Veterans days always make me feel weird.   Updated at 9:55 AM

Especially when someone says "Thank you for your service." You see, I was an infantryman in Vietnam, but I did not serve willingly. I was drafted, forced into a deadly form of involuntary servitude, and whatever illusions I might originally have had about the rightness of the war were quickly torn from me when I saw what we were doing to the innocent people, the sacred soils, the beautiful waters and jungles and mountains of that tormented land.

"No, don't thank me," I want to say. "Forgive me. Forgive me for participating in that awful event in your name. If you must thank me for something, then thank me for joining the movement to stop the war when I got home. Maybe thank me for the things I have tried to do for the castoffs of society--the mentally ill, the developmentally disabled, the emotionally damaged products of chaotic and abusive homes who have gone on to fill our jails and prisons. But don't thank me for going off to participate in the destruction of a foreign land whose residents never intended any harm to you or me."

Another DUmmy added to the "I'd slap the shit out of if I ever came face to face with" list.

Brand new campfire. Should bring out the haters.

He forgets that the whole war was dreamed up by über-liberal LBJ, who was just a wannabe FDR.

DUmmy Jackpine Radical is clearly one of those alcoholic potheads with a long, greasy, gray ponytail, and a ratty fatigue jacket with anti-war slogans all over it. It's a tossup if he was ever in the military, but a sure bet that he's a lifelong loser.

Sort of like John F'n Kerry without the gigolo career.

Posts like this is why I've included the Jackshit primitive in my Top 10 DU list over the past few years. He is a marathoner, not a sprinter, of lies and stupidity.

19. I appreciated it more when it was Armistice Day. Commemorating
 peace not war.
Yo, jackass, go educate yourself before posting something this stupid.

Well, it was once "Armistice Day," in commemoration of those from the first world war, but the primitive'd have to be pretty old, pretty ancient, to personally "remember" when it was Armistice Day.

Of course, and some like myself still call it that--blame my adolescent anglophilia--but it hasn't been called "Armistice Day" in America since, well, since Bess was with Harry in the White House.

Seems to me it was still called Armistice day in the 50s and 60s.

I think it switched over in the mid fifties.
Most older folks continued to refer to it as Armistice Day for quite some time.
Anybody remember when Memorial Day was called Decoration Day?

Just a thought.

Veterans days always make me feel weird.
Because being around your superiors really, really, enhances your inferiority complex.

Here's a brief history:

Armistice Day, a federal holiday, was established in 1926 to commemorate the signing in 1918 of the armistice ending World War I. On June 1, 1954, the name was changed to Veterans Day to honor all men and women who have served America in its armed forces.

Memorial Day, the old Decorations Day kinda changed with popular usage a couple of decades after 1868 to Memorial Day.

Well, I was almost right, being just one president off; it was when Mamie was with Ike in the White House that it changed.  Anyway, it was before my time, so I guess I can use youth as an excuse.

Quite alright sir.
The change over was started down south.
Nebraska should really consider securing it's border with Kansas. (They did it)

You know, sir, I've been watching the Veterans' Day festivities on Skins's island, and I don't know what to say.

Other than that the primitives are losers, but that goes without saying, so I won't bother.

I tried writing a special Veterans' Day piece for the illumination of the primitives, but gave it up.

The problem is, being a professional civilian, I'm not exactly sure how much I owe to those who served, and who are serving.

The only thing I'm aware of is that the debt to them's incalculable.

Saying "thank you" is w-a-a-a-a-y too little, and they're just words anyway.

I suppose this is similar with someone who goes bankrupt for a million dollars, and who has no way to pay even a small part of it back.

One can say "I'm sorry" to one's creditors, and really really really mean it with all one's heart and soul that one's sorry.  But being sorry doesn't do a damned thing for paying them back.

And ditto for saying "thank you" to those who served, and who are serving.  The gratitude, as God is my witness, may be sincere and heartful and fulsome, but it does nothing, nothing at all, to even begin making up for what such people gave, and are giving, us.

6. Thank you for speaking truth

I too hated that war. I did whatever I could to protest and stop it. Including joining a group of Quakers and taking a canoe into a bay to try stopping a nuclear destroyer ship from sailing to Vietnam.

I am thankful you got home.

It's not just the words, sir. As you so nicely pointed out, it's the thought behind those words.
I don't ever purport to speak for everyone, as that's a dangerous thing to do.
So, if you'll forgive me.
The honor was ours.  Thank you for caring.

Well, we didn't change the holiday's name just because some politicians did. I didn't start hearing "Veteran's Day" until late 60s, early 70s.

It still feels like saying "Happy Holidays".

The eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month should memorialize the millions who died in that inconceivably awful conflict.

Another day should be designated as a generic veteran's holiday. Let it take the place of the meaningless "President's Day" holiday.
