Title: poll: which style?
Post by: franksolich on January 01, 2012, 01:55:57 PM
Market research, for improving the Top Ten DUmmies of 2012 twelve months hence.

Forget the winning primitive, and try to remember the written award.

I wrote ten different "styles" of awards, to see which one worked best.

Of the ten awards, which one does one think was the best-written?

Remember, forget the winning primitive, and think of the written award instead.

Numbers in parentheses are "views" thus far, but not accurate.  However, it's got to be disheartening for #01 nadin that #03 my fellow Nebraskan has been stealing her thunder, and I'm sure #09 cali's disappointed that her award's the least-read.

Thanks.

The #3 DUmmy write-up made me laugh out loud while reading it.  It was definitely my favorite.

OKay, got that one: three parts; background and commentary, then quotes in chronological order, and then real life experience.

I see the total views a little differently.

Everyone has around 400 views, except the Weeper and nadin around 700.

I think both of those pitiful lunatics have checked their own respective threads two or three hundred times in the past couple of days.

I prefer the #1 style.  By the end of the year, most of us are tiresomely familiar with the nominees and winners.  I prefer the more personal touch shown in awarding deserving DUmmies their due.  A final send-off with a hearty "go **** yourself" always brings a tear to my eye and makes my breast swell with pride.

Okay, that was the "background" of the primitive + "explanation" of why the primitive is + some unrelated but still pertinent anecdote that describes the primitive; no quotes, no links.

Agreed, Chris, except for the "breast swell with pride."  That makes two for the #1 style.

That was a jest. :-)

Making me wonder if the board was acting up again . . .

I like the 'off the cuff' style writeup that Nads had received - Though it is nice to have a listing of background threads, any of us unfamiliar with the poster's work can hit up the forum's built-in search function easily enough.

I probably shouldn't reveal this, but all of them are off-the-cuff, first and only drafts, written in about forty-five minutes or an hour each.  (This will probably explain why I'm burned out on the primitives by New Year's Eve, just really burned out, wiped out, drained.)

Formerly, the awards were written with just a couple of paragraphs describing the individual primitive, and then a long list of threads.  That's the way it was always done, but I never liked doing that.

Last year, I experimented some, with the #02 top primitive of 2010, the generalissimo dude, writing several paragraphs of commentary, and a much shorter list of links.  I always thought that was the best one I wrote for that year, 2010, although I got scant or no gratitude from the generalissimo primitive for it.

The award for the top primitive of 2010, the Die alte Sau, was one that was truly written right off-the-cuff, in utter haste.  I'd been out helping the neighbor bring in cattle in a raging blizzard, and when I returned home, it was very late on New Year's Eve--and the award had to get out really soon, like within minutes--I was cold, wet, and damp, and so just on the spot punched out a "stream-of-consciousness" thing.

I recall that chris_ liked it, but was never sure if anybody else did.

For 2012, I'm leaning towards (a) more commentary, (b) fewer quotes and links, but I'm not sure that's what the People want.  True, I have 49 weeks yet to worry about it, but it's never too soon to refine.

I think that's the way to go, Frank.

I much prefer any style that includes the maximum number of links to DUmp threads.

It makes the DUmping Ground an excellent reference when you want find an old, vaguely remembererd DUmp thread.

That's a very good point.

Which brings up a further issue.

To include (a) a lot of personal commentary and (b) lots of links would make the awards some, uh, rather long reading.  It wouldn't impose any burden on me, but there's that question: how long is too long?

<<doesn't want to turn off readers.

Would it be too much of a PIA to archive threads into folders with the misfit's name on it?

Considering the size of the DUmpster now, probably.

There's one primitive whose threads have been collected and put into the Sandhills forum here, but he wasn't a prolific primitive.

However, another site not connected with the DUmpster that does keep files has been recently re-started, in time for the 2012 elections.

Already done, in the DUmmy Dossier Database (restricted access).

I also use the previous years' Top DUmmy threads, which include each DUmbass's name in the title.

Dang it Frank, you didn't tell me I was going to be tested on it. ...and just like my school daze, I just read it, laughed and moved on.

No, I'm not going to ask for a 'do-over'. Having to reread them indepth would take some of the giggle out....just go ahead and give me an F- grade. :-)

And as for me, any style "YOU" choose will suit me just fine.
