Robert Downey Jr. urged the crowd at the American Cinematheque award ceremony to forgive the embattled actor and move past the ugliness that has plagued his personal life and career in recent years. I’ve taken flack for defending Mel Gibson in the past so it’s nice to see Downey Jr. come to his defense.
Recalling when Gibson had helped him out in the past, Downey Jr. stepped out of the spotlight at his own award ceremony and said, “When I couldn’t get sober, he told me not to give up hope and encouraged me to find my faith. It didn’t have to be his or anyone else’s as long as it was rooted in forgiveness. And I couldn’t get hired, so he cast me in the lead of a movie that was actually developed for him. He kept a roof over my head and food on the table and most importantly he said if I accepted responsibility for my wrongdoing and embraced that part of my soul that was ugly – hugging the cactus he calls it — he said that if I hugged the cactus long enough, I’d become a man.â€
Downey continued, “I did and it worked. All he asked in return was that someday I help the next guy in some small way. It’s reasonable to assume at the time he didn’t imagine the next guy would be him or that someday was tonight. So anyway on this special occasion and in light of the recent holidays including Columbus Day, I would ask that you join me, unless you are completely without sin in which case you picked the wrong f—ing industry, in forgiving my friend his trespasses and offering him the same clean slate you have me, allowing him to continue his great and ongoing contribution to our collective art without shame. He’s hugged the cactus long enough.â€

Thoughts?
Does Mel deserve forgiveness?

Oh my! What has Mel done this time?
-
I dunno what he has done or not done recently, but I really am proud of Robert Downey Jr.

Agreed. I suspect this may be referring to Hollywood's lack of forgiveness over previous events.
-
I'm all for redemption, but I don't know if Mel has actually taken ownership of his wrongs and 'Hugged the cactus,' or if he's just been smart enough to STFU for awhile knowing he screwed the pooch but not really taking responsibility for it either.
-
I love his movies :shucks:

Cerainly agree with that, he has made some truly great films in his career.

..."I, the Lord, will forgive whom I will forgive, but of you it is required to forgive all men.
..."For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again."
It's not my place to stand in judgement of Mel. I may be a little leary if he's asking for names and addresses of all my Jewish friends, but we've ALL said and done some incredibly stupid things in our own pasts, and if I expect the Lord to overlook my own tendency toward foot in mouth syndrome, then I have to be at least as forgiving of the foot in mouth problems of others.

Well, as I recall, Gibson's had at least one DWI and, in the course of that incident or shortly thereafter, made some anti-Semitic statements.
Not too long after that, he issued this statement:
"After drinking alcohol on Thursday night, I did a number of things that were very wrong and for which I am ashamed. I drove a car when I should not have, and was stopped by the LA County Sheriffs. The arresting officer was just doing his job and I feel fortunate that I was apprehended before I caused injury to any other person. I acted like a person completely out of control when I was arrested, and said things that I do not believe to be true and which are despicable. I am deeply ashamed of everything I said. Also, I take this opportunity to apologize to the deputies involved for my belligerent behavior. They have always been there for me in my community and indeed probably saved me from myself. I disgraced myself and my family with my behavior and for that I am truly sorry. I have battled with the disease of alcoholism for all of my adult life and profoundly regret my horrific relapse. I apologize for any behavior unbecoming of me in my inebriated state and have already taken necessary steps to ensure my return to health."
One could assert he was just giving lip service to the issue, but then again, it may not be. He really might have "hugged the cactus" since then.

I just can't stay mad at that guy.

Yeah, but his epic telephonic meltdown afterwards on Oxana whats-'er-name indicated he doesn't really have things really under control and has a ton of work yet to do, though the press release was a step in the right direction.

Uh....Yeah. I felt bad just listening to that.

I hadn't heard that, but that's okay. I don't need to hear the meltdown rant to understand he probably relapsed again (if he ever quit).
Mel's problem is he can't stay in a relationship which, surprisingly enough, is probably aggravated by the booze. Every once in awhile he gives away his house, half his stuff, and a shitload of money because another wife/girlfriend/SO/mail order bride decides she can't change him.
They do that, you know. They think they can "change him." Which is patently absurd, but they don't know it and Mel ain't bright enough to figure that out.

it was once about marriage "she gets married thinking she can change him, he gets married thinking she'll never change"

WHAT?!?!? How can this be!?!

I am with Gina, I love his movies. Braveheart is my ultimate fave, and the Patriot is 2nd. Lethal Weapon series, spectactular!!! When he is serious about the role he is playing, he is a damned good actor!!!
The man without a face(I think that is what it is called) was good too...
-
The Godless commies of Hollywood could probably forgive Mel for the anti-semitic remarks but not for making The Passion of the Christ.
-
Love Mel and think he makes great films. I also think he's a tortured soul who has an anger mgmt problem inflamed by alcohol. But like someone said upthread, it's not for me to ultimately forgive him; that's between him and God.

Hey that's every Bimbo's retirement plan. Eat little, exercise lots, get breast implants, bleach hair, marry rich and famous guy, buy lots of jewels, gold, furs, cars, keep him drunk while spending half his fortune, then divorce him on grounds of habitual drunkenness getting half of what's left.
I think that's a graduate course in wymins studies.

We could probably list numerous celeberties that have done things that should have gotten them what they deserve. Anyone else here remember Alec Baldwin and his phone call to his kid? What about Lindsy Mohammed and her antics? Then there is the Dixie Chicks and they got a pass from Hollywood too.
I can forgive Mel far easier then I can most of Hollywoods big names.

I am too, Tots! He has always been a favorite of mine--Restoration is one of my all time favorite movies. I was so pleased when he got himself back on track and returned to the talent God gave him.
Knowing that came from Gibson before his current woes, I'd say it's time for someone like Downey who has been touched by him to make changes to now reach out and tell him to find 'that' man who said those words again. He's lost his way, that is evident. As someone who was quite devout at one time, I can't help but wonder if he succumbed to spiritual attacks. It's time for him to get right and push those demons: earthly and otherwise aside and right the wrongs. JMO though.

didn't hollyweird forgive Roman Polanski? if so I think screwing a 13 yr old girl is alot worse than some words

Polanski has a new movie coming out with several big name stars. Carnage (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1692486/)

Not that there is anything wrong with it, but there are a lot more Jewish guys in important positions in the film industry and media than there are 13-year-old girls, so there is kind of an 'Exactly whose ox is getting gored' aspect to the difference in the way they have been treated.

so anti-semitism is worse than screwing a 13yr old girl?

Apparently so, in Hollyweird.

What Dixiebelle said, those are my thoughts too.
If Hollywood has a problem with anti-semites, they should take a hard look at the OWS crowd. For that matter, lefties in general. Jewish people need to open their eyes to who they've gotten into bed with. You know, they're not even hiding it anymore. At some point, it won't be a bannable offense at the DUmp.

They don't seem to be exactly big on banning it now, seems like mostly it just gets shoved off to the I-P dungeon.

Must be a genetic deformity of the brain....Karl Marx syndrome, you know.

Few deserve forgiveness. I suppose if you deserved it then it wouldn't be forgiveness, it would be something that you were owed. To forgive him and others for their trespasses is a good thing to do. A lot of people have forgiven me over the years and I most certainly didn't deserve it. Christ forgave me of my sins and I know that I don't deserve that...
Funny what a little forgiveness can do in the human heart.
