First, let me lead with the caveat that I'm old enough to remember when all political conventions were "brokered", i.e. most states didn't have primaries, state party bosses met at the convention and selected the nominees largely behind closed doors......"in smoke-filled rooms.......", delegate ballots were ultimately cast to provide the "official" result.
I've mentioned before that I have relatives and friends living and working "inside the beltway", in Washington, DC, a few even working on Capitol Hill.
The insider talk recently seems to be growing in volume regarding a brokered Republican convention......apparently for two primary reasons:
First: After last week, the RNC establishment "elite" (read: RINO's) are scared shitless of a Gingrich victory in the primaries, for the simple reason that, in their jaded view, they cannot control a Newt Gingrich in the White House.......they perceive him as a "loose cannon", that can't reliably be trusted to follow the party line, and just might go off half-cocked and do something "conservative".......or even worse "controversial". particularly, failing to reach across the aisle to compromise with the opposition.
Second: Their establishment candidate Mitt Romney, even after five years of practice running for president, is starting to grow threadbare, and his rhetoric on the stump is failing to impress the electorate.......which raises the real possibility that he may actually lose to Obama. Romney's position on issues is so nebulous in areas that the voters have difficulty distinguishing his candidacy from his Democrat opposition. Further, his recent debate performance is no longer the polished, confident presentation of the party anointed.......he comes across as petty, disorganized, shrill, and defensive.
In light of these events, in the back halls of the RNC, consideration is being given to circumventing the primary results from the states entirely, and "brokering" either a completely new candidate to the nomination, or overriding the primary result if Gingrich is the ultimate winner, installing Romney. Should this admittedly remote possibility come to pass, there would be great consternation among the Republican electorate, not to mention the TEA party group.
I should add that this is not unprecedented, it's happened many times in the past......but the distant past. In your opinion what would the reaction of the voters be?

If the DC Elite Republican Establishment picks Romney over the real winner, then screw it. I'm not voting for him. If he wins legitimately, then I will.

Ditto.
I believe it would be the death of the GOP. The Tea Party would bolt, Paulbots would bitch and moan and vote for 0bama anyway.
It'd be about as popular as Obamacare, and about as wanted.
-
Newsflash, doc. The Paultards are going to vote (mostly) for Obama regardless. Trust me, I saw a lot of his supporters when I was doing door-knocks for McCain in 2008. College types who registered Republican or switched from Democrat to independent to vote for him, then switched back. Then there are the few who actually believe what he says but don't bother to look behind his whining to see that he's as full of shit as a Christmas turkey.
Sorry, but the primaries have only been around for about 60 years. We survived for almost 170 without them before they came along.

Ron Paul came in second place in the NH Democratic (http://www.thegreenpapers.com/P12/NH-D) primary.
That should tell you what you need to know about Dr. Ron's Goon Squad.
-
I would be happy with a brokered convention "IF" they selected Jim DeMitt.

And Mitt was 3rd. Awesome.

Romney would not win the general if that happens, enough of the base would revolt and refuse to vote for him that he would fall short; conversely, the currently-lackadaisical Democrat base would be re-energized by the chaos in Republican ranks that such an outrageous manipulation would produce.

Whichever candidate the party puts up I would go along with it. I never get too wrapped up in the primaries anyway, I've experienced the letdown when my favorite candidate gets beat or drops out too many times over the years. Also, things can sometimes work out better in the end if I don't get my way since I can be wrong every now and then--While the first president I voted for was Reagan, that was after I had been all for his opponent George H. Bush during the lead-up and Reagan turned out to be a better president. I'll vote for whoever gets the nomination and it doesn't matter to me how he gets the nomination. I'm voting against Sir Golfsalot.

Agreed

Now yer talking. The 4 squishes still in the race calling themselves conservatives is as depressing as having Rudy McRomney as the frontrunner last time.

Your points are correct, but would you vote ABO if the GOP blatantly disregarded the results of this whole process?
-
I will have a hard voting for this Yankee pr!ck even if he wins it honestly. I don't know what I would do if they stole it from Newt and gave it to Mitt. I think it would be suicidal and many conservatives would stay home. If the Repubs pulled that dirty trick, it would assure Obama's reelection. Millions would exit the Repub party.

So, you've got the Duncan Hunter fan club up to a foursome?
-
if they threw mitt on the ballot to snub newt...
what stops newt from going independent and letting "the people" vote him in that way. same way lieberman won his senate seat back and that lady in alaska with the write ins.
if they did indeed snub newt, the people would follow him. i understand it splits the vote. and a split vote probably wouldnt beat barry but if it went down that way, and barry won, it would be on the RNC. and as far as im concerned should end the republican party. TEA Party would have to step up and become a full fledged national party.

You sound like a bitter Fredhead. How's his lobbying to demolish the electoral college going?

Nothing stops Newt, except the fact that it virtually guarantees another 4 years for teh ReichsMessiah.
We had a similar situation on a smaller scale here in Colorado, where Tom Tancredo, a former Republican congressman with a conservative track record ran on the American Taxpayer's Party, after getting tired of all of the sick, twisted RINO politics. Well, the GOP ran a real carpetbagging scumbag, a former Kansas LEO who lost his credentials for fraud and extortion while in uniform. They never ran any kind of campaign for him, and if anybody were to mention his name, the response would be "Dan who?" But he did exactly what he was supposed to, and sucked away the vote of every numbskull who cast his vote for whoever had an (R) beside their name, from the real conservative contender, and as a result, the Moonbat Democrat got the election nod for the governor's race, with ~47% of the vote.
See, the cocksucker faction of the Republican party would rather have a Democrat win the race than a conservative. And they sure as hell will do whatever it takes to keep conservatives fearful of leaving the damned reservation.

That is true but millions would desert the Repub party if the nomination was stolen and register as independents for the next election. The Repub could kiss their ass goodbye.

I don't think that the GOP learned a damn thing from the elections results in 08.
