EPA targets families that generate heat off the grid using traditional wood-burning stoves

(NaturalNews) Traditional wood-burning stoves are still one of the most cost-efficient, sustainable, and renewable sources of energy production that families can use to heat their homes. But the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is not a huge fan of them, as was evidenced by its recent decision to push those who use traditional models to convert to EPA-approved -- and oftentimes much more expensive -- alternative models.

Throughout history, civilizations have relied on the burning of wood to cook food, warm water, and heat places of dwelling. After all, trees are an abundant and renewable source of wood, which means that the costs associated with obtaining energy and heat from burning wood are minimal. This, of course, is why many cash-strapped folks today are turning to wood-burning stoves rather than their local utilities.

But the EPA is now expressing concern about the 80 percent-or-so of wood stove users that still rely on non-EPA approved models. Most of the wood stoves manufactured before 1990 do not contain the EPA's certification stamp of approval which, in the eyes of the agency, means they are an unnecessary contributor of excess environmental pollution.

Why the hell can't we just ban the damned EPA?

Haven't some cities already banned fireplaces and wood stoves?  I'd get one in a heart beat if I had room for one.

Yeah, they have. Wood burning fireplaces are altheboregore's target, too.

But am I worried? NO! Matter of fact, we're splitting some more firewood this weekend.  :-)

Lets see here, I have a choice to make. I can either drive an SUV around and warm the entire planet or cut, split, haul, stack, store, tote, burn and clean up after burning wood to heat just my house...hmmmmm.... "We'll see you dear, I'm going for a drive. I'll be back in a few months when it warms up."... :-)

"Put another log on the fire..."

Hey, pellet stoves are cheaper than they were and cheaper to run than wood stoves in many cases, but some people don't necessarily want/need/can afford to make the $2K investment in one.

Personally, if I could convert, I'd go with a coal burner and drive the EPA absolutely batshit insane.

The last place in my small town to sell coal finally went out of business. Well, Obama said he was going to put them out of business...and he did. OK so that's one promise he kept, at least on my local level.

That's more of a short putt than any kind of a drive.

Also, why does the EPA have their panties in a wad if all the new wood heaters are EPA approved? A wood heater will last about 20 years if used as a primary or sole source of heat. So it won't be long before they are all replaced with new, improved, EPA approved heater anyway, right?

Obama plan for government job creation and more scrap metal for China.

I would imagine EPA approved stoves would be stoves with catalytic twice burn tech to cut down on particulates? Other than that they don't have a leg to stand on. Wood is the only carbon neutral fuel on the planet. Every bit of co a wood fire puts into the atmosphere the growing tree already took out. That is the case weather I burn it or it falls down and rots on the forest floor. Particulates are the only pollution coming from a wood fire! So Honey put another log on the fire!

Oh, it gets even better.  Wood boilers are all but extinct anymore.  Anyone who has lived in New England knows what I'm talking about.

There a a lot of older homes around here who only have wood stoves for heat.  Mostly they are elderly couples or singles relying on it.  Some newer homes had large wood burners installed in basements attached to the duct work for whole house heating.  We use the originally installed 28 year old Osburn that's in the living room.  It'll heat most of the house.

If you don't have your own source of wood it can get pretty expensive.  A pickup load is going for $75 delivered.  I've only found one place that sells a true rick, no delivery.  We're doing okay since there's plenty still to cut on our property.

The EPA will have a hell of a time enforcing their garbage on areas like these.

Our niece and her hubby had a wood boiler that supplied all the hot water they needed, for all purposes including heat. They've moved from that house, which was way up in the Zoar Valley area of NYS.

In Chico, where I work, they constantly have burn day bans. Unless, of course, you have a NEW wood stove and then you are exempted. I live in a town 15 miles away (in the foothills), with NO bans on wood stoves. We did have to buy an EPA approved one (for a remodel we did in 2005) and the stove wasn't all that expensive, $750 (it's a Napoleon). I still don't see a difference (smoke) from my "approved" stove and neighbors units that are from the 1990's.

As far as wood cost, I have plenty of friends where I can get fire wood plus my wife scours Craigslist for free firewood. This year I cut, split, and stacked over 2 cords, none of which I had buy.
