Iran would be stupid not to develop an atomic weapon
It appears to be an insurance policy against military invasion from the warmongering American empire

1. Or a way to threaten its neighbors. Something it has a long history of doing.
Bad DUmmy.

3. When was the last time Iran attacked one of its neighbors?
Pretty sure it's been awhile.

9. Iran has used proxies to wage war for decades now.
Hezbollah is a wholly-owned Iranian funded subsidiary.
Except when they kill people it's 'Freedom Fighting', so it's ok.

16. So has the United States
The US has waged proxy wars for decades - and launched direct military attacks on other nations, often without provocation

19. I thought we were talking about Iran.
Iran has been fighting a proxy war against Israel for thirty years now.
Hugabear (7,805 posts) Profile Journal Send DU Mail Ignore
22. And Israel has been waging a real war against Palestinians for even longer
You still can't provide an example of Iran using its military to attack or invade another nation in recent history.

6. I do feel America and Israel to blame for Iran's alleged desire to pursue nuclear weapons
America, Israel and NATO have been engaged in war after war for decades now, however, no country with nuclear capability was attacked during this time span. A glaring example of this is North Korea which is believed to have several nuclear weapons. They are part of the "axis of evil", yet they were left alone.
The US has Iran completely surrounded with bases from Afghanistan to Turkey, Bahrain and the Gulf. Iran feels threatened for good reason. Iran does not have he US surrounded with bases. Also, Iran is a relatively peaceful nation compared to the US as they have not been engaged in war after war for decades. Remember, it was Iraq that attacked them in the 1980's.
Iran feels the need to defend itself because of America's belligerent tendencies.

10. Iran's reasons for wanting the bomb are similar to those of other nations
It expands options. As a deterrent it's useful, but it's also useful as a means of leverage against non-nuclear powers. The logic isn't hard to understand.
What's harder to understand for me is seeing this type of thing cheered on the left. Traditionally the left has been against nuclear proliferation and nuclear weapons in general. One would think a lot of people would be particularly averse to a theocratic regime getting one. But there you have it, I guess. Things change.
Never use the word logic at the DUmp.

13. Last time I checked it wasn't a theocratic regime that actually used nukes..
...on other people
See what I mean?

24. Unfortunately we seem to be living in bizarro world
The US now has a record of "preemptive strikes" against countries it feels might be a threat (to profits).
Having nuclear weapons prevents the US from invading simply because you can nuke your own soil during an invasion without any serious repercussions from the international community.
All the talking heads still present nuclear weapons as strictly an offensive tool. With the overwhelming power of the US conventional force these have now become defensive weapons.
Bizarro.
Bizarro is the DUmp making up its own realties.

4. That's sort of how I feel about it. Iraq was the stabilizing factor in that region.
The shrub sure ****ed up THAT one. We've lived with Russia/USSR having nukes for almost as long as we've had them ourselves. Somebody's going to make a mistake one day (think "Dr. Strangelove") and it could be any of the nuclear powers. I'm more worried about an accidental launch than someone "pushing the button" - even when Republicans are in control.
Just no words.

12. We would be stupid to not stop them.
Bush allowed North Korea to get them.
I hope another country does not go nuclear under President Obama, or ever.
A lie is a lie,Bubba and Jimmuh sold us out to them with a useless treaty of pretty please and then turn their backs.

21. But..but...we would never actually use our nuclear weapons on innocent people...oh, wait.
Impeach FDR and Truman...call Congress right fvcking NOW!!!!!!
Newsflash idiots,it is bad idea for a country run by radicals that believes all non muzzies should be killed and has no problem with suicide bombers to achieve that to have a nuclear weapon.
It really is that simple.

Oh come on! You're being too tough on Bubba, he sent Madam Albright there with a basketball and secured the peace!
The whole deal fell apart when Dubya's administration refused to send Krazy Kim an airpump and the basketball went flat.

True MrsSmith, I wonder how they got this way ???? Where do people learn history that are born after the fact.???
Who is in charge of education of history in the schools or on documentarys on TV ?
How many people learned about the history of WW2 from watching Hogans Hero's. SAY, the POW camps were a laugh a minute, not as bad as the survivors tell. This program came on after those of us kids that watched Victory At Sea for years and no one I knew in my generation would allow that Hogans Hero's program to be watched in their homes. It is and was a disgrace to our men and woman that died due to starvation and horror.
How something so evil could have been turned into a comedy program escapes me. It is a wonder Hollywood did not come out with a back slapping comedy on the Bataan Death March.
Total disgust for the Publishers of history books that are slanted to different areas of the country, every 8 -10 years or so the books are rewritten by those that follow the Administration of the time.
Do the experts even know the facts of history, or are they writing what is politically correct at that time????
Who can blame those taught to be liberal in everyday life.???? A hell of a problem here, do you know or ever met a Conservative Lawyer ????? How many College Professors are Conservative ???? Highschool teachers or early grades that teach what they are told to teach.
The general population sends their children to public schools, what they get is a comedy show like Archie Bunker, a Conservative with a liberal daughter and a meat head for a husband. It was funny as at the time kids were coming home with strange ideas that confused their parents.
Conservatives uneducated in a liberal world are a dieing breed, we do have the Conservative religious schools, we have home schooling, but the parents must follow State guide lines. Those that are liberal.
Parents that help their kids with home work and find a history lesson is the opposite of what they remember are out of luck. If their child writes a paper challenging the facts, they fail the class. Must conform to the teaching of the day, ignore grandpa or any other source that contradicts the teaching.
Liberals today are the people that were trained to be such, a conform or die people. Our churches are of little help, they also have become so liberal they now speak out of both sides of their mouth and hope the money rolls in.
-
I disagree with Vesta...a liberal public school has been a great reinforcement for my conservative son. He contradicts some of his teachers and what they are teaching sometimes. When they have to admit they're wrong and he is right, that just makes some of the other kids question what they're being taught.
Example: First week of US History this semester, the teacher asked if anyone knew what the "Emancipation Proclamation" did. Black kid piped up that it freed all the slaves...teacher agreed. Son piped up that she should read it more carefully because it didn't free a single slave. You know how that lead balloon went over. So she asks him why he thought Lincoln issued it and he stated that he thought it was a moral booster for the union army and to gain support for the union cause.
He's gonna flunk sure as hell...... :lmao:

Let them develop a weapon. Then, they get to play in the big boys club. They will have to learn zero sum thinking. While it may be neat to have a 100KT package sitting in a bunker some where, a delivery system is a whole different story. They also will have to know that you build them not to use them.
If the idiots do decide to use them, it will be an exciting few minutes, after which Iran will become a nuclear sponge. I guess the real loss would be that we would be unable to put monitoring devices on the ground to see if the computer sims of projected yield is actually correct.

What makes you think this is beyond Mossad's capability? I mean, if they can turn nuclear scientists into flaming shish Kabobs for allah, pretty much at will, they pretty much have to have that whole hole of a country wired like a pinball machine. Ahmadinnahjacket probably doesn't get to **** his goat without the Israelis knowing just how unsatisfied the goat is with his teeny tiny size and lackluster performance.
