow their workers to carry while on the job.  Too much potential legal liability.

Yup. My employer has gone to the extent of forbidding firearms as a corporate policy, not just a local one.

I've put my manager on notice that there are certain cell sites that I will not go to after dark without a police escort.  I'm not allowed to carry in my company vehicle and the job ain't worth dying over.

Originally he just said, "well, just lock yourself in the compound once you get there".

My response was that a chain link fence isn't going to stop a bullet.

its probably a department policy
since cops cant legally pronounce people dead, they have to deem him alive. well if is "alive" they either have to detain him in cuffs or keep shooting. since some people around here, /cough,catsmtrods,cough/ thinks its a waste of taxpayers money, they chose to cuff him. now people /cough,rich t,cough/ are complaining about cuffing him.
come on guys you cant have it both ways.  :stirpot:

Look, he coiled up his body with a large, metal blade as his energy focal point within 4 or 5 ft. of an uniformed police officer and he got struck. Open and close...

I wasn't complaining about it.  Merely commenting about finding it ironic.

We need a "bite me"  emoticon.  LOL

Anything worth shooting once is worth shooting 12 times and then kicking a couple of times.  If he wasn't acting like an asshole none of that would have happened.

Justified.  The guy could have harmed many of the customers at Carl's Jr and then he took his aggression out on the police.  He deserved it.

Not watching the video right now.  The little one is still awake.  If she hears gun fire, she will say, "BOND!"  and think I'm watching a 007 movie.

I watched the movie and noticed the K9 officer keeping his dog on leash.    Why did he not turn the dog loose to bring down a crazy at that time.   The crazy had just a metal bar, not a weapon as a gun or knife, why not send the dog in and end this all without firepower?

Is this not why we have the K9 to stop those crazes who are not armed with a weapon other then a gun or knife??

Darn the dog could stopped all this at the get go before any shots were fired.    That is what the dogs are there for trained and know their job.

Questions on why the dog was not let loose here.

i dont know why they tried electricty before the gunpowder and lead.
besides i dont know if there is anything in the constitution about "weapon wielding assaultant maintains the right to get a chance to defend against a German Shepard before being forced to defend against a Israeli pistol"
