Why Middle-Class Americans Are Dumpster Diving

I appreciate how clever these people are. It appears that many people who are living
in poverty, are dumpster diving for food, but the article mentions how people with good-
paying jobs are doing this too. Americans are being squeezed. I know when I leave the
grocery store, I practically have a panic attack. Food prices have increased so much,
and we hear NOTHING about this. People are literally--fed up and dumpster diving to offset
the exhorbitant cost of food--especially healthy food. And it--is a shame that so much is
thrown away.

From the article: http://www.investinganswers.com/a/why-middle-class-amer...
------------------------
Have you ever thought about getting your food out of a trash can?

Dumpster diving has become a hot new trend in America. In fact, dumpster divers even have a trendy new name -- "freegans" -- and as the economy crumbles their numbers are multiplying.

(snip)

During the recent economic downturn, the popularity of dumpster diving has exploded. Today, there are dumpster diving meetup groups, dumpster diving Facebook groups, and even entire organizations such as Food Not Bombs that openly encourage their members to go dumpster diving.

If your family was going hungry, would you go dumpster diving?

You might be surprised at who is doing it. Dumpster diving is not just for the homeless and the unemployed anymore. A lot of people that have decent jobs have picked up on the trend.

I would NEVER !  Even if I were starving I wouldn't.

2. I agree with Harmony

i was stunned to discover that a local bakery dumps all their day old bread. I have a great job and have dumpster dived there myself!

Nobody eat at mimitabby's house.  :o

3. I do think there's a difference between middle-class people doing this as a way to make sure less

Edited on Fri Sep-23-11 01:32 PM by Brickbat

food goes to waste, and lower-class people doing this as a way to stay alive. It's like the difference between homesteading people canning out of necessity (lack of refrigeration, sustenance through the winter) and the middle-class trend of canning now (a celebration of a "simpler" time, preserving food for luxury rather than, again, necessity).

Even in our poorer days, my family NEVER ate from the garbage.  Maybe I'm just spoiled but where the hell do these people live ?  In little Somalia ?

Perhaps the single funniest episode of the short-lived The Goode Family:

They are practicing to live in one of the 57 states created by Obama. He's going to do that right after declaring "Marshall Law". He's going to call it "The Wonderful United States of New Kenya With a Lot of Free Shit".

Now wait a minute, wait a minute, wait a minute.

The primitives promised us in 2008 that this wouldn't happen in the 0bamanation.

Really.  They did.  They promised us it wouldn't happen--and the lonestarnut primitive even said hunger would not exist in America after January 20, 2009.

So what's up with this dumpster diving in today's 0bamanation?

No lie here...5 or 6 years ago, I whipped into the state farmers market to buy a watermelon or 2. There was a Latino family going thru the Dumpster picking out the good tomatoes, lettuce, bananas, etc....I said something to the farmer I was talking to, something like, "Looks like they're stocking up for the month." He said, "No. They come every day....They run a restaurant down town."

I ate at the HARDEE'S on my way out of town.

Would it ever even occur to these morons to take to the field with a firearm and (gasp!) shoot for the pot?

I take coupons out of our recycling bin when there are some good ones that week.  I'd never eat food out of a dumpster.  That's just gross.

The only people I see dumpster diving are wearing ripped up clothes and they look dirty.  They do not look like your average middle class American.  And those people are actually IN the dumpster.

And in the Magic One's America, no less.

You weren't around in late 2008, if memory serves correctly, but trust me, madam, the primitives PROMISED us such wouldn't be happening in the coming 0bamanation.

I wasn't here, but I did read silly crap on the internet about no more starvation with Obama.  Also heard we didn't have to pay mortgages/rent or buy our own gas.

You are correct as always Frank, her words I believe were posted in early Jan 09 and said "how are we ever going to make it to the 20th" or something very close to that.

I'm not too worked up about this. I think most DUmmies like eating from the DUmpster anyway, it is just in their nature. If they won $20,000,000,000 in the state lottery, they'd just dumpster dive in tuxedos and top hats. It is axiomatic.

I asked my son if he saw anyone around here dumpster diving for food.  He said I don't see anyone digging in any garbage.  Especially ours.  It smells like a dead animal is in there.   :o

Go knock on a door, people will feed you if you're hungry. Hell, I'll feed you clean food if you're hungry. I always cook too much.

I don't know about these freegan people.  Isn't that a cult ?  If it is, they're already crazy. No point stopping them.  Just don't eat with them.

Don't these 'freegans' realize they are upsetting the balance of nature by eating the food which nourishes thousands of seagulls, raccoons, squirrels, and feral dogs and cats ?

Thoughtless, inhumane people - causing starvation & death for so many innocent animals. Shame !

I go to the local produce/farm market every other day and get boxes of veggies they are throwing out. I feed that to my rabbits and then I eat them. Does that count?

Don't tell the health department about what you're doing.

For years, some local fellows would go by eateries and pickup their food scraps to feed their hogs. The health department just about put a stop to that. The health department requires them to cook the slop at over 200 degrees for (I think) at least 1/2 hour before feeding it to the hogs.

According to the government, there is very little inflation.  The price increases and inflation are all in your head.  Keep electing people that spend far more money than they need to spend.  It will be okay.   :mental:  More cognative dissonance from the DUmp.

OMG!  H5 for eating your rabbits!    I'll admit I've wondered how my rabbit would taste, but instead I use her poop for my vegetable garden.

I've heard of "freegans." It's disgusting on a few levels.  Not only would I never dumpster dive for food if I could feed myself from my paycheck or my own garden; frankly I'd feel guilty taking the food from the homeless who do this to survive.

How prevalent can any of this be, when most places lock their dumpsters for insurance and liability purposes?  Probably also state health codes, which can levy hefty fines?  Those guys prefer everyone eat 5 star or not at all.

If you leave a dumpster unlocked, it will quickly be filled with trash by your local democrats.

I've gone "Dumpster diving" but not for food. I've gotten some nice chairs, a bookcase and my stereo (A marantx 2225 (http://www.audiocostruzioni.com/r_s/ampli/amplificatori/marantz-2225/marantz%202225.htm)) from the trash among other things. The difference with that is I can spray them with Lysol.

If I don't have to buy something I'm not going too in most cases.

But getting food from the trash is slightly disgusting but more so bad idea.

I can't help but wonder what these freegans do when they inevitably come face-to-face with an animal, most specifically, a skunk.

When we throw out our gently used furniture, we put it next to the dumpster so a neighbor can take it if they would like.  It makes it easier than throwing the item in there so someone has to crawl in to pull it out.

Removing anything, I mean anything, from a dumpster here will get you a hefty fine.

Once it goes in the dumpster it's not up for grabs any longer.

It's sure not like that up here, or in any of Canada if I recall. Once it's in the trash it's more or less a free for all, unless you get banned from the property by it's owners however, it would be uncommon for that to happen from just go through their trash.

I was sooo tempted tonight.

Took out the little dab of trash that I had.  When I opened the container that four houses share, it was full of branches loaded with good apples.  They would have made good muffins, applesauce, pie...  But I couldn't do it.  Going to have to look around and see who doesn't want their apples.  What a waste.

Closer to topic:  I've read about freegans.  They take over abandoned houses.  Steal utilities when they can.  Owners have to go through the same process as landlords to evict.  They mooch everything.  The article I read featured Buffalo, NY and Baltimore, MD.  Sickening.
