Chicken jerky treats may be to blame for dozens of new reports of mysterious illnesses and some deaths in dogs, prompting a renewed warning for pet owners by the Food and Drug Administration.

At least 70 dogs have been sickened so far this year after reportedly eating chicken jerky products imported from China, FDA officials said. That’s up from 54 reports of illness in 2010. Some of the dogs have died, according to the anecdotal reports from pet owners and veterinarians.

FDA officials say they have not been able to find a cause for the illnesses. Extensive chemical and microbiological testing has failed to turn up a specific contaminant and officials did not identify a specific brand of treats. They note that the reports of illness have not conclusively been tied to chicken jerky products, also sold as chicken tenders, chicken strips or chicken treats.  ---MORE--- (http://vitals.msnbc.msn.com/_news/2011/11/21/8885427-chicken-jerky-treats-linked-to-mystery-illnesses-deaths-in-dogs)

Sorry, I know this isn't important to some, but this happened to Bentley last year. He got deathly sick after we fed him these about a year ago. We had to take him to the afterhours vet because he was lethargic. They had to give him fluids for 2 days.

Don't think that the packaging is going to be in Chinese or Mandarin; they're packaged in US packaging. The ones we used to buy came from Sam's. Even if you don’t have a dog, forward this on to someone who does. The Chinese were also linked to renal failure in several dogs a few years back with, IIRC, Pedigree canned dog food.

Thank You Thank You Thank You! We have a brand new puppy (ok 15 weeks) that we were thinking the jerky treats might be good for her, since she LOVES to chew. I think we'll just stick with what we're doing now.

OMG that is so scary. Our dog will only eat very soft treats and doesn't like anything that requires chewing like jerky or rawhide. Man, that is scary though!

I have been having problems with Angus not eating, and he is a chow hound.  We thought it was his food (Beneful), and the last bag I had smelled bad.  I changed his food and he eats like nobody's business.  He would still eat the jerky, just not his regular food.  I am getting rid of that TONIGHT!

Don't know about yours, but my dog is in full concurrence.  Bacon or don't bother.

I nearly lost a cat a few years ago from tainted cat food, dry, Purina.

My two others never got sick but my oldest did.  The vet said he had no idea what she had. No one knew about the bad food until months later when pets started dying. My old girl couldn't keep anything down or control the other end.  After a 3 day hospital stay she came home.  Vet couldn't identify what it was, tests came up negative. He was puzzled.

When I found out about the food, I called him.  He said it could very well have been that. I had her on 3 medications, she lost a lot of weight. A week later, some different food, she recovered.

If your dog or cat vomits a lot or has uncontrollable diarrhea, get them to the vet quick. An animal can dehydrate very quickly.

My dogs only get the same beef/turkey/buffalo jerky that I eat.
