Is pepper spray torture?
Hard to argue that it's not. This police academy trainee experienced pepper spray as part of his education.

So, I went and faced the guy with the spray, closed my eyes (we were able to close our eyes, however it does NOT help) and got sprayed in the face. Then I ran to the first person with the kick pad and had to open my eyes and as soon as my eyes opened--OH. MY. GOSH.---Worst pain EVER, literally. It was unbelievable. Searing and burning, especially in the left eye. So I ran over to where they'd set up some buckets with water and some hoses and tried to wash my eyes out. Someone squirted some baby soap in my hand and I rubbed it on my eyes and tried to rinse it off...and I was having trouble breathing and the pain was just UNBELIEVABLE. Then someone led me around in the shade while I tried to blink and get my eyes open, because apparently blinking as much as possible and letting the wind hit my face. It was hard to breathe for a while, I was just taking gulping breaths.
My face felt like it was ON FIRE. My eyes were searing with pain and my face felt like someone threw boiling water on it! I walked around and fanned myself with a towel and the pain did slowly subside...and those of us who had gone earlier in the afternoon were able to help out those who drew the higher numbers and went last. I couldn't drive home at the end of the day, though...my eyes were still stinging a little bit, and everything was so bright outside...you know how when you get your eyes dilated, you're really sensitive to the sun? It was like that. I had my glasses on with sunglasses on top of them, but could barely open my eyes. So, I got someone to drive me home and just left my car there.
When I got home I leaned over the tub and washed my face and neck with baby soap a couple of times...when the water ran down my arms, they started burning, too. Now as I sit here at the computer my left eye will sting and start watering about every 20 minutes or so...and my left eye especially is really really red...but other than that, and being a little stuffy, I feel okay. Overall....the experience was horrible! Never want to go through that again! But now we all know what the spray is like, and we know how we react to it if we ever get sprayed on accident, or if we have to use it on someone (which happens quite a bit in the jail for people who get out of control).

Personally, I've never been hit with this stuff, and I believe different people may have different reactions, or varying degrees of reactions/irritation. Could one of you vets/currently serving/or cops illuminate me on what it's like to get pepper sprayed? I can't imagine it being "torture" as torture is defined. No fun? I have no doubt, but torture?

Thanks for the vivid description of the pepper spray experience, blue. It gives me a greater appreciation of the videos of the protesters getting a face full of the stuff.

In most tortures that I have heard of, the victim is not free to get up and walk away at any time.

Pepper spray may indeed be torture. It causes misery. It causes suffering. I guess blue agrees that instead of pepper spray or night sticks the police should use a humane means to tame the lunatic. Something that is quick and painless when used correctly. The police have the means to do this. They wear it in a holster on their belts.

They try so hard to be smart and fail so miserably. It's sad. If you could not hear me, it would be hard to tell if I was laughing or crying right now.

Great point. They were told to disperse, and since human bodies don't come equipped with handles, I think the pepper spray was the most civil course of action.

I'd rather be pepper sprayed than shot by a gun. Of course being pepper sprayed would hurt like a motha... but you wouldn't get sprayed if you listened to the demands of the police. Just a thought.

My father and I were just wondering what would the result be if an AH-64D Apache attack helicopter hovered over a large gathering of OWS like in NYC, and boomed over the intercom "Disperse....NOW!!" We both agreed that they would not only scatter like quail, they'd also shit their pants. This is all hypothetical, however, of course.

From what I hear about the conditions at these so called OWS "camps", no one would notice if they shit themselves or not, they may actually smell better.
My stepson was pepper sprayed as part of his training as a prison guard. He's got a video of it. His 2 brothers and I laughed our butts when he showed it to us.
The "kindest" (least expletive laced) comment he had was, "very *******, *** **** unpleasant!" :lmao:
Is the poor DUmmie's eyes still burning. :bawl:

Yup its horrid, you get huge snot ropes as your sinuses drain and your eyes scream stay closed. The reason we use it is that it works. Very few people want to continue resisting when they have a facetious of of. I get sprayed regularly by accident when we have a pile on fight and I still hate it. Even hours later you will get some residue turn up and you start with the snotters all. Over again.

I have never been pepper sprayed, hit with a night stick, tasered or arrested.....because every time I had an occasion to interact with police officers, I did exactly as I was told. Simple, really.

We pepper sprayed each other in crowd control training with the ARNG so we'd know what it felt like. Got some CS in the chamber in boot camp. I'd choose pepper spray over CS any day of the week.
All these idiots have to do to avoid getting sprayed, clubbed or arrested is to obey the LEOs instructions. The politicians and powers that be have been far too lenient. This crap wouldn't have gone on this long back in the 60's.
