I don't know whether this belongs here, General Discussions, or Religion.
I'm pissed at my American Catholic bretheren. Before I begin, most of you know that I'm a fallen back-in Catholic. I love my faith. It's my fellow Catholics that I'm pissed at...
54 percent of my asshole brothers and sisters in faith chose to support and vote for Barack Obama.
Now, on many Catholic blogs I frequent, I'm seeing this...
HHS has ordered all private insurance to cover birth control etc.
U.S. BISHOPS VOW TO FIGHT HHS EDICT
Unconscionable to force citizens to buy contraceptives against their will
No change in limited exemption, only delay in enforcement
Matter of freedom of conscience, freedom of religion

Sure. They're fighting against it now. Yet many chose to support his election.
It's no wonder the Reformation happened. You give bishops political power, and they screw us over every time. Every damn time. In South and Central America, they use "liberation theology," get in bed with the communists, then get slaughtered, machine-gunned at Mass when they're no longer useful.
I love my faith. I really do. But wow. When are American bishops going to wake up?

It's fine here (for the time being, depending on how the discussion goes)......and to answer your bolded question........they aren't going to wake up.........they are called to a "higher order", and often use local politics to attain goals, the most noteworthy being "charity and equality", which they perceive the Democrats the best vehicle to encourage.......this has always been my pet peeve with the Roman Church, over the centuries they have attempted to attain their goals through countless unholy alliances........and it continues.
I think in their well-intentioned quest, they frequently forget that "the lesser of two evils" is still evil.......
I do not wish to insult your faith, however, long ago the Vatican became a political and financial organization......which just happens to reside in a church........
There is certainly nothing more faith and awe-inspiring than the liturgy and the Mass.......however what incompasses it is......something else.......IMHO.

I would love to see the Catholic Church stick to their principles on this. Drop the fight. Close the hospitals and strongly recommend to any doctors/nurses who are catholic to quit. Issue a press release stating exactly why this is. A Papal Bull may even be appropriate.

how did we get to "force citizens to buy contraceptives against their will" from making insurance companies cover their costs?

Because every insured in the pool has to kick in on anything covered, same principle as opposing taxpayer-funded abortion, really.
My Dad's family is Catholic, all hereditary Democrats because of where they live. I don't talk to them much except at weddings and funerals because they just aren't that close, so I don't know if they voted for Obama, but I classify them as "Enablers."

muslim faith is against consumption of alcohol.
a muslim pays taxes
a congressman gets a stipend for meals.
the congressman buys a beer at lunch with his taxpayer reimbursed stipend.
therefore the muslim has to pay for alcohol against his religion
so... we should take away all stipends??
-
This is a big part of the reason I am a fallen away -and staying away- catholic.
I simply cannot fathom how anyone calling themselves a christian of any stripe can support the democrat party. :hammer:
Hypocrites, every last one of them.

That's actually a crappy analogy, since the money is given to the Congressman not to specifically reimburse him for alcohol per se, but just a meal cost (And it's probably a perdiem rather than direct reimbursement even for that).
I do not believe Congress is owed beer and travel money, just travel money.

Catholic hospitals are now caught in this same bind. Most supported Obamacare because it was believed to make health costs more reasonable for all, and make it easier for the hospitals to pay for all the free work they do. But now they are being ordered to start covering contraceptives and sterilization procedures, something radically against their beliefs. It's just a matter of time before they will face the choice to start giving abortions or lose Medicare dollars...

The Catholic Church of course employs many laymen in all sorts of occupations within all sorts of organizations, and most of these laymen get health insurance as part of their benefits.
It's been proposed that if medical procedures going contrary to Catholic beliefs and practices become mandatory, that the Catholic organizations drop the health insurance they pay, and instead just "up" the wages of their laymen employees so they individually can buy health insurance.
But I dunno if anything's been done about that.

i agree its a crappy analogy. but im sure alcohol supplied at govt balls is on tax payers dime.
i just disagree with the "fight" against "being forced to pay for BC"
the argument needs to be against mandated insurance and other mandates for private companies. not specific mandates because they indirectly make people do things they are against.
i wish someone could tell me how many people that would petition against "forcing me to pay for BC" actually have insurance that already covers BC for those willing to get it. In effect using an insurance that ALREADY willingly pays for BC before being mandated by the govt. i only have ONE financially available health insurance plan to choose from. i choose to purchase it. it currently covers BC.
EDIT: i have reread some posts and think i misunderstood some stuff. I did not know there are catholic hospitals. and the posts above lead me to believe that the bishops speaking on behalf of their hospital system are against the mandates. i understand that side of it.

I don't know. My Catholic hospital decreased our coverage from a PPO organization that included many doctors in Kansas and almost all doctors in the states south and east of here, and replaced it with an HMO that has no Kansas doctors. They are basically forcing us all to see only the doctors that work for our own hospital system. As far as I know, there has been no change to the refusal to cover contraceptives, sterilization, abortion or abortion drugs...but I guess we'll see what 2014 brings. :(

Catholic hospitals do not provide insurance that covers contraceptives, abortifacients, sterilization, or abortion. Many of us have spent decades in healthcare specifically because we can do a good job without being forced to support abortion or other measures that are against our beliefs. In the government take-over of Christian conscience, this ability is greatly threatened. No one should be able to demand that I buy insurance from a company that slaughters infants...or that I be forced to assist in slaughtering infants in order to support myself and my family.
I suppose it would be one thing if I'd chosen to get training a take a job that would include abortion, but I didn't.

i agree.
and the govt should not make private companies do anything.
period.
