Van Hollen: Republican Drug Tests For Unemployment Insurance Are ‘Insulting’
Rep. Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) rebuked House Republicans yesterday for suggesting the government require drug tests of individuals seeking unemployment insurance, calling such proposals “insulting†and a “red herring†in the unemployment crisis:
VAN HOLLEN: I think the drug testing thing is a red herring. The reality is that people are not out of work because they have substance abuse problems, people are out of work because there are four people looking for every job that’s available in America.
We’re willing to look at reforms, but the Republican rhetoric has been insulting to a whole lot of working Americans who lost their jobs through no fault of their own… I have to say, this Republican effort to kind of blame people who lost jobs through no fault of their own shows a total insensitivity to the stories that we’re hearing from districts around the country. Frankly I think the American people are hearing that tone and they’re not very appreciative, because they know that everybody, but for the grace of God, could also be in that position.

VAN HOLLEN: I think the drug testing thing is a red herring. The reality is that people are not out of work because they have substance abuse problems, people are out of work because there are four people looking for every job that’s available in America.
There's actually pretty good reason to think that it has a lot more to do with the fact that they can make as much or more by staying on unemployment for nearly two years, with the value of 24/7 free time thrown in to work off the books or just relax, than taking a lesser-paying, lower-status, or out-of-field job instead.

I think it's a great idea. If you have 4 people looking at every available job in America then you knock out any druggies from that pool. Sounds like motivation to stay/get off drugs.

It should be noted that out of the 4 unemployed job seekers, 1 can't pass a piss test.
Herr Van Hollen is only protecting the 25%.

Let's compromise and only drug test them after the standard 26 weeks of UE. The additional UE to 99 weeks is all borrowed money from the federal government borrowing money. I mean the donks are all about compromise. If you can't get a job after 26 weeks it just might be due to drug use. Sounds reasonable to me.
I was talking to a former business partner and he tells me that his UE bill is skyrocketing. Now this may only be a kalifornia thing but he has fewer employees that work fewer hours and his monthly bill went up 35%. The reason is the state has to start paying back the feds for the extended payments that the federal government forced on the states for the last three years. Sorry, DUmbasses that UE extension has to be paid for somehow. He also told me that self employed people with no employees and no UE insurance are getting UE bills now. That's going to really make small business start hiring again...or it just might make them throw in the towel.
