"Muslim medical students boycotting lectures on evolution... because it 'clashes with Koran"

"Muslim students, including trainee doctors on one of Britain's leading medical courses, are walking out of lectures on evolution claiming it conflicts with creationist ideas established in the Koran.
Professors at University College London have expressed concern over the increasing number of biology students boycotting lectures on Darwinist theory, which form an important part of the syllabus, citing their religion.
Similar to the beliefs expressed by fundamentalist Christians, Muslim opponents to Darwinism maintain that Allah created the world, mankind and all known species in a single act.
Steve Jones emeritus professor of human genetics at university college London has questioned why such students would want to study biology at all when it obviously conflicts with their beliefs."
......
"Evolutionary Biologist and former Oxford Professor Richard Dawkins has expressed his concern at the number of students, consisting almost entirely of Muslims, who do not attend or walk out of lectures."

Let them walk out if they want

But I wouldn't make a separate test for them.
Yep. Walk out if you want, but if you don't know it, you DON'T GET THE DEGREE

Losing patients, as in having them die unnecessarily, is already far too common...

...and is, for that matter, EXACTLY what medical school is supposed to prevent. We attempt to not allow people whose irrationality clearly and obviously interferes with their ability to do a job to have professional certificates asserting that they can do the job.
If my doctor is up against an antibiotic-resistant microbe, they had damned well better understand evolution. It matters a lot.
If they were dedicated professionals, they wouldn't walk out of classes, and they'd abandon the foolishness in their religion that interferes with their ability to do the job they are training for.
How is this not racism, bigotry, and intolerance? You hate brown people! </dumode>

I wondered what the Islamacist "take" was, on evolution.
It looks like the primitives wouldn't care much for it.
I don't want to turn this into an "evolutionist-creationism" thread--no way, please, no way--and I myself have no opinion on the matter (no, I really don't; there's more important things in life to worry about, than the origin of man, and I'd just as soon worry about those things), but there was a Gallup poll posted on freerepublic about four years ago, taken in the United Kingdom that showed nearly half the British don't "believe" in evolution.
Hmmmm.
As the British are the most secular people in Europe, one can't blame that on "Bible thumpers" and "fundies."
One wonders what one can blame it on.

Skepticism. Common sense. Enough knowledge of history to know that today's science will be tomorrow's laughing stock?

That's probably it.
Today's science becoming tomorrow's bunk.
History's full of such examples.
That's why I don't even bother with it; it's not so important where man came from, but rather more important about where man's going.

Amen!

I suppose my attitude about this whole "evolution versus creationism" debate is colored by my personal perception of God, the main thing being that God has a sense of humor.
And God's sense of humor is most-frequently applied when someone thinks he "has it all figured out."
I know in my own life, there's been too many times to count that I've thought I've had something all figured out, all squared away, discovered the final truth (or had the last word) on the matter.....and then ooops, it's all upset.
Reality is infinite; the ability of the human brain to see and understand is finite.
That's why I get so much entertainment out of reading the mike_c primitive on Skins's island; he vainly imagines he's a rational logical thinker, and has things all figured out. I haven't seen God apply it yet, but I'm pretty sure God's going to upset the mike_c primitive's applecart sooner or later, showing that the mike_c primitive doesn't know anything more about things than anybody else does.
Reality--which includes science--is infinite.
The ability of the human brain to see and understand is finite, not even a speck of sand in the whole universe.

I'm a Christian. I believe in creation. BUT. I was never ever excused from Darwin/evolution classes. I could believe whatever I wanted as long as I was also conversant in evolution theory.
If I was not allowed to skip lectures, why are muslims exempt from the same requirements?
Its the same double standard I see all the time with muslims. How can such big babies rule the world?

Yeah, the last sentence above, sir.
I'm intrigued as to how the Islamophile primitives are going to handle this.
Of course, they haven't yet handled the issues of the Islamacist position on gayiety or the status of women yet either.

My daughter is in Biology this semester, and the subject is 100% geared toward evolution. When she complained, I told her she had to learn it, but she doesn't have to believe it has all the answers. As time goes by, knowledge will change anyway. As with most "fundy" Christians, I expect my kids to have a solid education in both current secular knowledge and Christian theology.

.....doesn't have to believe it has all the answers.
What you said, madam.
I've always been leery of people who insist they know all, who insist they know the final truth, have the last word.
I personally got no problem with the theory of evolution, as it all makes sense to me, but I'll be damned if I take it as the final authority on the matter. It's an interesting topic for dinnertime conversation and debate, but no more than that.

It's clearly a fact that things evolve. I just think they've extrapolated a little too far. Still, what we do actually know, I want my kid to understand. :-)

A couple or three years ago I read an article in a British publication about their Muslim doctors. I can't remember the exact question but it was something pertaining to his Muslim beliefs and his answer was , "You would do well to remember that he who cures you can also kill you."
