'German Reasoning Won Out' in Stem Cell Ruling
from Der Spiegel:
The European Court of Justice on Tuesday ruled that research using embryonic stem cells, in which the embryos are destroyed, cannot be patented. In Germany, where the research that prompted the original lawsuit was based, editorialists are mixed in their views of the ruling.
On Tuesday, the European Court of Justice issued a landmark ruling denying patent rights for stem cell research from embryos if they are destroyed in the process.
The case involved a method devised by Oliver Brüstle of Germany's University of Bonn for turning human embryonic stem cells into nerve cells. Brüstle filed a patent for the technique in 1997, which was then challenged by Greenpeace.
In its ruling, the European Court of Justice allowed for patents on the use of human embryos for therapeutic and diagnostic purposes applied to the embryos themselves, but not on their use for scientific research. .............(more)

Get rid of any patents pertaining to stem cells and most if not all research will suddenly evaporate.

Hypocrites. The only science they support is the science of abortion.
Which party just ended NASA shuttle program and isn't funding anything to replace it?
-
There is research showing promising use of adult stem cells, causing no harm to the host when harvested. Not good enough for the DUmmies.
Slaughter of human babies = the devil laughs.
-
But isn't it amazing that Greenpeace filed the lawsuit.
This should place their loyalties in a peculiar light.

That's not true.
They also support:
1. Research into discovering the existence of a "Gay gene."
2. Research studying the effects of sex on prepubescent children.
3. Eugenics.

I condemn the policy of simply creating human embroys only for the purpose of harvesting stem cells.
Why?
There are abundent sources of stem cells already availible; adult and umbilical cords (which are usually thrown in the trash). And neither of these require the expensive lab conditions to create embroys.
I think of creating a human embroy only to destroy it as murder of a human being.

To understand the context of this, it would be helpful to know that the entire matter of genetic research and manipulation is a MUCH hotter issue in Europe than it is here, in fact the relative importance of that issue vs. abortion is almost the reverse of what it is here.

I guess they're still kinda sensitive to that whole Josef Mengele thing, huh?

It's a small part of it, but it's not just in or out of Germany and there is a whole lot more to it than that.

May I kill some 40 year old 200+ pound embryos for their stem cells?
Hey, if they haven't moved out of mom's basement and aren't being productive by age 40, we ought to get "some" use out of 'em.

That "adult baby" seems like a candidate for a 120-something trimester abortion . . . :fuelfire:

Don't forget the $900,000 taxpayer-funded study on gay penises.
