My recently laid-off best friend call me this evening
saying "There's NO jobs out there... I check every day, Craigslist, the paper, the EDD..."
All I could do was echo "I know... I knoooow... I KNOW!"
...and not just in our little mountainous neck of the woods, but even looking in larger nearby cities is depressing. And then we have to figure in that with a bigger market, there's more competition.
I have not had a 40 hr week job since 2007, and have been bouncing between PT gigs for the past three years.
She just got laid off from a high paying local govt job, where she had been hired directly out of community college. she has no BA, but was making close to $25/hr... and now the jobs she isn't even qualified for want a BA and start at $10...
yep, I told her, that's what it is out there...
Been squeaking by most of my adult life, but yes the past two years are harder than ever. The holidays always demonstrate to me how little 'disposable' income I have, but the day to day scraping for gas or whatnot has become the norm.
I love my friend, but I hate to be the bearer of bad news, because it ain't gettin' any better out there...no matter WHAT the statistics say... I honestly don't know what the answer is, either... Today I paid part of my rent, and have till the 15th to come up with the balance. I have backup because I have family nearby who would help, but it feels lower than low to scrape like this ALL.THE.TIME.
I think I upset my friend by telling her to brace herself for foodstamps...

Local government job where she made $25/hour without a degree. Yeah that sounds about right.

Notice a pattern here DUmmie?
2007 - Bush was still President. The past three years? All Obama, honey.

But, Bush screwed things up so bad that not even a sooper genius like 0bama could fix it in 3 short years. :-)

OWS' need to connect...and how?
I am a huge proponent of the Movement, believe me. It amazes me how many people are still holding the OWS'ers in contempt, Maybe I am naieve, but I thought this was about helping ALL of us?
Whether it is stratification in the workforce or society or what, there are more people than we know who are really thinking it is all a waste of time. The MSM has been hard at work making it more about the 'inconvenience' to the others who are just trying to live their lives.
Just tonight, went to the corner store for a pint, the guy there is moving to Portland...
I excitedly said, "Awesome! Occupy Portland rocks... those people are great." (because I have been watching the livestreams and the way they are working together, and respecting the process, and also because there are a few DU'ers here that are from there, and I adore them)
he said: with a cynical laugh... "THOSE people need to just go away...my girlfriend lives up there and she is warning me that they shut things down, they screw things up in traffic...they are a pain in the ass... I understand what they mean to do man, but they are just screwing it up for people who HAVE jobs because they don't WANT to work."
WTF!?
I was shocked and tried to be calm in defending the movement but let it go without knowing what to say next. I tried to say that we are changing the world so tu will cause inconvenience...he said peaceful protest is great...but it doesn't do anything but make it worse for the rest of us...blahblahblah
Are you guys hearing these comments from others? What do we say to remind folks we are ALL corporate slaves, whether we are in dire straights or not THIS month...next month it could be you...and it needs to CHANGE
How do we get the rest of our 99% to realize they are not as good off as they think they are?
...*sigh* late nights rants...let's see if you guys get what i mean... lol

This one's been on welfare since the beginning of time yet has money for a pint. :whatever:
Reads like she downed the pint before posting.

Yeah, we be so stoopid that we don't realize how miserable we are. :mental:
Thank God for the sooper geniuses of DU pointing out how we have no idea what our lives are like and what is in our best interests. :whatever:

DUmmie flashlight ain't as bright as he thinks he is.
That post could be a prime example of the effects of long term drug usage, except DUmmies are born stupid, then their intelligence goes downhill from there. :lmao:

Actually, things are going pretty damned well for me, all is proceeding according to plan.
O-)

Well, I really don't have a plan but I'm doing better than the DUmmies. :-)
Eat your heart out DUmmies, I'm in the gray area between the poor 99% and the evil rich 1%.

Can someone explain to me how we are all corporate slaves and not government slaves?
Because I see it as government slaves and the slavery has gone up ten fold since the beginning of 2009.
-
Corporate slaves. ::) You can always vote with your feet. If you're a government slave, however, you can't.
Good for that dude that she quoted. Yes, flashlight, the rest of us feel the same way he does.
I have a slip of paper I keep in my desk, to jot quick notes on during the year, with an eye toward DOTY. One notation says, "FirstLight: Welfare queen." Put the pint down, leech.

I have a Bachelor's. The job I'm in RECOMMENDS at least an Associate's, or...wait for it DUmmies...equivalent related experience!!!!
Oh, and it pays a lot better than navel gazing or ghey pron theater stall attendant.
Although I will say it must be nice to show up to a job for 25 years, retire before 50, pull a six-figure retirement, and then go back into ANOTHER state job, as a gent up here did not too long ago.
-
as a gent up here did not too long ago.
We have LOTS of gents who do that. Most typical is a state trooper, who will retire, then go to some sleepy burg somewhere and be their one-and-only cop for awhile. Very cushy. Double retirement.

In Kalifornia if a person gets a state, county, or city job they instantly become a millionaire. How you ask? The average government employee gets $65k/year in retirement pay plus free health care. Retire at 56 and you get over a million dollars (well over) in your retirement. Plus no FICA or medicare taxes taken out during your working time.
-
Helll, the Governor is doing it. :whatever:
I'm pretty sure Jerry Brown is still collecting on his pension from the last time he was in office, in addition to his current salary.

Oh, we realize we aren't as WELL off as we SHOULD be, not since the Marxist Teleprompter in Chief was elected. We just have different solutions because your methods haven't ever worked anywhere they've ever been tried. Exhibit A: Greece!
