Title: Thanksgiving plans
Post by: franksolich on November 19, 2011, 04:37:55 PM
Okay, here it is, the Saturday before Thanksgiving, and hence time to get the annual tradition going, that of members telling us their plans and hopes for the holiday.

Me, I suppose I'll be at that truck stop for some hours doing some accounting work on Wednesday, Thanksgiving Eve, and then I have to get back here to have dinner with the ancient elderly couple who own this place.  They have lots and lots of children and grandchildren, and so spend the actual day at the home of one of them.

Thanksgiving Day, about noon, I'll be with the neighbors--the neighbor, the neighbor's wife, their 6-year-old twin daughters, their 4-year old son, and an infant son about six months old.  It'll be my first Thanksgiving there without Auntie, the primitive aunt of the neighbor's wife, from Kansas City.  Auntie alas will be spending Thanksgiving in another time and place.

The femme will be in Omaha for five days with one of her sisters, who lives there, shopping, so I'm not in their plans.

The senior business partner will drive all the way here from the midst of the Sandhills, sometime on Thursday.  He might, or might not, make it to the neighbors' for chow.  After that, we'll do something, but I dunno what.  He's staying here until Saturday.

On Saturday night, I'll be working the truck stop, behind the cash-register, so that a regular clerk can have time off with her family.  It sounds odd, a deaf person doing such a job, but generally the only customers are long-distance truck-drivers and law-enforcement personnel, the sorts of people who find it easy to be patient with a deaf person, even if he gives them a Powerball ticket when they've asked for a package of Marlboro cigarettes.

It should be okay.

I'll be visiting my parents Thursday afternoon.  I have a four-day vacation for a change, so instead of heading right back to work on Friday morning I'll probably hang out at home and try to get some other work done.

We are flying back to Wisconsin for the first time in six years to have Thanksgiving with the family.  It will be Carleigh's first Thanksgiving with her extended family.  We will go down to Illinois to visit with my husband's family too.

The only people who know we are coming in for Thanksgiving are our parent's.  It's going to be a surprise for everyone else.  :)

I'm not traveling this year, and it depends on the weather whether family can make it here.  Have one daughter at home who has to work the day before and the day after.  I may work in the morning if anyone really needs treatment.  Otherwise patients seem to appreciate holidays off, too.

We've been invited to eat with several friends, but I think we're going to have a small dinner at home and go to a sledding party later that day.

My grandmother is having fairly major surgery the Tuesday after Thanksgiving, so my mom and aunt will be heading up there on Sunday to help her out with my grandfather (who has Alzheimers) and to just help her do stuff after the surgery.  As a result, we're doing a really low key Thanksgiving.  I'll probably spend most of the weekend trying to decipher organic chemistry

Isn't that unusual, in-laws and in-laws spending a holiday together?

Or perhaps they get along exceptionally well?

Yes they have always got along. Back in high school when I was dating Kevin they used to be on a bowling league together...by choice.

All the best on your organic chemistry class.  I had a real love-hate attitude about it.

My daughter is picking up her best friend and her (friend's) boyfriend at the Tucson airport on Thanksgiving, and they're staying overnight to do sightseeing the next day.  The friend doesn't like turkey, so they're probably doing Chinese for dinner.  My son is working at the ambulance company for the holiday since his son is spending this holiday with his mother.  We get the grandson for Christmas though. :yahoo:

As for hubby and me, probably just going to cook the turkey I bought when I thought there'd be a few extra people to eat it...didn't realize my daughter's friend's boyfriend is super allergic to cats and dogs and thus can't step foot in my abode.  Plus the aforementioned distaste for turkey.  Oh yeah, DD is dropping off her doggie Wednesday evening for us to babysit over the four day weekend while she has her friends visiting. :whatever:

I don't care, I am still roasting a turkey, and making dressing, cranberry sauce, gravy, rolls and yam casserole.  It wouldn't be Thanksgiving without pigging out.  I'm actually going to enjoy this entire upcoming week since hubby is taking comp time-3 days/24 hours and it's all free thanks to his long hours business trip to Korea last month.

The dogs and cats will probably each get some turkey, if they are good.  Or, if they beg loudly enough. :rotf:

Yeah, even though none of them are Jews.
I would have made a ham, but William would probably have to be evacuated from my home for his allergic reaction.  We do have all those pesky dander carrying critters, after all. :p

All the adult kids have plans this year -- Just Mom, Hubby and me.

Heading for her house so Hubby stopped and ordered a pre made dinner to be picked up Wed. night from McKinnon's a catering Co that also is a Market and Super Butcher Shop.

All their dinners serve 8-10 people, we can split the left overs with Mom and when she has company she can just  freeze, then Microwave  the food and serve an army. Or eat on that dinner for the next 6 months.

Problem, Why do these business not sell dinners for 4-6 people.   Hubby brought home the Menu and I about fell off my chair, price for turkey dinner is $150.  bucks.    What was he thinking, are we going to freeze leftovers and serve them on Christmas day ????

Checking out the prices for other dinners ----turkey is the cheapest dinner, darn one could feed a small reception at a wedding or funeral.  Side dishes and Plates are I believe where they make their money,  the cost for finger sandwiches  36 0f them is over $50.00   I can make the same suckers for less then $20.00 at home.

But then one must take into consideration the cost of a home made dinner today. [so says Hubby]

Turkey, 18 pound frozen and all the work to defrost it, the cost to stuff it and the energy taken to cook it.

1/2 sheet pan of potatoes, the gravy I quart, Cranberry sauce at one quart, I quart each for squash, sweet corn, sweet peas 1 dozen dinner rolls, and a 10 inch pie.

To calm me down from having the vapors on the price to feed just 3 people he spent 30 minutes at the grocery store pricing all items I would have to buy and then prepare to cook for a day or so.

He came home all smiles, the price of food is going up so fast that it would cost me $135.00 to do this myself.

The $15.00 extra was the cost to let someone else do it, he compaired this to having someone else change the oil in his car or me taking clothing into the dry cleaners.

Wish I had known about the catering services years ago when all the kids were home.  All the time I spent in the kitchen I could have spent with family and friends.    Besides if we took Mom to a steak house that one meal would have cost at least $80-90 dollars with little left overs.

Changing my ways, not easy but I am trying in to days economy.

I will be traveling 4 hours north and spending it with my wonderful boyfriend, his children, and his extended family. My kids are going to be with dad this year. He would have let me have them every year since I was the driver behind tradition, but I think it's important for him to forge his own way with his children in this regard. Personally, I think he was avoiding having them on a major holiday, but like I said, I think it's important he stop using me as a crutch in establishing his own way with the children. Besides that, the two of us who really don't like being a part of big crowds are going to make our first attempt to go into the fray on Black Friday/Thursday night--as a team--armed with hot coffee and cash.  :lmao: I also need to get a new washer on Sears Kenmore half off sale that day-my waterpump on mine is leaking water profusely :banghead:

The weekend following that I'll be doing my usual Thanksgiving dinner(old habits die hard--I want Tgiving with my kids too :) I'm VCRing the Macy Parade, have a girlfriend(in the middle of her own divorce) and her kids coming over, my mother will roll in from work around dinner, and my beau may be comign down with his kids too. Thank you, frank. And I have no doubt it is pleasing to God when we not only come together to thank Him for all He's blessed us with, but do it in the spirit of love and goodwill as He intended. May I also say, I will be saying a prayer for the many other people who cared enough when they knew my kids would not be with me and offered their homes as well. I love that! Back when my ex and I were first together, we invited a good friend of ours to our table when she was not going back to Cali for Thanksgiving that year. To this day I consider her a close friend still and that goodwill has lasted a lifetime. Sure wish the DUers could understand how those little moments of giving and goodwill go so much further to bring us together then their little temper tantrums in the public square.

Enjoy the day, coach! Happy Thanksgiving!

Now that's the truth! :-) I'm not only doing that, but I already did step and a hike with the kids for about 3 miles yesterday. Going to run them on another one today and hit the treadmill for another 5 and plan to hit the gym the entire week in preparation.  :-) Best to come to this time of year armed with some extra space in the button up area.  :-)

I'll smoke a turkey on Wednesday, and then on Thursday we're going to our son's place (with his wife, whom our daughter and I hate from 5 years ago - won't go into it here). Our daughter is invited, too; we're on exactly the same page re: son's wife.

Should be interesting. My wife and I are taking separate cars. Take no action if you see a mushroom cloud over Chicago's south suburbs.  ::)

Well there's the double time we get paid to work that day.  Thats kinds special.  Plus since my dept is back stage, we usually fire up the BBQ and have a pot luck.  This year we are going to BBQ a turkey on our Weber.

The turkey that the President pardons every year ends up at either Disneyland or Disney World.  The one from last year is housed in a pen not too far from our work area.  If by chance that turkey goes missing after this Thrusday, don't come asking me any questions.  I won't know anything about it....

Hey, Jess, no one knows . . . except all of us. O-)

I'll be singing with the Combined Choirs at my church for 10 AM Mass (it'll be the last Mass we do under the old Roman Missal).  We'll have the usual full church on Thanksgiving Day.  Then, it's up to my sister's place about three miles from my parents, for the usual family madhouse that is ostensibly Thanksgiving Day dinner.  It's going to be quite the time.  I'm going deer hunting the next day, for the weekend.  Three years ago, one of our members shot two 10-pointers the day after Thanksgiving.

D-Land between Thanksgiving and Christmas...bearable because of the turkey legs and chimis that you can only get that time of year.

I did forgot to add  to last posts a new tradition in my family.

For the last 5 years I add an extra plate for the souls of the service men and woman that will never have a chance to join us.  Just that empty plate and all the bounty we have brings home the sacrifice they made for us.

Some in the family think I am NUTS to do this, but to me it has been a 5 year long tradition that gives me peace.    A way to remember and an in your face to those that never think that this dinner is because of their sacrifice. The sacrifice of all ancestors that died to allow us to partake of this meal.

What is Thanksgiving. but to not only thank  God for America .but for the blood sweat and tears shed to allow us in today's word to, live today as free .

Is this Pagan to feed the dead I have been asked, perhaps, but I am not feeding the dead, I am just placing a plate to remember the souls that cannot join us.  To remember the people that cannot join us due to their sacrifice for us to be able to partake of this dinner.

Gives the kids something to think about, Thanksgiving is a day to thank everyone for their safety and life, not just a day to pig out.

There will all ways be an extra plate for those that died to insure I have food, even if I am alone living under a bridge and homeless.

God Bless America and those that died to allow me to live here.

An addendum to my post waaaay up the thread--the music director asked me to cantor the 10 AM Thanksgiving Day Mass, seeing that I'm going to be one of the few cantors to be singing in the Combined Choirs.  All I have to do today is to "conserve" my voice, as I've been trying to shake this nasty chest cold that my daughter lovingly gave me. :banghead: ::) O-)

We are going to have my version of the feast a week later and then put up the tree and the decorations. I'm looking forward to the next two weekends surrounded by a lot of love and warmth of friends and family.  :)

This post made me smile -- just lovely, I can feel the warmth and how happy you are with every word.   I hope you have a great holiday jtyangel!

D-Land between Thanksgiving and Christmas...bearable because of the turkey legs and chimis that you can only get that time of year.

Scoobie and I are doing the home thing for Turkey Day itself, then Friday-Sunday I'm dragging her kicking and screaming to NYC while her mom watches the kids.

Black Friday in NYC???? SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO Jealous!!!    Have fun!

Yeah, we're staying at a place that overlooks the skating rink at Rockefeller Center.  Literally steps away from Radio City Music Hall.

She's got no idea what she's in for.

Well... plans change.  Part of the drain under this old house collapsed yesterday evening.  Of course that wasn't immediately obvious to me until I spent more time in the buggy dugout crawlspace than I ever cared to.

I worked a little this morning.  Went back into the hole and stared at the collapsed section of pipe, like I was suddenly going to have a brilliant idea of how to fix the darn thing (effortlessly), and gave up.  Fortunately, daughter is house and pet sitting for friends, so I will bunk over there with her.  Right now a shower sounds better than either of the pies I baked last night.  A shower, clean sheets, and a non-traditional dinner at the truck stop.

So, I'm thankful for friends who don't even know they are helping out right now!   :p

Well, Thanksgiving dinner is through and I'm stuffed.  It was just my wife and I, so here's what we had:
Smoked Turkey on the Backwoods Smoker using apple wood
Green Beans
sweet potatoe casserole
mashed potatoes
cornbread stuffing
pulled pork
deviled eggs
pickles, olives, stuffed cherry peppers
beer bread
pumpkin pie, pecan pie

For 2 people.  Are we crazy??????  Time to lay on the couch and watch football

Got that shower I was wanting.  And those pies were pretty good anyway.  Have a plumber lined up for tomorrow because friends called to wish me a Happy Thanksgiving and after making some pretty good plumbing jokes they called a local guy at home and he's lined up for tomorrow.

Had some ranch friends call and ask my daughter and I to play elves and go to Walmart for them tonight and get some stuff so they don't have to drive from their place into town.  I'm pretty sure our stores don't get near as wild or crowded as what most places get.  We'll see.  I've never tried to hit a sale.

At the restaurant it was my daughter and I and one other family of non-Indians.  A family of Crow were sitting by us.  The dad asks what Thanksgiving meant to me.  So, I'm trying to give some meaningful answer, getting all philosophical about it.  Then I ask him.  He says, "Good buffet.  Cheap.  We come every year."   :thatsright:  Coup.

A pretty good day.  Different, but still just fine!

I had Thanksgiving dinner with a friend and her extended family. Her family was a riot. They laughed and joked and had a great time. Her brothers and sisters brought their families and the house was crowded with solid people.
But they all stood together, got quiet, and prayed before the meal.

I got to spoil kids, tell stories, and I laughed till my face hurt. I brought two pies and a dinosaur video for the kids.

and food, food, food! I took home a full pecan pie, tons of turkey and ham, and loads of goodies!
---wow---

(and pecan pie does make a good breakfast)

I hope you all has as much fun as I did tonight.
HAPPY THANKSGIVING! and God bless you all.

Home from another successful Thanksgiving.  My mom got a fresh turkey instead of a frozen one... what a huge difference it makes.  So juicy and delicious.  And there were Yorkshire pudding and plenty of gravy to be had.  It was excellent.  Fig pudding with caramel sauce for dessert.  So decadent and tasty.

My brother's dog finally got over the whole biting me thing.  Good boy.

I've watched more cheap reality TV in one night than I have in the last two years.  'Storage Wars'... what the hell are they thinking?

I'm astonished by all the goofy reality shit they actually spend money to produce. There's one about a crew of guys that go up onto cliffs, snag loose rocks and let 'em (allegedly) safely fall. Then there's another one about a few guys in a freakin' swamp somewhere rasslin' gators and getting bitten by water moccasins. WTF? That kinda shit's entertainment???

Swamp People.  It's pretty bad.

You'd think one show dedicated to storage auctions would be enough... there are three of them.
