Sandhill cranes overwinter on Platte River
Last edited Fri Jan 20, 2012, 12:59 PM USA/ET - Edit history (2)

A rare and spectacular thing has happened along the Platte River west of Grand Island: People have seen and heard flocks of sandhill cranes in January.

About 1,000 sandhill cranes have overwintered along the river near the National Audubon's Rowe Sanctuary at Gibbon.

The majestic gray birds with red caps should be hundreds of miles south where it's warm at this time of year -- and not in Nebraska.

"I've been there 50 years and I've never seen it," said noted ornithologist and author Paul Johnsgard of Lincoln.

6. Canada Geese around here too

in SW Missouri. It is like they never left. Usually they have flown off to winter in more southerly climes. I think some may stay, but there are two "lakes" near me (they call them lakes, but they are more like oversized ponds that form part of the landscaping in a subdivision) that have a LOT of ducks and geese, and especially Canada Geese. When I lived in Tallahassee, I saw them in winter. But not here in SW Missouri.

Since the overwhelming tsunami of prosperity given to the world by President Reagan (the echoes of which we still enjoy today), countless thousands of suburban subdivisions have been built, where people can better enjoy that prosperity, far from the democrat hordes.

Those developments include countless millions of small lakes and ponds, constructed to improve esthetics and assist in drainage systems. Likewise, the prosperity led to construction of thousands of golf course developments, and their attendant water features.

Suburbanites like to feed the geese and ducks, resulting in a population explosion among geese, especially, and a flock of millions that no longer migrates, due to the abundant food handouts.

Many states have established late summer goose hunting seasons, in an attempt to control these non-migrating resident flocks, but to no avail. They continue to grow, and the damage they do to private property has increased greatly over the past couple of decades.

The phenomenon is an outgrowth of Republican prosperity, but DUmpmonkeys see it as a sign of impending doom.

8. There is right wing sociopath who lives near there. I wonder what he thinks.

Up there near the roof of Nebraska, all alone in his life devoid of human contact, hopefully he gets to enjoy seeing these birds as the river flows by his back yard.

Hey, ****face.

It's not even 2:00 p.m. central time yet, and already I've had eleven people out here today.

Probably more visitors than you get in a week, or even a month, old dude.

My back yard's better than your back yard, ****face.

Enjoy it, dude.

I hesitated to start this thread, for fear of prompting another of those "kiss my ass" photos from coach.

The trauma caused by the last one has just started to wear off.

Instead, we got these awesome shots of the outdoor wilderness.

They're great, and an enormous improvement.

They're even better when basted with the rendered fat of young spotted owls.

Served with a fresh pate made from the livers of bald eagles on a rare prairie grass seed cracker, it's to die for.

I saw Canadian geese flying North the other day.  I just figured a tsunami was going to hit their winter home or something.  Frank I would be sooooo jealous of you if I didn't hate flat land so much.  Your backyard is incredible!

Actually, the river, the waterfowl, and the three cloud photographs are from the back yard.

The rest are nearby, excepting the one of the old dude's pal standing on a hill; that's much further west.

The ones with windmills and cattle are in the "front yard," actually across the road from here, and can be seen thusly when one's standing atop the William Rivers Pitt.

Great pictures, Frank.  That is such good country.

I dunno.  I lived way west of Grand Island on the N. Platte River and we had cranes and Canada geese there every winter.  I spend most of my time well north of there now and we have Canada geese winter here.  It's a whole lot warmer than their summer habitat is this time of year.

Many flocks of migrating birds simply don't anymore, because of the easy availability of food. It has little to do with climate.

Anybody who has driven through a parking lot where a fast food joint is located knows this. Why would a seagull smash mussels on rocks, when someone is willing to toss french fries out the car window for them to grab ? Why would birds migrate south to be able to peck at the ground or dive for fish when people keep the land free of snow, and ice broken for ships to pass easily ?

Yes, people are the reason for changes in migratory patterns, but not for the reasons you believe.

And the migration of birds is triggered by length of day and sunlight angle, not so much by a day's weather.

Our hummingbirds disappear between September 25 and October 5, no matter if we're in a 90 degree heat wave.

We've always had geese and ducks that spend all year here and some that fly in from the north. All the open farm fields have plenty of food available.

Flat?  The Sandhills are definitely not flat.  Very little of Nebraska is, that's why I-80 follows the river bed through the state.  I've driven through the mountains from Wyoming to Washington and never ran across a really scary road.  The scariest road I ever drove was in the Sandhills.  On a mountain, the shoulder only falls away on one side.  In the Sandhills, some of those roads have mountain-drops on both sides!  :o :o

For flat land, you need southwest Kansas.  It's so flat, during the summer you can see trucks and trains on the horizon, quite obviously several feet above the earth.

Oh, and in the years I lived on the Platte, we always had geese.  I can't say we had cranes, but we always had geese in the winter.

Had a big "V" of geese fly by earlier this afternoon.
They were headed south-east.
Pix remind me of where I was born and raised.
Kinda miss it.

Actually, it is kind of discombobulating.

Not so much the thought of any violence from the old dude, but remember, he's a caporegime for the d'Alessandro crime family of Baltimore and San Francisco, and probably has a whole telephone directory of younger healthier hit-men he can call upon--which is why many up here on the roof of Nebraska are always watching out for automobiles with Maryland license-plates and Italian-looking people inside.

That's why I always respond to him in italian.  Anyway, I highly doubt he will send anyone to kill for political muscle.  If he did, according to threads past, Bush, Cheney, the marines who pissed on the taliban would've gotten whacked.  You can piss him off til the cows come home, he won't do anything.

Well, I dunno.

Obsession drives people to extremes, and I can very well see where franksolich would be an easier target for the old dude, when compared with the president or vice-president of the United States, or any Marine.

And remember, in the primitive perception, franksolich is a larger threat than he really is in real life, and so he needs erased from the planet.

I'll never forget the time--it was about two years ago--that the neighbor read a primitive comment about my legendary prowess, and almost fell off the chair laughing.

The old dude's of course aware of my greatest vulnerability, and that I live way out in the country--and that, coupled with his absurd notion that I imperil primitivity, I could very well see where he might think it worth his while to send his associates Leg-Breaker Luigi, Mouth-Smasher Manny, and Crush-Bones Charlie all the way out here, or at least subcontract the job to another organized-crime outfit in Kansas City or Denver.

One has to be really careful when dealing with people who absurdly feel threatened.
