Sandhill cranes overwinter on Platte River
Last edited Fri Jan 20, 2012, 12:59 PM USA/ET - Edit history (2)
A rare and spectacular thing has happened along the Platte River west of Grand Island: People have seen and heard flocks of sandhill cranes in January.
About 1,000 sandhill cranes have overwintered along the river near the National Audubon's Rowe Sanctuary at Gibbon.
The majestic gray birds with red caps should be hundreds of miles south where it's warm at this time of year -- and not in Nebraska.
"I've been there 50 years and I've never seen it," said noted ornithologist and author Paul Johnsgard of Lincoln.

Proof that global warming is a hoax*.
(Do I *need* a sarcasm tag?)

6. Canada Geese around here too
in SW Missouri. It is like they never left. Usually they have flown off to winter in more southerly climes. I think some may stay, but there are two "lakes" near me (they call them lakes, but they are more like oversized ponds that form part of the landscaping in a subdivision) that have a LOT of ducks and geese, and especially Canada Geese. When I lived in Tallahassee, I saw them in winter. But not here in SW Missouri.

8. There is right wing sociopath who lives near there. I wonder what he thinks.
Up there near the roof of Nebraska, all alone in his life devoid of human contact, hopefully he gets to enjoy seeing these birds as the river flows by his back yard.
Stinky the dude is obviously obsessed with coach. His man crush is worse than those Ron Paul goons that show up whenever his name is mentioned.

Fixed. I hear they taste like chicken imagine that.
I saw Canadian geese flying North the other day. I just figured a tsunami was going to hit their winter home or something. Frank I would be sooooo jealous of you if I didn't hate flat land so much. Your backyard is incredible!
I hesitated to start this thread, for fear of prompting another of those "kiss my ass" photos from coach.
The trauma caused by the last one has just started to wear off.
Instead, we got these awesome shots of the outdoor wilderness.
They're great, and an enormous improvement.

Many flocks of migrating birds simply don't anymore, because of the easy availability of food. It has little to do with climate.

Your backyard is incredible!Flat? The Sandhills are definitely not flat. Very little of Nebraska is, that's why I-80 follows the river bed through the state. I've driven through the mountains from Wyoming to Washington and never ran across a really scary road. The scariest road I ever drove was in the Sandhills. On a mountain, the shoulder only falls away on one side. In the Sandhills, some of those roads have mountain-drops on both sides! :o :o

I know...right!?!
Frank I'm worried about your safety.

Actually, it is kind of discombobulating. That's why I always respond to him in italian. Anyway, I highly doubt he will send anyone to kill for political muscle. If he did, according to threads past, Bush, Cheney, the marines who pissed on the taliban would've gotten whacked. You can piss him off til the cows come home, he won't do anything.
Not so much the thought of any violence from the old dude, but remember, he's a caporegime for the d'Alessandro crime family of Baltimore and San Francisco, and probably has a whole telephone directory of younger healthier hit-men he can call upon--which is why many up here on the roof of Nebraska are always watching out for automobiles with Maryland license-plates and Italian-looking people inside.
