Bank On It: They're Scared
By William Rivers Pitt
t r u t h o u t | Op-Ed

Far be it from me to accuse Gandhi of missing a note, but in the case of the 'Occupy Wall Street' protests, the Mahatma's famous quote appears to be lacking a few essential words. "First they ignore you," he said, "then they ridicule you, then they fight you, then you win."
That's not quite correct.
Certainly, the OWS protests began with a great whistling silence from the "mainstream" news media. It is only because of the resources available to the average person in this marvelous technological age we live in that word of the protest ever reached beyond its original location.
Thanks to cell phones, video cameras, digital recorders, and of course, the internet - all wielded by patriot citizens - reports, images and video of the protest began to dribble out via Twitter, Facebook and a variety of blogs and alternative news media sites like Truthout. But from the "mainstream" news, there was nothing, and nothing, and nothing.
Eventually, however, the OWS protest broke through the "mainstream" news blackout, thanks in no small part to commentators like Lawrence O'Donnell, Rachel Maddow and Keith Olbermann. Once the "mainstream" news outlets finally deigned to lower themselves to report on the rabble down on Wall Street, their tone and tenor fairly oozed contempt. The New York Times, bastion of the status quo, published an article describing each and every participant of the OWS protest as a moonbeam-riding fuzzbrain, someone reeking of patchouli who couldn't string a coherent thought together if their life depended on it...which was followed up immediately by a barrage of reports defending cops who hosed down defenseless women penned in behind nylon barriers with pepper spray, because those cops were doing exactly, precisely the right thing. Or something.
This, as usual, from the same "mainstream" news media that didn't have any problem with the gun-toting "patriots" of the Tea Party and their catastrophically-spelled signs. Well, then again, the Tea Party has corporate sponsorship, while the OWS protesters are doing this on their own. It pays - literally - to have friends in high places.
Similar disdain was heaped upon the OWS protest from every corner of the "mainstream" news realm, most especially from Fox News and the long reach of conservative talk radio. These protesters are bums, hippies, losers, anarchists, idiots, communists and fools, a drumbeat which has continued to this very day.
So.
First they ignore you: check.
Then they ridicule you: check.
According to Gandhi, the next step comes when they fight you, but here is the spot where his marvelous wisdom could use a bit of enhancement.
First they ignore you, then they ridicule you...
Then they get scared.
And they are scared, now. You can smell it. The criticism being leveled at the OWS movement has gotten far harsher in the last several days. Presidential candidate Mitt Romney recently deployed the old chestnut about "class warfare" to describe the protest. Rep. Eric Cantor doubled down on Romney's rhetoric with some of his own: "If you read the newspapers today, I for one am increasingly concerned about the growing mobs occupying Wall Street and the other cities across the country. Believe it or not, some in this town have actually condoned the pitting of Americans against Americans."
That's pretty rich right there, don't you think? Fellows like Cantor have made turning American against American their bread and butter for the last ten years..."You're with us or against us"...but I digress.
Fact: OWS has bloomed in more than a dozen major cities all across the country. It stopped being a protest a while ago. It's a movement now.
And they're scared.
Know how I know? I know because a friend in San Francisco took the time to transcribe a document he was given by the major bank he works for. The document, titled "Protest Safety Handbook," explains what a bank employee should do when confronted with the horror and terror of an OWS protest.
I am leaving the name of the bank out of this to protect my friend. Some tidbits:
The movement in New York has begun to publish a four page news paper titled "The Occupied Wall Street Journal." The current edition of the published document loosely outlines the group's manifesto and intentions. The group has indicated that they have been inspired by the results from similar groups involved in the "Arab Spring" in the Middle East. The group's publication cites an intention to first to protest and then to march, escalating to civil disobedience when necessary.
These types of groups are reaching out to the disengaged and disenfranchised population of the United States for members, often encouraging the unemployed and homeless to join the movement. Often these marches and protests are unplanned and result from instant notification on "Social Networks" that produce "Flash Protest Mobs" in a matter of minutes. While this group has not yet resorted to violence the possibility exists that they can.
Safety Tips:
- Avoid poorly lit areas and isolated locations that may make you vulnerable to an attack.
- Keep the cars doors locked while driving in the area of a mob or protest march.
- Project an image of confidence and strength. Walk with a purpose and avoid hesitation, keep your head up, shoulders back and make eye contact with people you pass.
- Avoid confrontation and unnecessary contact with protesters.
- Avoid walking or driving alone. There is safety in numbers.
- Carry purses close to the body.
- Wallets and cash are best kept in a front pocket.
- Avoid wearing Bank ID or logo items outside the bank if possible.
- Keep your cell phone charged and close at hand.
- Have emergency contact information pre-programmed into your phone.
- Have your keys out and ready before you need them.
- If you feel that you're in danger or if you observe suspicious or illegal activities, call the police or dial 911.
- If confronted or attacked, try to remain calm and cooperate by following the attacker's instructions.
- Do not attempt to reason or argue with the protesters.
- Cooperate and do not risk your personal safety.
- Be a good witness and try to remember as many details of what occurred as you can.
(Emphasis added)
Makes it sound like you're walking through a war zone, right? Not a peaceful protest, but some actively dangerous Thunderdome where instant and horrible death might reach out at any time to cut you down.
The financial powers-that-be are desperate to paint this peaceful, meaningful movement as some kind of civilization-annihilating upheaval, populated by rogues, pickpockets, mobs and murderers. They need the OWS protest to be seen this way by the general public, so they can discredit it and destroy it. Fear-mongering is an old, old tactic, and they are deploying it once again.
Note well: the bank that distributed this hyper-paranoid ball of gibberish is an entire continent away from the nexus of the OWS movement in New York City.
I guess San Francisco's OWS chapter has been making some noise. Same with Boston, and DC, and a dozen other cities.
First they ignore you.
Then they ridicule you.
Then they get scared.
Then they fight you.
Then you win.
I don't think the Mahatma would mind this small edition to his statement. It fits.
And it's true. They are scared.
You can smell it.

The only fear we have of the clOWnS is the violence that they will inflict on innocent people. After that though the decent and civilized people in law enforcement will shut this nonsense down.

Projection, pure projection. I think Wee Willie would be scared if the Tea Party had done what the filthy, dirty, freestuffers had done.
-
Wee Willie said, "Once the "mainstream" news outlets finally deigned to lower themselves to report on the rabble down on Wall Street, their tone and tenor fairly oozed contempt. "....and I saw that contempt on TV this morning. It was a liberal news person lamenting the fact that the extreme left only comprises a small percentage of the vote in this country....and he was lamenting the fact that this OWS thing with it's open display of Marxism can only hurt the democrats chances at election time. :lmao:
Long live the OWS demonstrations..... :-)

Freestuffers. That's good, and it will be repeated.

Pitt actually was ignorant and stupid enough to say "Bank on it"?

Well, now we know where Pitt has been going to get his readings on current Conservative thought.
:whatever:
-
How the mighty have fallen huh Will? You're so irrelevant its not funny.
Yeah.
He's already a laughingstock among even his fellow DUmmies for the infamous "24 business hours" incident, and became even more so after bragging to anyone who would listen about Michael Moore quoting Pitt in his annual Christmas rant, only to have it be revealed that the quote in question was one that Pitt had in fact plagiarized from a Douglas Adams novel. I guess Pitt figures he might gain back something vaguely resembling respect from the DUmmies by pandering to them, especially those actually participating in OWS. "OOh, you guys are REALLY big heroes! Everyone in America may be mocking you, but that's REALLY because they all must be scared of you!" At least he credited Gandhi for the quote, though, and didn't plagiarize it like he did the Adams quote.
btw, regarding the quote and Pitt's addition to it, that could all just as easily apply to the Left's reaction to the Tea Party movement:
First, they ignore you ("Oh, they're just bitter old white losers angry over a black man in the White House, this'll all be forgotten in two weeks!").
Then, they ridicule you ("Teabaggers!" "Rednecks!").
Then, as Pitt said, they get scared ("Dangerous right wing extremists!" "Violent, hate- filled rhetoric!" "Cross- Hairs!").
Then, they fight you (Already started a bit, such as the beating of Kenneth Gladney).
Then, you win (Also already started a bit, though the 2010 election results).

17. Nice post ---
however, I think they are always scared --
they understand better than we do how much they need control over population --
how much they need to have government working for them -- how much protection
they always require. How much filth and dirt they have to keep hidden everyday.
How much violence they have used to get where they are. How many crimes they've
committed and how desperately they need to keep their cover up's going!
And their Goebbels' style press is an essential part of it.
They have a large tool box for solving their problems -- Violence is #1 --
Talk about projection.
Lemme ask you DUmmies something, if the Tea Party is so damn violent, then why is it there are no arrests, yet every time there is a moonbat jamboree there are arrests?
-

...and Jesse Ventura. That's one pack of fruitcakes right there.

If I were the DUmmies, I would want Pitt forever banned from using the phrase, "Bank on it" again. It's like the Kiss Of Death for any moonbat endeavor.
-

If I were the primitives, I'd want the Bostonian Drunkard forever banned from using every single word including "the" and "a" and "of" and "and" and &c., &c., &c., because no matter what words he uses, it's the kiss of death.
Usually death by boredom, but on his predictions, well, can anyone remember when the Bostonian Drunkard prophesized something, and it actually came true?
The guy's a worthless sack of shit.
-
You know, sir, something just struck me.
As recently as a year ago, I would've never used those particular words to describe the Bostonian Drunkard, even though they've been my honest sentiments for years.
After all, being a decent and civilized person, a good Catholic boy who in real life is a model, a paragon, of courtesy and good manners, it's not my style to use such language, such descriptions.
I'll never forget what a shock it was, back in 2006, when franksolich first said "damn" on the internet, at our old home. It caused quite a bit of surprise and even discombobulation, that I showed a potty-mouth.
But I can't help myself; these are primitives, blood-curdling, ugly, cruel, savage, violent, philistinic barbarians.
As you know, the American and British military since time immemorial has managed to remain decent and civilized even when up against the most indecent and uncivilized of foes; savages who play dirty.
I've never acquired that trick myself; when dealing with such beings, it's just easier for me to get down into the gutter and mimic their style, even if it makes franksolich look almost as bad as they do.
-

There is a vast gulf of difference between a few bank employees growing nervous over having to push through a gaggle of smelly n'er-do-wells to get to work and the bankers themselves being "scared" of your piddling marxist tantrums having any effect on their business.
But you know that, don't you Will? This is just a little red meat for your adoring sycophants at DU.
BTW, shouldn't you be writing something other than message board posts and yelps from the wilderness on that shitty little site you haunt? What's it called again? FreakOut? BurnedOut? OutOfTheCloset? Some shit. NYC Bestselling pamphleteers are expected to be prolific and turn out more bestselling prose. Or are you emulating Joseph Heller and Catch 22 and waiting fourteen years to write a second novel?
That's quite a dramatic pause.

Obstinence and willful ignorance coupled with arrogance is enough to try any man, Frank. We all need to vent.

Usually death by boredom, but on his predictions, well, can anyone remember when the Bostonian Drunkard prophesized something, and it actually came true?
Well, he predicted the siege by the Ditch Witch at W's ranch gate would bring down the Bushitler regime.
He even put on his Midnight Cowboy costume (someone should post that photo all Pitt threads), travelled to Texas, and sat on a fire ant nest.
Things didn't work out.
-
Will, I know you've been seriously handicapped since Karl Rove wasn't indicted but just for one sec, think! This would NOT come out of a corporation. They would simply provide a bullet point list that would be easy to remember. NO company, I don't care what business they're in is going give a "safety tip" sheet like this!
They would include NO history lesson Even if they did, the rest of the world isn't connecting this "occupy" crap to the Arab Spring. You guys are the only ones doing that. Why would they even know about OR mention some 4 page publication? These are safety tips! Why would they want to cloud their message with stuff that has absolutely NO bearing on being safe. Besides these banks aren't the least bit interested with your manifesto (and if they thought it germane they would've included it in this DUmmie created UNprofessional mini short story). They're worried about keeping their employees safe not about who's joining, who's disenchanted, or anything else. Again...this is about safety NOT history, sociology or psychology.
And it's extremely poorly written. There isn't a secretary anywhere in a company like a bank (no matter what department) that would let this off her desk!
But let's say, for whatever reason, a bank DID write this (if so I'd like to know because if it's mine I want to find a new one...damned if I'll bank at a place that puts out this drivel), lets look at the safety tips.
- Avoid poorly lit areas and isolated locations that may make you vulnerable to an attack.
This is practical advice in general, especially in a big city but what does it have to do with dealing with a mob? In SF most people who drive to work park their car in a lot. The majority of them have attendants or security guards. None of them are free. However, a bank would most likely have a parking lot and the employees would only have to walk out the door and walk to the car. No flash mobs. Banks tend to get a little nervous about that kind of thing and would call the police. Even without flash mobs or stinky protesters if someone feels uneasy walking to their car IN THE PARKING LOT a security guard will be happy to accompany them. At a bank they're armed.
- Keep the cars doors locked while driving in the area of a mob or protest march.
Most people would tend to do this anyway in a large cities. My truck locks automatically once I get to a certain speed (like 10 miles an hour or something). And why wouldn't they just tell their employees to avoid certain areas? Not because of fear or violence just because they probably couldn't drive thru the unwashed masses and the trash these "earth lovers" leave everywhere & police barricades? The police won't let cars through anyway.
But most likely they'd provide an alternate route. Since most of these employees are the actual working people you're supposedly fighting for, their employer would want to help them avoid the inconvenience of trying to navigate through people crapping on police cars, waving signs, and throwing trash around. Now, when the unions get there with their thugs, that would be the time they'd warn about the danger.
- Project an image of confidence and strength. Walk with a purpose and avoid hesitation, keep your head up, shoulders back and make eye contact with people you pass.
Again, these are general safety instructions. I've heard them before. Of course one might ask why one would even need them when this "Trash & Stink Up Part of the City Insuring the 'Working Class' Can't Get to their Jobs Occupation" are supposed to be marching FOR workers (a special gift from the unemployed to the taxpayers who fund them, I guess). Still, I would think an employer would provide them with alternate routes should they want to walk around outside.
- Avoid confrontation and unnecessary contact with protesters.
Again, there's no reason employees would be here. Not out of fear but because they wouldn't want to deal with the people, the smell & the mess when all one has to do is walk down a different block.
- Avoid walking or driving alone. There is safety in numbers.
If I'm driving, I would know there is no way I could drive through this crowd, through police barriers & through large trash piles that contain things like mattresses. Anyone who lives and/or works in a large city would know the neighborhoods and circumstances where they shouldn't be walking alone. Still, the most useful information I could give my employees would be alternate routes to avoid these people. One whiff of the "aroma" and the workers would probably turn around anyway.
- Carry purses close to the body.
Yeah, especially in SF. I've known people who've gotten mugged. One was a man with a wallet in his pocket. Doesn't get more "close to the body" than that. But if these working class people have to worry about you mugging them, then maybe it's time to rethink the message.
- Wallets and cash are best kept in a front pocket.
See above. But, if I'm carrying my wallet in a front pocket about all they'd get out of my purse, would be my hairbrush, make-up, a pad of paper, a couple of pens, some hand sanitizer (okay this I would need) and maybe the change I threw in the bottom. And shouldn't they be warning employees to do the same with my cell phone since later you're going to tell me to keep contact information there?
- Avoid wearing Bank ID or logo items outside the bank if possible.
Aren't these people walking down alternate streets? In SF, even in the dog days of summer for everyone else, you usually have to wear a sweater (it's damn cold by the bay) which one would think you could hide the ID inside of. But okay, I'll give you this one.
- Keep your cell phone charged and close at hand.
Would someone leave their house with an uncharged cell phone, especially if they don't have a car charger. There are myriad reasons one would need a cell phone aside from calling 911 (which may or may not be necessary because the police are there minding the crowds & arresting some of the idiots who think this is a cool way to bring attention to the American people). It does. We don't take you seriously because instead of peacefully holding your signs and chanting some slogan as the Tea Party people do, you're acting like spoiled brats. It's a turn off because the message is overridden by the stupidity. We wonder if the message is the most important thing or acting like teenagers throwing a tantrum. BTW, your message is getting lost. It's a good thing their employer told them about the 4 page newsletter so they can read their list of disparate demands since the message has been lost.
- Have emergency contact information pre-programmed into your phone.
Because 911 is SO hard to dial and they wouldn't already have important numbers in their contacts?
- Have your keys out and ready before you need them.
Yep, this is something I've been told to do even when I'm walking to the parking lot at the grocery store in my little tiny town. Still, if I'm avoiding the mob per your instructions, wouldn't my biggest concern be muggers, rapists or other riff raff? After all these people are supposedly fighting for me, the poor working stiff. I'd think these would be part of general safety tip handout not limited to stinky protesters.
- If you feel that you're in danger or if you observe suspicious or illegal activities, call the police or dial 911.
So, the police are already there, but I should still call 911? Considering the amount of unruly people being arrested and the barriers that need guarding aren't the police already there watching?
- If confronted or attacked, try to remain calm and cooperate by following the attacker's instructions.
So I'm avoiding the mob and still in danger of being attacked? Good group there! Again, if the police are there they'd probably notice.
- Do not attempt to reason or argue with the protesters.
Why the hell would I? If I did happen to walk down where they are I'd probably want to move through as quickly as possible given the stench. And why would I confront them? I'm just walking down the sidewalk, going from point A to point B. I'd probably ignore them (even if they were yelling at me) or give them a thumbs up to keep them out of my way. Though I do think I'd take my cell phone out and snap a few pictures and put them up on the Internet for everyone to enjoy!
- Cooperate and do not risk your personal safety.
Okay, if I'm avoiding them, keeping my property close to my body (which presumably they shouldn't be interested in anyway), and ALREADY been warned above why would they say it again? Corporations aren't that stupid. And a decent secretary, even a lowly office clerk would notice the repetition and make changes.
- Be a good witness and try to remember as many details of what occurred as you can.
A witness to what? I'm avoiding them, walking through with confidence, keeping my wallet (but not my cell phone) close to my body, calling 911 even though the police are already there watching the filthy mob and not driving there or keeping my car doors locked. Besides, if I'm foolish enough to try to navigate police barriers (again, one would think the safety people would be aware of this fact and include this in their tips) and large crowds, I probably won't have a job for very long and might as well join the assholes on the street.
You people ONCE AGAIN have been duped by one of your own making up a bouncy story. As a "writer" (and I use the term loosely) you should've spotted these inconsistencies right away. This is high school English stuff. Oh, and the biggest mistake of all? The stupid person had a PERFECT opportunity for the cops to jump out behind something and didn't even mention them.

He forgot to thank capitalism for the technological marvels that helped to pull this absurdity together. They always seem to skip over that fact. If not for all the social media the little lamebrains wouldn't know what corner to go stand on. They or their parents buy the technology, they can't function without it, but they want the makers of it to stop making money off it.

Keep in mind.
Pittstain is an ex-spurt.
Ex = has been.
Spurt = drip under pressure.
How irrelavent does one get, to the point where their own mommy has to defend them on a socialist/liberal blog?

And they're scared.
Know how I know? I know because a friend in San Francisco took the time to transcribe a document he was given by the major bank he works for. The document, titled "Protest Safety Handbook," explains what a bank employee should do when confronted with the horror and terror of an OWS protest.
What they're scared of, you stupid trust-fund-suckled asshat, is that an employee will get hurt and saddle them with a giant workman's comp case, or one of you spoiled brats will get hurt or worse, a real human customer will get hurt by your antics, and they'll get sued by the customer or your mummykins or daddykins. And those things don'e involve a mass turnout of an enraged electorate, they just require a half-dozen dumbshits to show up and stage a tantrum in their lobby...they're most assuredly NOT afraid that you morons are going to bring down the established order.

Gee compaq, thanks for that photo. I'd not heard about this. Gross and vile. Real bunch of winners, Pitt.
I heard that pot was going for $15 a bag, and heroin was going for just $10. A real bargain.
