Romney Plan to Keep Tax Return Private Breaks With Past
Saturday, 24 Dec 2011 07:52 AM
Mitt Romney, a multimillionaire who is by far the wealthiest of the Republican presidential candidates, said he has no plans to release his income tax returns if he wins his party’s nomination, setting himself apart from past nominees in both parties who have routinely done so.
Romney, whose most recent disclosure in August estimated his personal wealth at as much as $250 million, said Dec. 22 he had already released extensive financial information and had no “current plans†to make his tax returns public.
If the former Massachusetts governor wins the nomination and sticks to his plan, he would be one of the only presidential nominees in the last three decades to withhold his income tax return. While income tax information is private and there is no legal obligation to disclose it, presidents and nominees for the office have regularly done so since the 1970s.
“We follow the tax laws, and if there’s an opportunity to save taxes, we -- like everybody else in this country -- will follow that opportunity,†Romney told reporters in Lancaster, New Hampshire, according to a partial transcript of his remarks provided by his campaign.
“Down the road, we’ll see what happens if I’m the nominee,†he added, saying that while he had no “immediate plans†to release tax returns, “that may change in the future.â€
The day before, he had been more definitive in an interview with MSNBC’s Chuck Todd, saying “I doubt it,†when asked about releasing his tax return, and adding, according to a transcript: “I don’t intend to release the tax returns.â€
Hmmmm. Is this a Christmas present for us?

Nice to see he's as open and transparent as 0bama. Here's a hint Mitt, if you don't publish tax records, election finance reports, college grades, etc. 0bama gets to dodge that lack of transparency completely.

The media will spike any negative stories until he's the nominee. They with no hope to replace him, the character assassination will begin.

Funny how most of the negative stories about Romney come from the right, but are ignored by the MSM for now. Yet the MSM is all to willing to knock down the conservatives running against Romney. It almost makes me think that the MSM wants Romney to be the GOP candidate.

Just like they wanted Comrade McLame to be the Candy-date in 2008.

Exactly, the MSM picks a losing candidate for the opposing side.

I KNOW they want him to be the candidate.

Exactly, the MSM picks a losing candidate sacrificial lamb for the opposing side.
FIFY. 6 of one, half-dozen of another, but I thought there was a bit more truth in advertising saying it this way. :cheers1:

I.Do.NOT.Want.Romney
in any manner, fashion or form.
All the money in the world can't erase his weasel waffling on vital issues. I liked Cain, alot, so of course some no good ho's and the media ho's destroyed his character. Now, I'm just crossing my fingers for anyone but Mitt. I do not believe he'd appoint Supreme Court judges any less ****ed up than the choices Zer0 has made. And I think he'd run so far and fast to the left of the political spectrum once in office he'd be trailing his RomneyCare toilet paper behind him.
Sorry to piss of any Mitt fans but the only thing I'll do if he's the nominee is mail in an absentee ballot from my French cruise. Seriously.
Greenbriar better get her ass back in the game, what with Euph and me both going on cruises. :hammer:

I don't care if Romney makes his recorders public or not. Obama didn't make his recorders public.
I think that the GOP nominee will be someone other than Romney.
-
Romney has supported too many liberal causes from socialized meds to global warming to greenie energy. I just do not think this cat can change his spots and have this transformation from left wing ideology to conservatism. Too much of a stretch for me. If he gets elected President, he will put forth policies to improve the economy but on social and foreign policy issues he will be a disaster. We will be in a position like Obummer; anybody except a Democrat after his first term. Can we say Tea Party party here we come.

Who would you like to see as the eventual GOP nominee?
I'll go first. I want to see Mr. Perry as the nominee.

Just not Ron Paul. The rest I would have varying levels of enthusiasm voting for, but Paul would drive me away.

I agree.

Any of them except Romney, Paul or Huntman. Perry would be great. I think he better understands the tremendous growth potential of oil and natural gas exploration better than the rest of the bunch. Millions of high paying jobs could be created in this industry.

I took some political candidate match test awhile back and the website said my best candidate was Michele Bachmann. But I'd be okay with Perry or Gingrich. Not Paul and I don't know enough about Huntsman, although a writeup called him a personal friend of Barry's so he obviously has no character judgement skills. :mental:

Exactly. However, if it did come down to Romney v. Obama, I'd wear a clothespin to the polls . . .
. . . and fill in the blank next to Romney. :banghead:

Did not think of it that way but you are absolutely correct.
