Thwart Salvation Army Bigotry With Three Dollar Bill Protest
One of the things that I love about the Internet is that it helps people, through easy access of information, to build upon the ideas that other people put forward. So, it seems that a group of people over at Live Journal have responded to some articles that we’ve written here about how the Salvation Army engages in discrimination and takes a big chunk of government money from the White House office on religion in return for its political lobbying efforts in favor of the agenda of the Religious Right.
Someone writing under the name Angry Biscuit has expanded on these articles to spawn a protest against the Salvation Army’s discriminatory practices. His protest has taken off across Live Journal, and so has found its way back here to Irregular Times, where I’m happy to pass it on.
Given that the Salvation Army discriminates against gays, atheists, Jews, and even against Christians that don’t belong to a church the Salvation Army approves of, people are placing notes of protest in the nagging red kettles at supermarkets across the country, instead of money. You can see a picture of one of these notes of protest, created in the form of a fake three dollar bill, below:
The protest bill has a rainbow flag on it and reads, When the Salvation Army ends its policy of religious bigotry and discrimination against gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people, then and only then will this be a real dollar bill Stop homophobia, discrimination and hate now. We are all human.

MADem point out to her how DUmb she is for being in such a hurry to C&P a article, that pritchett never bothers to read past the headline.

1. Your link is FIVE YEARS OLD, from back in the BUSH era.
The Salvation Army is a religion with beliefs. Some of their beliefs are just stupid. Pretty much every religion has stupid beliefs, from white horses that fly to Jerusalem to Golden Plates that can only be read in a top hat to a 33 year old unmarried Jewish boy turning water into wine.
I don't think it is helpful to screw with these Salvation Army people, and I'll tell you why. Of all the charities, religious or otherwise, they deliver the most bang for the buck--most of what you give them gets to the needy. And they DO help the needy--the homeless, the drunkards, the hungry--they do reach out and help those people and they really do serve "the least of the brethren."
If you can't bring yourself to support them because of some of their dumb positions, I say don't support them. But there's really no need to **** with them, either. It's not going to change their minds, they have their own POV and they aren't going to change. All you're doing is taking some of the energy that they use to help the homeless or feed the hungry and sapping it away with notes that haven't changed their mind in five long years.
Don't put any cash in the kettle if you don't like them. That's probably the best way to register your dislike for their religious beliefs.
Just so there's no question, here's their website, they make their beliefs very clear on it: http://www.salvationarmyusa.org/usn/www_usn_2.nsf/0/B6F...

2. How is this ****ing with them??
I see it as educating. It's relatively harmless as well.
And if their policy hasn't changed in 5 years, then what difference does the age of the link make?

4. Your link is five long years old. They will NOT be moved. They did
issue a statement of their beliefs when this issue first came out (which, typically, are founded in scripture, as every excuse is) and they aren't going to change their minds. You will not "educate" them--they are relying on religious tracts and your berating them will do nothing.
The way to support a more inclusive charity is to do that--give your money to an outreach agency that does not discriminate.
Will you berate every other religion that discriminates as well? They all do, pretty much, in one way or another. And none of them return as much money to the recipients of their charity as SA does. They don't have rich CEOs making hundreds of thousands on their payroll, they have the lowest administrative costs going--they actually DO engage in charitable works in some of the roughest neighborhoods in our nation. The do, in fact, do a great deal of good, even if they have a few blind spots.
If you're going to go after these guys, who at least don't rip off donors with bullshit "administrative" fees, you should be prepared to go after the Catholics, the Protestants, the Muslims, the Baptists, the Mormons, and all those other religions that behave badly on this score....and remember, none of them deliver as much of the charitable dollar to the needy as SA does.
Pass the kettle by if you don't agree with them. Don't stuff the thing full of angry notes--you're only hurting the local chapters that are helping people in your own community.
I don't like their views of lots of religions on issues of discrimination, against gays, women, about choice, etc. But I am not about to DEMAND that a religion, or a religious charity, adhere to my beliefs. I'll just leave them to their own devices if I don't like their policies.
DUmmies do not understand that moral people do stand by their convictions. It's an alien concept for the democrat party comrades.

24. Those kettles can get very full on weekends. One of my recovering drunk friends
who works at a restaurant I go to occasionally used to do that bell ringing thing, that's how I learned about it and the whole recovery/job assistance/halfway house thing. Between the stuffed bills and coins, they can fill up quick on a brisk business evening. And when you can't open the thing up to smooth out the bills to make more room, they can get crammed in there inefficiently. Pieces of paper in there are just going to take up space that could be used by bills or coins.

It looks like to me Anne is trying a last-ditch effort to repeat last year's Top DUmmie award.
Too little, too late.
She is really a wretched miserable old bitch, isn't she?
It's obvious she never had that much-needed surgical operation suggested--out of true sincerity and Christian concern for her well-being--in her award last year.
She's lost. She's beyond the pale.

She is wretched. I've had more liberal leaning folks approach me for local causes whether it be to support a candidate or participate in one of their efforts to 'help the world' ie Amnesty INternational type of crap. Here's what I do do DUmmies--I POLITELY decline. I don't give a lecture, I don't put stupid pieces of worthless paper in their hands, and I don't try and 'educate' them. And those requests I've had, seeing as they aren't really charitable in any way, probably could stand a little ridicule :-) but I still don't bother.
The other person schooling her is right on; you will not 'educate' anyone. This is someone or an organizations stated belief system. They intend to exclude only because they have to do so in order to uphold the belief system that is true to them. As I see it, it is not done with malice, but out of a sincere desire to live up to their beliefs. I've seen this with liberals so often..they get so angry with relatives and such who don't agree with them and their beliefs(which are based often on nothing more then their own greed), yet they think everyone else should be educated, even when the person might be well aware of the exclusive nature of their who or what they organize with but they've made a choice to assemble as they see fit. I guess they don't understand that in this country we are still free to associate with whomever we want. Not all of us need educating. I like too how only Christians, whites, etc are the ones who need educating. Muslims are very exclusive in their belief system. I don't see the wretched bitch going to CAIR and stuffing their offices full of 'thin paper' protests. Chicken shit!

49. I disagree with those policys also,
but I still throw change in when I see them.
My Granny rang the bells for extra cash after my grandpop died.
Every time I hear them they remind me of her...
Granny was cool, and she loved me, and I miss her still.
RIP Granny.

If DUmmies can stand by their immoral convictions, the Salvation Army can stand by their moral convictions....that would be tolerance, wouldn't it? ...and we all know that liberal DUmmies are all about tolerance.
Tolerance for their wicked ways but none for your moral ways.

Really? Griping about the Salvation Army? Good grief, what silliness.
Don't they have about the highest percentage of donations that actually go to fund their programs and not support the management? They don't ask about a person's beliefs or make them sign a statement of loyalty when giving aid. They just serve everyone they can help.
What has the bitter, griping heifer done for others?

Yep, that's exactly why I only donate to two charities. Salvation Army and the Pan Mass Challenge where 100% of the money collected actually make it to the Jimmy fund.

Ditto on the PMC. That's okay, for every dipshit stuffing a three-dollar bill into the kettle, there's an anonymous donor who does this:

What a nasty thread about a good organization that helps people.
-
You know, I'm going to be snotty here but I don't care at this point, at times I have to sink to their level.
With the Obamaeconomy sucking as much as it does there are people who are hungry, record numbers of people on food stamps, well I want to know what Muslims do to help those in need? to help those who are hungry? looking for shelter? then I want to ask what the nasty regressives in that thread what they have done to help those who are hungry and in need of shelter? then I want to ask the Atheists what they have done for people who are hungry and in need to shelter? and how many of the groups I listed have helped with heating assistance? The Christian Churches and towns work in network with 1 another, they collect and distribute food from their congregants, if 1 pantry is in need of something they contact another pantry.
Before I get too nasty I'll just shut up, and do this :bird:

They hate the Salvation Army for the same reasons they hate conservative women and/or minorities. They don't follow the liberal narrative - that 'Rethugs' are a bunch of wealthy, white male 1%ers who are getting richer off the backs of the poor and downtrodden, or a bunch of white, racist, NASCAR lovin' , beer-swillin' , uneducated rednecks..
Conservative people who don't fit that description must be destroyed, as well as organizations with conservative ideals.
-
I would sure hate to have to live the lives these miserable people live.

Oh, they do have their brief moments of joy and triumph - every time they manage to piss on something decent and good.

Too bad we can't do a make-over of "It's a Wonderful Life" and show these bigots what would happen if they actually did destroy all those "intolerant" conservatives and Christians. This world on only liberal charity would be a truly cold, hard, starving place. There are none so blind as those that will not see.
-
United Way lost my donations years ago when they went against the Boy Scouts of America for not having fagots as troop leaders. Red Cross lost it when they funneled my 9/11 donation on to other places I had not intended it to go. The SA is the only national organization that I donate to now. IIRC 95% of your donation goes to the intended. UW and RC get up into the 70% levels.
-
I donated to the Salvation Army yesterday...twice...on my way into Wal-Mart and on my way out.
The nice gentleman thanked me and wished me Merry Christmas and I wished him the same. I expect to donate again, given the opportunity.
-
They would rather see a poor or infirm person sleep on the streets or go hungry rather than have them receive a message of hope and God's love to go along with their food and shelter, so puerile is their hatred of God and anything Christian. Then they have the nerve to invoke the words of Jesus when it comes to how Christians should be treating their fellow man. It's especially sick in light of the fact that the vast majority of them do nothing to help others except bitch on a web site or camp in a public park and decree those activities as, "Standing up for the poor". It's enough to vomit over.
-

DAMN. She's ugly on the outside, ugly on the inside. I swear she looks like a gargoyle.
She is a liberal, thats for sure. I get a kick out of reading microexpressions. Watch her eyebrows right above the bridge of her nose.
That thing she is doing suggests she is angry and disgusted with either the questions she is answering, or the interviewer.
Now watch the video again, and look at what she does with the corners of her mouth. More anger and disgust.
Now watch it a 3rd time, and look at how she shakers her head 'no' every time she mentions about how the teachers put this program together, without people standing over them telling them what to do, and again when mentioning nobody knows the children better than us. She is lying. She also shrugs her shoulders a few times, but since I cant see what she is doing with her hands, I really can't comment on it. It could be she is talking with her hands, or it could indicate she is making her little speech up as she goes along.
-
Yeah, she looks about like I expected her to.
She posted in a DUmp picture thread a while back... they must have been taken when Carter was in the White House.
-
She's a union drone. She likes the curriculum she and the other drones were allowed to make up because it won't cut into her copy-and-paste DUmp time.
-
What a wicked, un-washed wench.
-
So gays can't work for the SA...
...but something tells me they've assisted many gay homeless/addicts over the decades without question or hesitation.
As with all things liberal, the complaint isn't about helping people, it's about who holds the power.
-
Bally asked:
I want to ask what the nasty regressives in that thread what they have done to help those who are hungry and in need of shelter?
Well, about 12 months ago, OffWithTheirHeads claimed he gave a peanut butter sandwich (no jelly) and a glass of water (not milk) to some vagrant knocking on doors. No shelter though, he had to move along, as OFTH was roasting a goose at the time. Then, some faceless DUmmie claimed he gave up his Ramen Noodle lunch in order to go into McDonald's instead, where he bought a bum a dollar menu lunch, while getting his own. I can't think of anything else.
Check out the permanent frown lines between The Bitch's eyebrows. A telltale sign of what's within.

75. Would you say that if it were the Concerned Citizens Council?
Or the Klan? I find it very interesting that people are willing to toss gay rights overboard for the sake of charity, I wonder why we don't do so with race?
Well, for one thing, you can't choose your race. All Y'all queer make a conscious decision to be butt buddies. Dykes are even more confusing. The women hate men so much that they wear a strap-on an act like men. WTF is that all about?

H5 for these excellent points!
If I may, I'd like to add the question "what are LGBT groups doing other than supporting their self-serving charities"?

I don't know about that. Worriers tend to get those kinds of lines. Sometimes that comes with a lot of responsibility early that keeps mounting. But you can still have a nice life and be generally happy, but its hard to escape the lines of life if the things that create them come often enough, even with a good attitude and trying to smile through it. I guess what we could examine is is her worry worthwhile or is about the stupid shit that liberals like to create? Probably the latter. For someone like me it came with a rough childhood, deaths of loved ones, divorce, caring for a son who can not look out for himself, trying to support my family, etc. They wre created by real responsibilites not self-created boogie men to burden other folks with.

For all their other possible shortcomings, I'm pretty sure the Muslims and even the Atheists have it all over the Regressives on that score, by a very wide margin.

The Salvation Army is usually one of the first groups to respond to natural disasters, often long before the government shows up.

And I ****ed back.
One of them owns a dance studio, which closed and moved to a cheaper location last year, I suspect because the economy has been so sour. I've been reading the monthly schedule of classes. Watching it shrink each week, dwindling to less than half its size of 2010.
I don't feel good about it.
It seems a bit righteous. i

But that's an easy trap to fall into it.

Interesting that this particular post came up today.
On the way home from work, I stopped at Walmart to pick up some hearing-aid batteries.
Normally I avoid Walmart because of the crowds.
This time of year I usually don't, because I know there's going to be a bell-ringer out front.
There was, and, I did.
That said, this is for you, p2bk and leftscrunt. :bird: :bird: :bird:
