GOP restores ban on needle-exchange funding
 Source: San Francisco Chronicle

It took AIDS activists 21 years to get Congress to restore federal funding for local programs that supply clean needles to drug users. It's taken Republicans a couple of months of hardball negotiations to get the ban reinstated.

Legislation to fund government operations for 2012, which President Obama is about to sign, includes an amendment prohibiting federal spending on needle exchanges in both domestic and international programs. That was the law from 1988 until December 2009, when Obama signed a Democratic-sponsored appropriations bill lifting the restrictions.

... "Reinstating the ban is murderous. It's saying that people who use drugs should contract fatal and expensive diseases and die," said Laura Thomas, San Francisco director of the Drug Policy Alliance and a volunteer in a local needle-exchange program for the last 15 years.

... The legislation was "the product of a tough negotiation," said White House spokesman Adam Abrams. "To reach a compromise, we had to accept certain provisions that we oppose and these are two of them."

1. Harm reduction values human beings,

Meets them where they are & offers options to be one-step safer, healthier. But it's not a policy for people who want to punish, to condemn others, to be mean, to be lacking in compassion.

2. Hey, you cheap bastids!

You think paying for AIDS medications is cheaper than clean hypodermic needles? Even *I* don't believe for a minute that these sociopaths are so stupid that they don't recognize the economics involved. This move is rooted in pure damned meanness and is tantamount to murder, as suggested in the article.

3. What a disgrace this is,

as one who has lost a family member with AIDS this is so offensive on every ****ing level.

I find spending tax dollars to coddle useless drug addicts more offensive.

5. I don't understand the rationale for this

Why does the GOP want to spend more money on health costs?

This is not simply an issue of health - this is about govt. waste by insisting upon stupid policy - and what's the reason for such stupid policy?

What benefit is it to Republicans to increase taxpayer costs across a spectrum of issues?

Are they so freaking stupid, so tied to the idea that the "moral" right wingers want to kill people that they are willing to put that burden upon the American people?

Or are they so blinded by their hatred of anything considered Democratic that they will oppose good legislation simply to be able to score some non-existent political points - even when all Americans are negatively impacted by their stupidity?

I swear that the current crop in Congress looks to be too stupid to breathe.

You half witted cretin, drug use undermines society, comes with an enormous societal cost having to deal with addicts.
Here is a little hint jackass...don`t want to get aids, don`t be sticking needles in your arms.
Pretty simple isn`t it?

Useless pieces of shit.

No, we think that if you are going to take risks with your life then you should also assume the responsibilities for such risks. :hammer:

I guessed that they overlooked the fact that it went through  BJ Billy's entire 8 year term and 3 years for the jug eared Kenyan.

I fail to see the problem.

:banghead: No!  :banghead: No!  :banghead: No!   Personal responsibility is one of them code words that only racist reich-wingers use. Not only should society provide free clean needles but also high quality drugs for free. /DU mode

Would it be that hard to sterilize a needle using alcohol or a lighter?   (I admit I know nothing about hypodermic needles other than getting shots with them.)

Actually I think we ought to give them the needles and the drugs to shoot up. Just make sure that it is 100 percent pure so they OD and die.
They are gonna eventually kill themselves with drugs anyway, so lets just speed it up a little bit.

Problem solved.   :fuelfire: :fuelfire:

Why do they have to be free.  Insulin syringes are available over the counter in most states.  You got enough money from giving bj's in an alley behind burger king to buy a nickle bag you got a couple of bucks to buy some syringes.  Ever notice how drug users can all afford 6 dollar a pack smokes but balk at spending money on clean works?

I personally would give them all a bag of 100% pure heroin and let them take their chances.  Soylent Green.

So giving junkies needles to continue using is somehow or another compassionate, safer, and healthier instead of actually trying to get them off the dope and back into society.

Uh, yeah.....

No, I am of the mind that if you are hellbent on killing yourself with dope, you should be allowed to reap the benefits of your "hobby" without having to burden those of us that actually work and contribute to society.

Maybe you should have been a more positive force in that family member's life instead of allowing them to shoot up with guys who liked to suck dick for drug money.

5. I don't understand the rationale for this

Oh, that's an easy one - we're tired of subsidizing failure and societal rot in the name of "compassion".
