I gave some guy thirty bucks and a ride home tonight.

This fellow, I'll call him Ken, was in a tight spot.

He's completely broke and has a daughter who lives with her mother, his estranged girl friend. I guess Herman Cain would say that it's his own fault. Tonight, he found out he has to work Friday which coincides with his visitation with his daughter.

So he'll make about seventy bucks that day and pay someone fifty bucks to sit his daughter, and get maybe two hours with her.

This guy is my coworker.

He works fifty hours a week. He literally has nothing but his visitation with his daughter, a cheap motel room, and the thirty bucks I gave him. He told me he had no money for turkey dinner.

I couldn't let that happen.

In previous years my wife and I made good money, so I could afford to help him out a bit. But it's not sustainable. She is retired, and I make 1/3 what I used to.

So I'm thankful that I was able to help someone, but sad that it was so desperately needed in a nation swimming in wealth hoarded by the 1%

In better times, I had a boss who was from Sweden. She told me that money is like manure. If it piles up in one place, it stinks and it doesn't do any good. If you spread it around instead, things grow and the stink goes away.

I think spreading a bit around is good advice.

Happy Thanksgiving to all.

I'm not belittling the guy for helping out a co-worker with a ride home and $30.  What I am belittling is the DUmp post.  They always do this.  If they do one little favor for one little spot of humanity, they trumpet it loud and clear, instead of just quietly going on with life.  LOOK AT ME!!!!  $30!!!!!.  Why didn't he bring the guy home for Thanksgiving, anyway?

1. You did a really good thing, Steve...
I'm sure your coworker is really grateful.

How awful he has to work Friday. That just breaks my heart...

How awful!!! A nightmare to have to work!!!  Big deal, I worked too.

Then, the thread is a big circle jerk what a regular superhero this guy is, how fantastic, how altruistic.  It's sickening.  I'm reminded of some instruction in the Bible...Jesus wants us to keep this stuff on the down-low.  Not broadcast it far and wide.  Makes God roll his eyes.   :-)

Here's one who is slipping in a little bragging, in the style of Greenbriar:

32. Bless your heart... to people who have almost nothing, $30 can be a real life saver.
I have a divorced buddy who has a crappy job and after he pays child support and rent, he has maybe $10 left for the rest of the week.

I help him out when he'll let me, but mostly I give him my recent computers, TV, smartphones etc when I upgrade.

Now it's my turn..........

Every December, early in the month, I give $20 to each of the six or so currently employed check out clerks at our local grocery store. They get minimum wage or on SS, some are single moms or divorced or widowed, etc. But in the best Ayn Rand fashion, my wife and I get a little better and friendlier service through the year.

I don't do it altruistically or expecting anything in return. It just works out that way.

That's the difference between us and them, when we do something nice for someone we don't rush and post to the world that we did such and such for so and so. We do whatever and move on with our lives.

I have to work today and I have my daughter with me because her mom has to work and her Step Father is with his relatives. Most of the family spent Thanksgiving with their side ofthe family and it was just me ,my mother and my 16 year old daughter. I didn't beg for anythimg and we had a nice dinner. Also more importantly is that as has been pointed out none of us had go out and post online about our kindness or our situation. Until now.

I had breakfast at a Waffle House this morning.

My tab was about six bucks.

I left a three-dollar tip.

It was like manure in my wallet, so I gave it to a waitress with a gold tooth an an angel tattoo on the back of her hand.

I'm a great guy.

I shoulda posted that at the DUmp.

I just drove four hundred miles (rt) to pick up five flying squirrels to take to a rehabber here in Texas.
Cost me a hundered bucks in gas.
I don't care.
They're going to a good new home.
Bite me, DUmmies.

So you discard the junk you don't want anymore on your "buddy".  What is he, your personal garbage man?

Cheapskate!   :bird:

Ok, let me get this straight. You give him your used crap every year or so(if that frequently)?  :lmao: Man, you are a philanthropic giant!! And what does the man with barely enough to buy himself dinner each week do with those? I mean we all know that you aren't exaggerating so how would he turn any of those electronics on (ie cable, data plan, etc) to even use them? and ok so he sells your used crap--what's that good for? couple hundred bucks a year? And if you are replacing things like tvs and computers every year, you seriously don't have cash to give your buddy to help him out instead? I mean that's what you want the taxpayer to give right--cash for charity?

I smell a stinkeroo!

The thanksgiving I will always remember the best was spent serving meals at the old veterans home in DC.
