Scrapple? Anyone ever had or made this?
It sounds sort of interesting, and sort of nasty at the same time. Of course, there are many variations -- some contain a lot of interesting, generally not consumed pig parts. Others are more contemporary and contain less controversial ingredients.

Nightmares from childhood.....out here in Nebraska, 1500 miles away from Pennsylvania Dutch country.
My father, although born and raised in northwestern Pennsylvania, himself far away from Pennsylvania Dutch country (but in the same state), doted on scrapple.
Dined on it as often as he could.
It was the sorriest-looking food I've ever seen.

1. THAT one, I'd try. Those flavors work really well together.
I can't see any reason it wouldn't rock.

2. I might try making this at some point.
I think I'd do half a recipe, since it seems to yield a lot.
Worst case scenario, it gets fed to the chickens.
This recipe seems ok, not so sure about the ones that are full of strange pig parts and sound kind of like Haggis.

3. I can't do those...I am always one scary meal away from being a vegetarian again.
That will just leave more for the people who have a more adventurous palate!

I had scrapple once at my ex-laws in northern PA near Gettysburg. Sliced very thin and fried , it wasn't too bad, until I found out what it was.

My Husband and his family love Scrapple, you can get it sometimes here in like a round tube. I tried it, not that crazy about it. Andrew Zimmern from Bizarre Foods on The Travel Channel did a show on a family in Pennsylvania who make the stuff from scrratch, from the killing of the pig to finally eating the stuff. It takes a long time to cook, and it's constant stirring.

One day there was a sale on canned vegetables. I cleaned out a dozen of cans and somehow when I got home found a can of beef brains in milk. Oh good grief, what to do with this interesting food product.
I came home from work to find the 10 year old girl being teased by 12 year old brother to take a challenge. The 15 year old son was watching and laughing his butt off.
The 12 year old had a paper route so he had a $5.00 bill. He was challenging the younger sister to eat the can of of cold beef brains and milk.
Interesting, I just sat down to see how this would turn out. One of those things that parents do not need to interfear with. Hide and watch.
No way would my little girl do this, I would not do it for $150.00 or more.
To all of our amazement the girls eyes glazed over and she when off to another world and ate the whole can.
How had she done this????? She said she just pretended it was ice cream.
We never looked at that frail child the same again, she was to go to become stronger and then the other kids when it came to what she wanted. As an adult now she is still stronger then her siblings, stubborn woman.
Needless to say her brothers never picked on her again, and I became more careful when shopping to insure I brought home nothing of that kind again.
Thank heavens we are all in New England where the chance of buying such is zero today.

I used to do a lot of work up in the north east. We spent a considerable amount of time roaming around PA and I always saw scrapple on the breakfast menu. One day I finally decided to order some ... The waitress noticed my southern accent and asked me if I knew what scrapple was. Nope, I replied. She said well, you know what they make hotdogs and bologna out of? Yup, I said. Well, this is the stuff they won't put in hotdogs and bologna.
I took a pass.
