Obama pulls plug on troubled long-term care program in new health law, citing design flaws

The Obama administration says it is unable to go forward with a major program in the president’s signature health care overhaul law — a new long-term care insurance plan.
Officials said Friday the long-term care program has critical design flaws that can’t be fixed to make it financially self-sustaining.
Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius told Congress in a letter that she does not see a viable path forward at this time. By law, implementation of the program was contingent on Sebelius certifying it financially sound.

So I guess they are finally getting around to finding out what's in the bill, now that it has been passed and what they are finding out is that it is the steaming turd we all knew it was.

But...But...But it has a clean end somewhere and when they find it, they swear you'll be rquired to pick it up by that end.
-
Unfortunately, it's only a small part of the entire bill. There are still 1,999 pages left.
A longstanding priority of the late Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, D-Mass., the Community Living Assistance Services and Supports program, or CLASS, was spliced into the health care law despite nagging budget worries.

Did the CBO factor in that liberals will encourage euthanasia and that "long-term" is only about 3 weeks for patients in liberal care? None of the old folks will have had PSA tests or mamograms (thanks to liberals), so it's not like they'll live that long.

"Critical design flaws?"
Well, DOH!!!!!
:cantseeshit:

That was yet another $86 billion in funding that went poof. And I read this morning that they have crapped out on the income they expected to come from the tanning bed tax. These people are fools, and the 2012 ads for the Republicans are writing themselves.
-
How could there be design flaws in something nobody read? Unpossible!

I guess San Fran Nan was right--now we're finding out what's in it.
Hell, even HER seat might be in play by the time this shit all unfolds.
-
Unfortunately, as I understand it, this is an isolated part of the package that had a specific requirement attached to it requiring a detailed analysis of its financial viability prior to going forward, something the other even-costlier provisions don't.

They should have called it the beer-and-travel-money amendment.

I assume that you mean her position in congress. I doubt anyone would want her seat.

Heard an interesting twist on this, more of an implication in another story than even direct coverage, but it was mentioned by a commentator that cancellation of this program does not reflect on merely its own fiscal impossibility, but takes away some of the projected revenue (Cough) or savings (Cough-cough) which was counted in elsewhere in the Hell Care law for viability of the whole thing.

Well, that looks like that's all Barry needs to plead "present" for the debacle that is his health care "plan."

It wasn't cancelled, it was just put on a back burner.
