This "we are Penn State" is about the stupidest cheer one can imagine; one might as well be chanting "we are bullies, thugs, sore losers, sore winners, sorry-assed punks."
It's just really stupid.
I attended a Penn State game there once in my life, sometime in the early 1980s; their opponent was some small eastern college, and was getting pounded something like 69-0.
I was eyewitness to one of the most-despicable sights I've ever seen in my life, the Penn State "fans" booing and cat-calling and jeering at their already-humbled opponent.
No class, Penn State "fans;" assholes, all of them.

12. Theo Fleury was just on ESPN talking about what his coach (Graham James) took away from him as a child, when he was molested. The fact that people don't seem to figure the children whose lives are destroyed into consideration is sickening.

Um...JoPa did nothing wrong legally, Rockhead. Now morally? I'm not sure. He could have, and maybe should have done more, but to throw him under the bus? Really? If you're going to do that to Paterno, they should do that to EVERYONE INVOLVED! Really, McSicko is still not sans job, yet? What kind of justice is that?

Really, I never heard that McDouchebag was ever canned. I'm trying to look that up to confirm, but I think I'll just watch ESPN. They've got it going on for updates pretty much non-stop.

I am not a Penn State fan; far from it really. But in 2008 I went to a game there with a friend and tailgated in the parking area adjacent to the football field. Being a Southerner, I expect the fans there to be cold and calloused "Nothererners," but instead found them to be very friendly and welcoming. The stadium of 110,000 was really loud (game was against Illinois), and the crowd truly got into it. When they say "We are Penn State," hearing it on TV is no comparison to how loud it is in person. I'd go back to a game there.
Granted, I've never been to a college football atmosphere like the one at Texas A&M, which is incredible, but it wasn't anything like you described.

I'm sure it depends upon who they're playing, how the game's going, the weather, whatnot.
If it's on television, and if you get a chance, watch at least a little bit of the Nebraska-Penn State game this weekend. I can pretty much guarantee you'll see Penn State "fans" at their best--or rather, their worst. Something about Nebraska has always gotten their goat.
It was no surprise to me earlier today to read that the University of Nebraska Board of Regents are asking law-enforcement to take special measures to protect the Nebraska team and fans this weekend.
I don't believe such a request was ever necessary in all the history of Nebraska football, although Colorado came close, circa the mid-1980s up until recently. Even our most highly-charged games against Missouri never came to this.
And there's the personal experience, too. I have 18 cousins near or at my own age, cousins I've known and hung around with since childhood, cousins I spent holidays with, all of them graduates of Penn State. I'm the only one from a college not Penn State. And I happen to be.....
They're my cousins, and I love them dearly, but they're always sore. Win or lose, they're always sore.

Myself being of college age, I hung with the college crowds.
And now we have this:
Police warn Penn State students ahead of home game
Penn State University students were warned by local police not to take to the streets on Saturday at the football team's final home game to protest the sacking of legendary coach Joe Paterno amid a sexual abuse scandal.
State College Police Department Captain John Gardner said he plans to have every officer working at the game against Nebraska, where some fear students may protest the ouster of Paterno after 46 years in charge of the team.
"It you truly support Coach Joe or Penn State, this is not the way," Gardner told a news conference. "Stay off the street. The behavior of last night will not be tolerated."
Chanting "Hell no, Joe won't go" and "We want Joe back," thousands of students took to the streets overnight to protest the decision, overturning a television van during a demonstration which some police dispersed using pepper spray.
Gardner said more than a dozen people were arrested when as many as 5,000 students protested on Wednesday evening in what he said degenerated into a "riotous mob."
Pennsylvania State Police and the university police force will assist the town's police on Saturday, Gardner said.

This is not going to end well.
The scandal currently rocking the campus, and that special detestation and loathing of Nebraska, that Penn State "fans" have.
I always thought that a team should have to forfeit a game if its fans indulge in such poor sportsmanship.
Fans of Wisconsin, Ohio State, Minnesota, Michigan State, and Northwestern, according to anecdotal reports in the newspapers, from Nebraska fans who were at the same games, have been nothing but class acts, stellar in good manners. These are the sorts of teams with which Nebraska is familiar, as in the old Big 8 and Big 12 (Colorado excepted), fans who understand common courtesy.
Nobody's going to ever top Oklahoma when it comes to class fans, but the consensus here seems to be that Wisconsin comes closest.

That must be a first. I've never heard of a case where an collegiate athletic department has asked its fans to avoid wearing their school colors.
Even in Ohio Stadium, Michigan fans can safely wear their repulsive mustard-colored clothing.
