Title: what does one make of this?
Post by: franksolich on December 20, 2011, 08:23:30 PM
I dunno.

Not knowing the sender, I'm not at all confident it's not a primitive with a malicious intent.

Seems legitimate to me. http://www.firefoxfacts.com/2009/03/23/beginner-guide-to-stylish/

I'd give it a shot.

Not using Firefox, though.

I'm just leery, especially of things from sources unknown to me.

It looks like it's available directly from Mozilla (the Firefox people).  I wouldn't worry about viruses since they probably screen everything before they offer it.

I wouldn't worry about using it if you're already a Firefox user.

As well you should be.  I've had to beat back two similar viruses (as in similar to each other, not to what your anonymous pen pal is offering) in the last two weeks - and I haven't downloaded anything, or altered my browsing habits in the surrounding timeframe.

I use the Adblock plus add-on with Firefox and get the same results.

Well, the deal here is that I don't, personally, have any problems with the advertisements.

They're there, but one can mentally block them out.

And as for helping Skins's vacation fund, remember the old school tie.  Anything for a fellow alum.

I use Adblock for Chrome and don't see any ads either.

I loaded Firefox up with Adblock and a few other things and it crashed so often I stopped using it.  Even after I tried removing all that, it still ran like shit.  I switched to Safari and haven't had many problems with it.  It does have a bad habit of crashing when I first turn my computer on, but waiting until everything is running usually solves that problem.

Safari has a nice feature called Top Sites that shows your 8- or 12-most visited sites, but the bookmark/Favorite management leaves a lot to be desired.

See, here's another thing.

I've had no problems, no problems at all, since TVDOC set up this computer for me little more than a year and a half ago.

If he were to see it today, he'd recognize it all immediately, because it's still set up exactly the way he set it up.

This is the longest time I've ever gone with a crash or some other malfunction.

I could be wrong, but I credit it to the fact that I don't ever "add" anything to it; it seems to me the more working parts something has, the more likely it is something's going to break down.

Also, since I don't--for obvious reasons--do movies or youtubes or whatever on it, I wonder if that's an additional factor for the computer to always be running so well.

That's a good idea.

That is the main complaint with Windows.  Microsoft keeps adding stuff to it.  The people using it keep adding stuff to it.  If you set up a computer and leave it alone with no changes whatsoever, it will work fine 99.99% of the time.  It's when you start adding, moving, and deleting stuff that causes problems.

I liked Firefox/Mozilla when they first came out but they keep changing it and upgrading it and now it crashes me for all the time.

I use Bing on my iPad and that actually works pretty well.  The default browser is Safari.

I tried to use Bing.  I ended up going back to Google because it was so bad.

An unsolicited email? Its a trap.
A name like allahJesus? Its a trap.
Someone you don't know giving a secret way to access DU? Its a trap.

I'm inclined to agree.

The addon in itself might not be malicious but the configuration script you have to use to set it up probably is.

I started having the same problems with Firefox, mostly with the computer freezing up and not wanting to "wake up".

I got tired of having to restart it every time I wanted to use it, so I switched to Chrome.  No problems (so far).   :II:

Agreed.

The only people bitching about the ads are the DUmmies.

Let 'em bitch!

My first thought as well, but I believe the owner of the email address to which it was sent is pretty well known by their mole-hunters, and I assume our man in Havana is sufficiently astute to refrain from having it as a contact address in any of his mole accounts.

Now I'm even more suspicious.
To quote Admiral Ackbar: Its a trap!
A lurker who claims to be conservative, but we have to take his word for it since no one knows him.
Further he chastises those who are rightfully suspicious as paranoid.

The bottom line is this, allahJesus: We don't need a secret way in.

Most of the time, we don't even need a mole to cut and paste the lunacy. I don't need a magic entrance.

Even if this is 100% legit, its presented in such a bizarre manner that I would advise everyone to avoid this like the plague.
