Every day I marvel at how poor and middle class Republicans vote against their self-interests
Last edited Tue Jan 17, 2012, 02:42 PM USA/ET - Edit history (1)
I've read the studies showing that Republicans are people who are led by fears, who love authority, who don't feel comfortable unless there is an enemy. However, there's another school of thought about why people whose very life is precariously balancing on a high wire choose to vote for those who persistently destroy American life for the poor and middle class, and ensure they never get out of the hole. It is this: that poor and middle class Republicans don't like being made to feel stupid.
The argument kinda goes like this:
Republicans talk on the same level as people who don't have a great deal of education. They don't bother people with statistics, with numbers, and they engage in a good amount of name-calling. They also use a lot of "us versus them" (them being the enemy, of course), which makes the poor and middle class Republican feel important. The argument also poses that Democrats use statistics, numbers, and tend not to name call. Democrats tend to the label groups as the enemy far less than Republicans do. As a result, poor and middle class Republicans feel less important, and less intelligent when listening to Democrats, and think of them as elitist.
But this brings me to another question:
HOW did poor and middle class Republicans come to regard education as elitist? WHEN did education become something to be despised, rather than something to be strived for? WHY did ignorance become something to be proud of? I grew up in a family within which EDUCATION AND KNOWLEDGE were things to be sought after, admired, desired, ideals, not things to be envied and to hate someone for if they employed that intelligence.
WHY NOT HERE? Why must intelligence be hidden and relegated to a lower level? Why do poor and middle class Republicans feel that lack of education is desirable?
Yes,we have seen the genius of the DUmp over and over again. ::)

1. I think it is also a bit of this
penned most eloquently by John Dickinson: "...don't forget that most men without property would rather protect the possibility of becoming rich, than face the reality of being poor."
Yes,we all want to be rich so badly we obsess about taking it from anyone that has wealth so it can be given to us.

So much for name calling. :rotf:

10. I'm not so sure. I got quite close to a right wingnut, and he really has no ability to discuss
issues. He goes mute and/or gets angry when it comes to discussing issues that involve statistics, actual dollars and cents, and numbers.
That look is called incredulous over the the nonsense you were spouting.

24. Yes, that was me. And what flips me out is their unwillingness to even discuss anything that
borders on facts. It's a threat to them. I can't figure out if they feel it's a trick. I do recall him saying that there's "no reason" to tell the truth to children about U.S. history, because it will make them anti-American. They adore censorship.

13. Well, I guess that they have
every right to be as ignorant and uneducated as they wish in pursuit of their "liberty" to be serfs to the economic royalists. Ignorant can be fixed, but stupid is forever. The question remains why these people are, in economic terms, paying arsonists to burn down their houses.
I came from a working class background and the value of education was pounded into my head by both of my parents from a very young age. Those who don't value education are, IMO, beneath contempt.
So says a person sporting Marx for an av.
You should educate yourself on the history of what marxisim has brought and the misery of it.

6. Yes, but in all honesty, they're cutting off their nose to spite their face. A sign of stupidity.
Psychological identification by someone, that will cause that same person's lifestyle (and that of his/her family to suffer), particularly when it's psychological identification with entities that seek to do harm to the suffering, is just frikkin' stupid.

They may be voting against your interpretation of what their self interests should be based on criteria that you defined, but then that's just them voting against your self interests.
A rare moment of clarity.

It's funny how every perjorative descriptor she used could just as easily be applied to Democrats, Regressives, Liberals, et al., and not lose one iota of meaning...improve it, actually.
The basic conceptual problem is that the 'Facts' and 'Statistics' she mentions are from Democrat talking points, not objective reality, and are selected, massaged, and slanted from the git-go by their own little Ministry of Truth, and everyone but the Dems realizes it. She doesn't realize the reason nobody will argue with them when they whip out those points is that nobody but other Dems are willing to buy the package and lend any credence to the supposed facts and stats.

My son has had a total of 5 years of college yet he's a MOONBAT just like Sarah. Matter of fact, he brought home a few Sarah's in his day. I banned them from my house and have banned him too.
Education doesn't make you smart. Sometimes it makes you like Sarah.
Unlike his father, my son has no work ethic, something I've noticed runs rampant amongst DUmmies therefore he shall always struggle and be poor.
Yes, actions do have consequences.

I received my education while in the military, and finished up when got out. I wudn't havin' none of that librul indoctrination. HOW did poor and middle class Republicans come to regard education as elitist? When so called educated people started to think that they knew everything, I'm sorry but a degree in womyn's studies does not make one an expert on anything
A better question is, when did hard work and success become something to be despised, rather than something to to be strived for. Why did laziness become something to be proud of? I grew up in a family which hard work, and success was to be sought after, desired, not something to be hated for
Like most liberals, Sarah you have no idea what we are talking about when we chastise educated people, it's not the fact that they went to college, it's the fact that they think just because they could regurgitate the right answers on enough tests, that they think they know everything.
If any of you goons ever got a degree that you actually could get a job with, you would realize that 99% of what you learn about that profession will come after you get the degree. Most knowledge throughout our lives comes from life and our experiences, not from a class room.
This notion that we be stoopid cuz we don't have degrees in basket weaving is insane. The fact that you think you can asses what our best interests are, is laughable at best, and arrogant as hell at worst.
Just who the hell do you and any of you freaks think you are to tell us what our interests are anyway? Only the individual can know what the hell is in his or her best interests.

How is limiting my health care options in my best interest? Or forcing me to take what they think is good enough? How is taxing the hell out of people I want a job from or people I want to sell a good or service to helping me? Or having to beg some dumbass gov worker to fix a problem they caused or to give me a benifit that I have to apply for because they messed up the job market. How is that good for my dignaty? How helpful is it for them to give every idiot a school loan and making the cost of even a trade school rival that of a starter home? Don't get me started on how super helpful they were in makng sure every one owns a home.
And please stop claiming you use facts and stats when speaking. All I ever hear is rehashed jr high appeals to ( some unknown ) athority or emotion. You all dont even bring up pie charts on your cell phones. "Atleast Obama is doing something!" is not a argument but that is pretty much all I get. I used to try to politlly engage but I would get cut off in mid sentance and a new isue is tossed out.

We vote against YOUR best interests.
You have NO idea what OUR interests are, because you have no idea what FREEDOM is like. The only freedoms DUmmies know how to exercise are the freedom to be WRONG, and the freedom to be STUPID!
Both have been exercised to the point of exhaustion!

Yep, "repukes" are the name callers. Pres. BushMcChimpyHitler got that name from the "tolerant" party. The "educated" party is the one that swears unborn humans are "bumps" or "lumps of cells" until they magically appear from the womb looking like a baby. The party that "votes for their own interests" is the party that votes themselves more and more taxpayer money because they just can't stand the thought of someone keeping the money he or she earns.
I love that confusion between educated and having a college degree. ::) A degree in something practical is nice, it's a good way to get a decent job (but you still have to lay off the drugs and drink to keep it, Sarah.) However, there is no degree that causes you to become "educated." All a degree does is guarantee you can regurgitate what the teacher wants you to know. Education usually comes from everything else. The only people that never attain any real education are those that :stoner:. Even the "dumbest" "uneducated" hillbilly hick, redneck or poor farmer has all kind of education Sarah can't even imagine.
On the other hand, most of the "highly educated" in this world would be totally lost if handed a couple knives and told to skin a critter, build a fire, and cook supper. They stand by their stalled car, staring at the motor, hoping one of those "uneducated" repukes will stop by and get it started it for them. They call AAA when they have a flat tire. They call a handyman when something minor breaks around the house, and a plumber when they clog the toilet. (You know that handymen and plumbers are awful likely to be "uneducated repukes.")
In fact, if it weren't for the millions of "uneducated repukes" that work and pay taxes, the colleges would go broke, the DUmmies wouldn't have any tax dollars to whine after, and Sarah might have to get enough of a real education to be able to do something practical. :rotf:
Oh, and just on a personal note, my "uneducated repuke" husband has 2 Masters and a Doctorate of Education, and is currently working on a doctorate in religious studies. Somehow, I'll bet that doesn't measure up to Sarah's idea of "educated." :lmao: :lmao: :lmao: :lmao:

Dear Sarah,
Thank you for your concern. I'm quite well educated and even love to read books with big words! You can see the whole panoply of human behavior in literature. It allows me the opportunity to practice pop psychology without bothering with a useless liberal arts PhD. A doctor of literature? Really? Oh, but I did get a scholarship from the feminist National League of American Pen Women for a paper on Faulkner's use of fire as an expression of pathos & passion so I can bullshit with the best of them. Besides, if I got too much education I probably wouldn't remember to pretend to be suitably vapid when I'm around liberals. Lord knows, the slightest disturbance of your stereotypes is like a disturbance in the force...it can pretty much screw up your whole universe and your heads would explode. And conservatives would be left to clean up your mess...again! However, I think literature can teach us a lot about the liberal mind. Ironic, since most authors are liberal bordering on Marxist (they can afford to be), but then the best literature is rife with unintended outcomes.
Anyway, I was rereading Absalom, Absalom last night and I got to thinking how representative the character of Wash Jones is to the average liberal. Wash is a squatter and a lazy one to boot, living off the largess of Colonel Sutpen. The colonel is a mean old coot, but like your average rich Democrat politician tolerates Wash because he worships at his feet and all he has to do is throw Wash an occasional bone. Not enough to thrive, of course. But just enough to easily led to believe his overlord has his best interest at heart. So when the dirty old man starts messing with his 16 year old granddaughter, Wash simply looks the other way. Wash's small comfort become more important than his own flesh and blood. Kinda like thinking it's okay to saddle your children and grandchildren with massive debt because you believe you're entitled to things you should get on your own through hard work. And when you're dependent on someone else, you adopt whatever twisted moral code they make you live by. Of course, just like DUmmies tell themselves they're still important, Wash pretends he's been a part of the exciting life Colonel Sutpen has lived. As the pathetic DUm...uh...Wash tells himself, "Maybe I am not as big as he is and maybe I did not do any of the galloping. But at least I was drug along where he went."
So when grandaughter Millie gets pregnant Wash thinks he'll finally make it to the big house. All his worshipping dependence has paid off. Except there's a catch. There always is. Sutpen wants a son and Millie gives birth to a daughter. Well, like all dependent white trash who've outlived their usefulness, the colonel brushes her aside. He says it's too bad she wasn't a mare because he could at least give her a decent stable in the barn. Wash comes unglued, kills the Colonel, his granddaughter and her baby. But before he kills Colonel Sutpen he tells him, "You know I never. You know I never expected or asked or wanted nothing from any living man but what I expected from you. And I never asked that. I didn't think hit would need: I just said to myself I don't need to." Except he did. He always had his hand out. Didn't even know how to take care of himself anymore. Sort of reminds me of voting against your own interest. When you vote for someone to give you things you neither earned nor worked for you're also voting for them to control your life. What they give they can take away or put such a high price on that it's nothing more than crumbs. Frankly, I'd just as soon not give them the chance to knock up my granddaughter.
But I will try harder to be a brainiac like you, Sarah. Because evidently poor and middle class democrats are smarter than poor and middle class conservatives. I think it has to do with the fact that I mostly grew up with my mother & stepfather in an upper middle class neighborhood full of democrats who, despite their cushy surroundings thought they were entitled to more. My stepfather actually says, "vote for the guy who promises to give you the most stuff". It never mattered whether the "stuff" was actually given, just that someone promised. Well, no one can deliver such lofty handouts. Conservatives just aren't willing to let themselves be fooled by pretty words. Maybe that's one of the things that makes you smarter. Being better educated and all it's easier for you to believe in all those big pretty words. I think as I gained more common sense as I got older, I lost some of that special nuance gene you get from all that book larnin'.
Well, that's about all the intellectualizing my poor brain can stand so I'm heading back to my nice little world of name calling and "us versus them" Sarah, you useless Marxist, elitist bitch!

On that whole education thang:
http://ironshrink.com/2010/04/are-liberals-more-intelligent-than-conservatives-another-broken-study-says-it-is-so/
Seems libs can ONLY thrive after conservative Capitalists build the system for which they can thrive. In a feudal system, or anything similar, they'd starve to death. When it's dog eat dog, there's just not many people willing to barter their goods for your sociology skillz. Conservatives and libertarians tend to pursue degrees in hard sciences like medicine, engineering, business, etc. Liberals prefer the "soft" sciences that don't mean shit unless things are going extremely well and people are so rich and gluttonous that they'd throw their money at everything, AA studies, "womyn" studies, Sociology, etc. How many people in Cuba, Venezuela, the former USSR, or China do you think has degrees in shit like that? This is why they claim they're so much "intelligenter", because they can't make it with a bachelor's in shit like that so they continue wasting money, racking up tens of thousands of dollars in loans to reach that master's or PhD level so you'll finally come to appreciate how supersmart they are....all a futile attempt at improving their self-worth. These are your prototypical "look at me! look at me!" participation trophy kids.
....and, now read this with me lurkers, if the shit in this nation ever reboots like you fools claim you want, I.e. our society collapses, you're the Chihuahuas in the pack of Pitbulls. Have fun trying to survive with nothing to barter but studies in "womyn".

Every day I marvel at how poor and middle class Republicans vote against their self-interests
To start... I thought Republicans were all rich money hoarding people who ran billion dollar corporations. There not? Oh... :banghead:
I've read the studies showing that Republicans are people who are led by fears, who love authority, who don't feel comfortable unless there is an enemy. However, there's another school of thought about why people whose very life is precariously balancing on a high wire choose to vote for those who persistently destroy American life for the poor and middle class, and ensure they never get out of the hole. It is this: that poor and middle class Republicans don't like being made to feel stupid.
I would love to see some of these "studies." I am sure some lefty Professor at some lefty school had nothing to do with them. We love authority? Hmmm, seems to me we want less government and authority. You want bigger government which automatically means more authority. Again... :banghead:
I was part of a Bi-partisan forum for many years until it got overran by liberal fascists and finally closed down because it sucked so bad. At this forum, anytime I would present real statistics from sources like the IRS, Census Bureau, Department of Education, etc... Everytime I would do this the conversation would shut down. I have never felt less intelligent than a Democrat. I am not super educated, but I gauran****ingtee I more intelligent than most.
As has been pointed out DUmmie. education and intelligence are two different things. An education in Womens Studies doesn't tell me or anyone else you have a bit of intelligence.
WHY NOT HERE? Why must intelligence be hidden and relegated to a lower level? Why do poor and middle class Republicans feel that lack of education is desirable?
We don't, you are making shit up because you have nothing better to do. And you have said the word poor so many times if you were a conservative they would call you a racist.

It's such a pleasure to know they're not allowed on DU, at least not for long. If they join DU, they have to remain silent. The moment they subscribe and spew their venom, they get punted back to their hellhole where they can fester their little black hearts out.

She damned well better know.
She was named a Top DUmmie of 2011, and word gets around.
I'll bet she's known about us for a very long time.
She's lying, just like she lied when she said she'd move out of the United States if George Bush were re-elected in 2004. She's still here. What a sack of shit.

It upsets the Sarah primitive that conservatives are more intelligent than liberals. The only way to deny that being the case is the claim of conservatives voting against their own interests, which is a very, very weak argument. Once the libs get to that level, you know they're clinging by their fingertips.

Well, you're aware that when someone "bookmarks" a site, the owner of the site knows it's been bookmarked.

Translation, Thank you Skinner for not making us have to back our assetions with logical debate. She wouldn't last a day here.
I don't think she would qualify as a whore. Someone would have to be willing to pay for that.

Actually Sarah, it doesn't matter weather or not we spew venom or not. You act like we are the hateful ones, you really need to just sit back and take a look at DU3 one day. If you don't see all the hateful post's there, then your sight is so skewed there isn't anything anybody can say that you would even consider. Anyway, what I was saying is if we even tried to have decent debate at DU we would be banned, I have seen long time DUmmies get posts deleted and or banned just because they disagreed with the majority.
I am the "middle Class" and actually low middle class at that. I can tell you one thing, I won't be very long. A little back story: My parents started dirt poor, and we were poor my whole life. It wasn't until after I left home that my mother found a very successful career. I would say she makes between $200,000-$275,000 a year. Do you know how much she paid in taxes last year? ~$89,000... And I think I am off a few thousand, its probably in the ninety's. So over a third of her income went to the government. You could probably care less... Do you know how many people she employees? About 5, WOW!!!! A rich repug does create jobs???? What? Say it ain't so.
I could go on and on and on.
My uncle grew up with an outhouse in his backyard in a poor part of MS. He now owns several 5 star hotels. Do you know how many people he employees? ~500... OMG!!! Another rich repug creating jobs. Do you know how he started? Washing dishes in a Holiday Inn. I don't even want to know how many 100's of thousands he has paid in taxes.
I say all this to say, we... the poor, middle, and upper middle vote for what is best for us. Because when I finally get this promotion I don't want to pay nearly %35 in taxes. Because when my mother and father finally do die, which is probably ~50 years from now, I shouldn't have to give 50% of that to a government that is so thick in bureaucracy it cost $4.00 for every $1.00 they redistribute of our taxes my mother and father worked their butt off for what they have and already paid the government a few times over. Same with my uncle and his family, and me and my kids when I die.
We vote for what is best for us, we want less government, less taxes, more work, more personal responsibility, we love our guns, we love our religion and yours, for that matter, whatever it may be. We love Freedom.
Edit: And guess what? My Parents and Uncle in the above story give thousands upon thousands to the needy. My parents have taken in homeless families since I was a kid, even when we were poor. My mother cooks for the elderly and sick a couple times a month. Also my father travels around the world on his dime and donations doing charity work. I guarantee you my parents have done more with their money for the needy, homeless, sick, and elderly than the government has done with the 100's of thousands the government has taken from them through taxes.
Sarah, please get a clue.

True, one has to adapt.
I know of one mole who does a pretty good job of egging stupid Sarah on, so she makes stupid comments that bring her to the attention of the DUmpster.
We're puppet masters.

My statistics professor quoted on the day we walked into her class, "There are three types of lies, little white lies, damn lies, and statistics."
Statistics are meaningless to an individual. A man will either decide he needs to be out of bed at 4:30 or 5:00 AM to look for whatever job is available or go to work, or he could role out of bed at 9:30, crack open a beer, and not worry about looking for work. Some numbers, massaged or otherwise determined by someone else are of no meaning to him.
Family statistics indicate that I may have a heart attack next year. If you ignore the fact that unlike my father, two uncles, and grandfathers, I try to eat healthy, get regular cardiovascular excercise, don't drink heavily, and don't smoke more than once in a blue moon.

Clemens wrote about that before your professor was even born. "There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies, and statistics"

She said it was a quote, I don't recall if she cited the original author or not, that was too many moons ago.

Why must intelligence be hidden and relegated to a lower level? Why do poor and middle class Republicans feel that lack of education is desirable?
As has already been mentioned, a college degree and "educated" are not the same thing, our other objection to "education" has to do with those that claim to have it, and those that claim to educate. So many of them sound like this:
poor and middle class Republicans vote against their self-interests...
Republicans are people who are led by fears, who love authority, who don't feel comfortable unless there is an enemy...
They don't bother people with statistics, with numbers, and they engage in a good amount of name-calling...
I seem to have a fan base of Repigs...
The poor little rats are angry that I call them what they are...who is it that name-calls, Sarah? :rotf:
I'd say, 'stupid men' (and women)...
the destruction by right wingers of the public school system...The school system that is dominated by a left-wing NEA, left-wing teachers and left-wing philosophies...and yet you believe the right wing has damaged education? When the right wing ran schools, at least the graduates could read and write!!
Repukes block the black vote...
feeble-minded Republicans...
"Freedom from federal government" is a propaganda tactic, and not based on reality...
their deeds and words reflect hatred, authoritarian attitudes, a love of punishing, a cruel streak...They're the biggest hypocrites.
They adore censorship.
the biggest ideals of the GOP are based on racism... the moment these people see dark-skinned kids, they see them as 'others.'
They have no sense, don't base these on education or facts, and are infantile in their view of life...
Bible-banging, envangelical perverts...
With your own words, Sarah. This is why conservatives don't view those that consider themselves "educated" with favor. First, they aren't "educated," they just may have been in college longer, this doesn't guarantee any kind of "education." Second, they generally have no clue what they are talking about, and aren't smart enough to understand when it's explained. And third, they are convinced that only their values are correct, only their beliefs are correct, only their education is correct, only their statistics are correct...and yet try to carry the "tolerant" label. In fact, we tolerate your prejudice, racism, elitism, judgemental attitudes and ignorance every day. We don't agree with you, but we tolerate you.

4. And you will continue to "marvel"
for as long as you wrongly believe it is YOU who knows what is in THEIR best interest.
It's not about your opinions on education, it's about their views on individual rights and freedoms. Which so happens to also be why the far-left hates us moderate Dems.
Good try, tim, but doomed to failure in the echo-chamber of the left. Don't you already know that most of your companions on the left are blind and deaf to any but their own viewpoint?

Both from Sarah.
Sarah, the fact that you love and buy every statistic fed to you shows just how much of a stupid sheep you are. A statistic can be molded and crafted into anything at all its creator wants it to be. The raw data can be suspect, the timeframe can be skewed to suit any purpose, the difference between correlation and causation can be dismissed.
Questioning all this stuff is known as the much-vaunted Critical Thinking Skills.
-
There's no such thing as a "moderate" Dem on DU. They'd have been called freepers and tombstoned.

Example Sarah:
Al Gore did this with the Global warming thing. He took 100 years of weather, even though the data was incorrect because of advances it technology and tracking, and skewed it to look like we were warming in an upward motion and had been for a long time. Last time I checked the earth has been around for several thousand years. So by just using 100 years of data, half correct or not, he left out many global warming and cooling events over the earths history. Of course any one smarter than a 10 year old can read history that shows the earth has warmed and cooled many times and that the human impact on these events was zero to none.
Gores Statistics=WRONG!
-
I'd say about 4.5 billion years.
-
Also...
I actually fact check many "statistics" that are posted by the right.
Example:
Someone posted this yesterday on facebook:
Sure enough I did a little fact checking. It's half true. It all depends on what date you start at. The day Obama took office or the day he signed the first budget. See Sarah statistics can be skewed very easy. I for one check all of them, left wing and right wing. So again Sarah.
GET A CLUE!

Is that determination from the bit about creating everything in 6 days and resting on the 7th? If so, how do you marry that up with the notion that there is no concept of time in Heaven?

And how do you marry that up with the dinosaur fossil record?
Threadjack; we should probably continue this elsewhere, if desired.

Sarah, you come crawling here to America to vomit what you think you see and know. You will grow old and ugly, never knowing happiness. I imagine part of your hatefulness is due to being a used cheap piece of ass and being stuck in bad financial situations. :lmao: I calls them like I sees them too.
Hey girl. :mental:

You know the one thing they never do when discussing this whole "voting against their own interests" topic is discuss just what those interests are. They assume they know better than everyone else what we should want/have/need. I'm perfectly happy with my life. So what if we have to struggle to pay the bills once in a while? People struggle with many things during their lives. But the money problems are the only ones that seem to matter to you.
Am I supposed to want single payer health care? That gives me ONE choice. No options in what I want coverage for, no choice in how much I want my premiums to be or my co-pay or anything else. If everyone is forced on government health care the "rich" will still be able to get whatever kind of treatment they want. But I will actually lose a choice if the government takes over. And the government will set a cap on how much a doctor makes based on whatever criteria they decide. Many good ones will leave the profession. How is that in my best interest? Why isn't my best interest to pass a law allowing everyone to buy insurance across state lines? That would introduce true competition (both for premium costs and coverage options) and insurance companies would have to earn my business whereas an impersonal government could care less.
Am I supposed to want everyone to belong to a union? Unions artificially set the "price" of an employee. It doesn't matter whether one is lazy and another works their ass off, both make the same amount. When they're unhappy they strike (pretty much an adult temper tantrum) for more, more, more. It doesn't matter whether the economy can support their wages and it's not tied to how well they do their job (or if they do it) but how much they think they should get. Obviously this makes the cost of their goods go up. How is that in my best interest?
I simply don't see how losing choices, which is essentially losing more of my freedom is in my best interest and not one of you DUmmies are capable of adequately explaining to me why your way is better. You're all quite good at mocking, name calling, insulting (or worse) people who don't think exactly like you. If I wanted to be in lockstep with everyone else I'd move to Cuba or Venezuela.
Cindie

Been reading Liberal Fascism: The Secret History of the American Left, From Mussolini to the Politics of Meaning for the past few days. A ton of history I didn't know and a lot of crap they want to ran from. These idiots have been trying to push this crap since the 1800's.
