If Only We had Re-elected Jimmy Carter

Here is a good article from last year:

Given impetus by the 1973 Arab oil embargo, Carter's efforts to begin to wean America off its dependence on fossil fuels, especially imported oil, ground to a halt. The fall of the Shah of Iran, the take-over of the U.S. embassy in Tehran, not only precipitated yet another oil shock, but also proved Carter's undoing, with the connivance of Republican politicians who reportedly cut a secret deal with the Iranians to not release the hostages until the day of Reagan's inauguration. Regardless of the back room politics, the Iranian oil embargo only reemphasized how vulnerable America was to oil blackmail.

It was the "Gipper" who effectively gutted the nation's renewable energy research program, forcing wind and solar energy research to shift to Europe. Germany and Denmark, in particular, are now the world leaders in both technologies, though India and China are both coming on strong.

What if America had kept Carter's pledge to no longer be held hostage of oil politics? When he took office in 1977, America was importing 48 percent of its oil, but by the time he left office, his policies had shrunk this to 40 percent, a drop of 1.8 million barrels a day. Six months before the start of the Iraq-Iran war, Carter came within a hair's breadth of getting important energy legislation passed.

By April 1980, he had gotten much of his second energy package through, including a Crude Oil Windfall Profits Tax (with revenues designated for the general Treasury but not for specific energy projects), which would expire in 1993 or before, if the full amount of $227 billion had been collected. But there were two major defeats: Congress overrode a presidential veto of a bill that Congress had passed repealing a $4.62 per barrel oil import fee -- the first time in twenty-eight years that a Congress had overridden a veto by a president from the majority party. It also defeated the Energy Mobilization Board that Carter had proposed to cut through "red tape" in developing new sources of energy

Jimmy Carter was a nightmare.

I dunno why the primitives thought he was so great, but quite obviously it's only primitives who think he was great.

Primatives have a deep inherent fear of wabbits. :whistling:

I can't imagine how deeply in trouble this nation would have been in.
We wouldn't have needed BO, in order to see the buttom.

If Carter would have been re-elected, there would be no Barack Hussein Obama.

Mainly because there would have been no America.

Thank you sir. I've always wondered if Lee Atwater did not die if Bush 41 would have won and the pervert never stepped foot in the WH.

If Carter was so ****in great then why did he lose in a landslide? There were just as many Dems pissed off at Carter then Republicans. I remember those years well enough and the country would have torn itself apart again over getting his ass out of the White House

The original poster, probably hadn't even reached puberty when Dhimmi Carter was in office.
His info no doubt came from Naddling the web, and ran with whatever liberal site came up.

J. Carter, a fine and decent man, unfortunately he had no idea that Politics runs on booze, cigars, wild woman,  drugs and back room deals made over a poker table.

We did wonder how banning all this from the WH would effect his meetings with the Pentagon, and the High Rolling big business men, Lobbyists and the heads of State from all over the world that were not used to none of the above, not being there.----Even the Queen of England did enjoy a glass of wine and a smoke from time to time.

Now we know,  he forgot it was the hard drinking,  Northerners  the brother classmates at the Academy who won a war against the South where most of their leaders were perfect gentleman did not smoke ,drink or debauch from time to time.  As well as both sides knew each other ,the Generals of the South were all sober and predictable, the Northern Generals totally out of control, General Hooker, for example, he knew how to keep his troops happy.

I wonder what he thought in 1980 or so when the Nimitz having been at sea for 9 months or so was still at sea and the Navy flew in enough canned beer so each crew man was allotted 2 cans of brew each.  Operation Gonzo as I recall.

Can anyone tell me how Carter a Sub Captain did now know the crew of his boat was making Gilly in the aft torpedo compartments ???

Interesting times, Carter lived by his ethics not understanding there is true EVIL out there in the world.  He forgot that when in Rome, do as the Romans do.

To stay safe for a country we do not need a Pacifist or weak leader.   We need a leader with just one thing on their mind, Protect against all outsiders ,and to do that they have to have the same mind set.  Protect American from all their threats foreign and domestic.

Poor Carter, a true Southern Gentleman, much like Robert E LEE. I personally would like to see a leader much like General Sherman, go in, get the job done anyway they can.

A fine and decent man? Yeah. That's what I thought too. Years and years ago. I thought he was a fine and decent man that was just a bit naive and stupid. His actions in the last few years, however, have changed my mind about the fine and decent part.

Or had Wilikie won in 1936.  Or had TR won in 1912.

We could go round and round on this one.  Bottom line, Carter lost for a very good reason--or a series of them, actually.

I'm guessing the DUmmie forgot, or more likely never heard, Carter on television telling us to put on a sweater.  Oil imports decreased during Carter's tenure due to one thing, and one thing only--the beginning of the production from the Alaska Pipeline.

Without that event, foreign oil imports would have increased dramatically between 1977-81, making the oil shortage in 1979 that much WORSE.

In the mid-seventies, a USDA co-worker and I were assigned to clean up the Georgia, Florida and Alabama Peanut Grower's Association. It was a co-op under Federal contract to manage peanut production, marketing and pricing.

Carter was a member, and his operation was as corrupt (as in millions of dollars) as any of the other member's farms, shellers and warehouses, and the association itself!

But that's another story for another day............

Some stuff I've read recently, as people close to that administration finally give out information in their later years that they treated with great discretion in their younger days, tends to paint that 'Decent but naive man' as a sneaky, manipulative sharp-tongued bastard when the cameras weren't on him.

If Jimmeh had been reelected we would have soon been neck deep in Nicaragua, full blown involvement with U.S. ground troops neck deep or he would have ignored it and allowed it to grow and spread across all of Latin America. I can't decide which would have been worse.

As it happened president Reagan dealt with the Soviet/Cuban/Marxist situation as it needed to be WITHOUT the drama of it becoming a direct U.S. involvement Vietnam sequel that would have torn this country apart at the time.

The Nicaraguan situation was what it was and it wasn't going away on its own. Jimmeh wasn't half the man Ronald Reagan was. Hell, Jimmeh wasn't half the man Ronald Reagan's butler was and if we had Jimmeh as C-in-C in the early 80's he most certainly would have sat on his hands or sought to appease the communist threat in Latin America and allow it to grow exponentially until he had no choice but to send in the troops.

Thank God for Ronald Reagan.  :usflag:

I do thank God for Ronald Reagan, the first president I ever voted for, and the greatest president in my lifetime (so far.)

And a Happy Thanksgiving to all Cavers and lurkers out there!

If this greeting makes you smile, you're welcome.
If the greeting offends you and pisses you off, remember the immortal words of Redd Foxx, who would close his show like this:
"If you were offended, go, leave, knowing this.  If you were offended, I DON'T GIVE A SHIT!"
