What to do about obvious trolls that haven't shown their butt yet?
This is where maybe the jury system doesn't really work so well.
I'm talking about the guys that make minor posts in the state forums and such. "Interesting." "+1," etc.
Should we alert on them or not?
What should a good DU'er do when we spot an obvious freeper that hasn't really said much of anything yet?
Just let 'me be?
Awaiting guidance.

1. I'm a little fuzzy on how a troll can be obvious yet not shown himself...
I do not expect either the Admins or the MIRTeam is going to ban anyone who has not actually done anything wrong. Building up a post count and then being a troll is a foolish waste of their time, it does nothing to protect anyone from being banned for being a troll. Let them waste their time.

18. this was a real issue in the waning days of DU2, and we were encouraged to alert on them
People that posted a couple hundred times in a day or two, yet had not posted a message body yet. Only a single word, or less, in the subject line of each one. Mostly in the state, and other "out-of-the-way," forums. Many were serial trolls where each user name followed some certain convention.
I guess it's taking me a little while to get used to the DU3 paradigm.
Carry on.

19. Holy shit....
People need to get a life I was unaware of this going on (in this manner) on DU2 or that anyone other then mods were looking out for it. I don't think it would hurt, if you see something like this to give a ToS alert with some good comments and links to some (damn... If they are going posting like that, you could not get them all) examples. Then the Admins and/or the MIRTeam could take a look. I would not expect a Jury to do anything as it sounds like at this point, the troll has not broken civility rules but with the ToS added in, it will go to someone who can do something.

2. Alert for community standards, check the Terms of Service box, and say something like: "Jury: This new member is building up a posting record with a series of meaningless minor posts in the state forums and such. "Interesting." "+1," etc. I suspect it is a troll; please do not vote to hide this particular post, which will alert the troll that he has been spotted, but instead leave it. I have checked the Terms of Service box, so this alert will be sent to admin after you vote to leave it, who can fully check if this is a troll, and ban him if he is."

3. Very good advice
Though I find trolls to be entertaining, well, truth be known, I find DUers playing with them is what is so entertaining.

4. Some new members might
Not feel confident enough to express opinions yet or they may just be trying to be supportive. Too subjective to jump to conclusions. Trolls reveal themselves eventually and are quickly ousted and posts scrubbed.

5. Interesting.
You know I have done that myself
I will read a very good post and just put that in because it is something I want to think over. Maybe they are just getting their DU legs. Trolls always get outed, sooner or later.

7. If they aren't saying any more than that, you have no idea whether
they're trolls or not. So, the answer is, I think, to do nothing. If a poster later does something trollish, then alert.
On DU2, you had to make a certain number of replies before posting an OP. That no longer is the case.

8. The minimum number has been brought back
Hence the slight problem the DUzy Awards ID had: http://www.democraticunderground.com/100264864#post39

15. Maybe a pre-troll detection team, like in Minority Report.
We could have a team of psychics who work with MIRT to detect thought waves. Then BAM! Get those suckers before they strike.

We have had moles there since DU1. I am a late comer and I have had moles in place since 2005. So far, not one has been outed and TS'd.

I've just invented a pair of 3D decoder glasses that will help DUmmies detect obvious hidden trolls. Send $5 and SASE and get your free pair. That's a bargain if they're the same glasses that let you see through clothing.
Sending Invisible Healing White Light for Invisible Trolls!!+1
I see what you did there. :hi5:

I bought a pair from an ad in the back of a Supperman comic book.
