Title: Tis the Season. Zombies. What would YOU do?
Post by: Mr Mannn on October 11, 2011, 06:01:39 PM
OK, here is the scenario.
The time is now. There has been a major zombie attack. National sources of news have been silenced. TV is dead. Nothing on the radio.

You are in good health (play along if you are not). You, your friends and loved ones are all together, but you're outa food. Its time to move to a safer haven, and scavenge for enough food to wait out winter.

1) it looks the govt has collapsed. No help is coming. You are on your own.
2) the roads are clogged, impassible. You're not driving out.
3) Its October but the weather is still warm enough to travel.
4) scouts in your party have reported a huge concentration of zombies moving your way. They'll be here in less that two days.
5) you are well provisioned with guns n' ammo. Just not food.
6) everyone is looking to YOU to decide:

Where are you now? And where will you go to survive?

well i would use all my knowledge ive gathered watching movies.

day of the dead
shaun of the dead
walking dead
Red Dawn (not about zombies but still about survival)
jerico
falling skies
etc

basically gather as many firearms and ammo and find a good holdout, then smartly scout and scavage

or

maybe start a mexican drug cartel to get obama guns!

I'm going to assume "facts" not in evidence, since you didn't say anything about where the zombie horde is coming from, and assume that they're coming from the nearest population center (the local city)...

In which case my actions are the same as if the city center is consumed with rioters, who have consumed all the resources they had and have begun raiding stores and homes outside their own milieux, and my van is inoperable or impractical for security reasons...

I pick up my ruck and my rifle, hand my wife her much smaller backpack, and move out roughly SSE along secondary roads, staying 50m inside the treeline whenever practicable; get five miles out and hole up until nightfall, and then move by night with noise and light discipline, checking out unfamiliar noises with my civvie IR goggles (while wishing for the AN/PVS-7s* I had during Gulf War I).  First good hide location is a bit more than 20 miles out thataway.

*I may have the nomenclature wrong.  Gimme a break, it's been 20 years.

Pack up the 4 wheeler and head for my hunting cabin deep in the woods. I would never find myself "out of food" So that's out of the scenario.

Are they "Dawn of the Living Dead" type zombies, or "28 Days Later" type zombies?  For the former, I'd just start jogging in the opposite direction...after all, they were really slow and stupid.  For the latter, I'd probably just die of fright, so problem solved.

I am headed out of town, to my buddy's house.  My buddy has a plane.   :-)

I have thought this through a LOT.  I would go with one of two options.  First option would be to make camp on a bridge.  Barricading both ends of a bridge wouldn't be very hard.  You need a pretty long bridge so the smell of the undead doesn't ruin your day every day.  My assertion is that zombies would float in water and be swept downstream.  You could have boats by the bridge pylons to make quick runs to other areas for supplies.  You could even use a barge filled with dirt as a floating garden to feed your survivors.  Fish most likely wouldn't be affected by the virus so you could have all of the fish you could catch to eat.  Since the bridge would be fire proof you could burn on it at all times.  You would have a great spot to fend off raiders too.  There are only three ways in.  Eventually decomposition will off even the most hardy zombie.

Other option would be 4wheelers and head for the hills.  Tree houses and luck.

Get to high ground and start building circular defense perimeters with rugged/speedy vehicles fully gassed within the perimeters arraigned in triangular fashion with gunmounts upon them. Lots of sandbags set up too. Natural defenses (ravines, rivers, etc. would be beneficial too). OK has a lot of open shooting lanes. Acquiring night vision capabilities would be a first priority. Scouting military bases for inactivity for such weaponry would be a long-term goal.

i agree
the type of zombies are the most crucial piece of info needed to design my survival plan.

and if its a contagious airborne virus thing, i too would just die of fright!

Concertina wire will slow down even the most high-speed zombies.

Head shots, lots and lots of head shots.

Head shots, lots and lots of head shots.

Most zombies I've "encountered", aren't great swimmers.  I'd just park my boat in the middle of the lake (literally next door from me) and take head shots at those on the beach.  Let my boy get in some good fishing while we're at it.

Of course, if we were on Planet Terror, I'd have to side up with my good friend Cherry Darling.

I would head down to the local theater and set up the scenes from times square election night '08 playing in continuous loop and be sure to leave the doors propped open. Trails of Cheetos leading to the theater may help guide the zombies in.
Once the place is packed with a drooling moaning hoard mesmerized with the views of the crowds of their brethren cheering the victory of THE ONE on the screen I would barricade them in and set fire to the place.

I have three levels of bugout:

1-- Fast/Heavy: Stuff I can throw in a car and GTFO of town ("Oh crap, the city is on fire");

2-- Slow/Heavy: Stuff I can carry at a trudge, includes some comfort items  ("Oh h3!!, the car's broke down");

3--Fast(ish)/Light: Basic stuff that will keep us reasonably warm, dry, and clean(ish), though we'd have to forage for anything more than emergency rations ("OH F### RUN!").
