DETROIT (AP) - The union that once set the gold standard for American wages is giving up pay raises in exchange for a piece of the auto industry's profits and the promise of thousands of new jobs.

3. Hooray for Ford, GM and the UAW. Hope this catches on.
GM is foundering after Obama stole the lein rights of bond holders and gave them to the UAW.

6. Yes. Unions need to work with corporations so that both may succeed.
A corporation that is overobligated will collapse. There needs to be flexibility so that the corporation can reward workers when there are funds but aren't over burdened in tough times.
hush you!

5. Unions matter.
They do. It's important to locate in a non-union area if you want your company to succeed. Otherwise, unions end up running the company into bankruptcy taxpayer bailout land.

Substitute the word "state" for "corporation" and you see NYS' situation, which I'm caught in the middle of.

That is precisely why the NYS democrat party threw Governor Paterson overboard. Seriously, how often does that sort of thing happen, a sitting Governor not run for reelection by his party? He should have been their darling, first black Governor of New York and the first blind Governor too.
They crucified him and went with Cuomo because Paterson had the balls to say NO to the unions. New York is broke and he said so in no uncertain terms, absolutely unsustainable. He pulled the slop trough away from the union pigs and they were livid about it.
Well, facts is facts. Cuomo is standing there with an empty slop bucket and nothing to pour into the trough.
It's not Paterson's fault.

You're dead on. It's the unions' fault, and I emailed the president of my union and let him know how I felt. The thing is, as I said in another thread, the unions did a lot of groundwork for Obama in the '08 election, with volunteering for phone banks, GOTV efforts, and the like. If Cuomo does go ahead and lay off the 3496 or 3498 (or whatever the number is) of PEF members, PEF may very well not do that volunteering in 2012, and CSEA may follow PEF's lead. The Obamessiah's people think that this would put NY in play for the 2012 elections. Also, the DNC will probably actively come out for any of Cuomo's challengers in 2016 for the Presidential bid.
But, Fred Dicker of the New York Post suggested that Cuomo may secretly be pulling for the Republican challenger to Obama in 2012. Why? Because Cuomo could attack what the Republican had done to clean up the Obumbler's mess. If the Republican, for some unknown reason, can't beat Obama, then Cuomo would get pinned with all of the crap the Obumbler would leave behind.
So, for those reasons, I think that Cuomo's going to fire PEF people, if they refuse the contract (PEF made an offer last night), and it's going to go way beyond the number he's already fired. Maybe another 2500--this year.

Another reason Paterson got tossed, IMHO is because Cuomo, the son of former Governor Mario Cuomo has been being carefully groomed and cultivated for higher office for a long time. I don't think it's too much of a stretch to say Prince Andrew could possibly be a real contender should 0bama face a primary for 2012.
In any event the powers that be in the New York democrat machine don't put much emphasis on being part of a larger national team. Their whole universe is NYC. A separate fifedom all its own, a "world city" if you will and nothing else really matters to them. The Catskill mountains may as well be standing on the dark side of the moon for all they care, along with the rest of upstate. I don't think they really give a rat's ass what sort of impact their actions may or may not have on 0bama's political fortunes.

While I agree that the NY Dem machine thinks that it is the "team to be on," it's highly probable that the rest of the Dem Party doesn't consider NYC, or Albany, as the center of their little universe. But, look ahead to 2016, if these layoffs go through. Now Andrew Cuomo, a Dem with national name recognition, is in a primary against, say, a Dem without name recognition, but a proven track record of supporting public unions. Who do you think that AFSCME and the AFL-CIO are going to support (which is considerable, in Dem circles) in the primaries? Are they going to support someone who went against their wishes in NYS and fired 3500 (to start) of their "union brethren," even though he's well known across the country? Or are they going to throw their (still considerable) weight behind someone who has supported them in their struggles from the beginning? Sure, Cuomo might win--but he'll have to spend considerable money to do it. And, he'll be against such moonbat darlings as Michael Moore, who do have a considerable following.
I see Cuomo in a box of his own making. He figured that, once CSEA ratified the contract (they count their own votes, PEF has an outside auditor come in and count theirs), that PEF would do the same. Now, he's damned if he does, damned if he doesn't.
