Some 20,000 missiles have gone missing in Libya, ABC News reported Tuesday, raising fears that they have fallen into the wrong hands in an unstable region.
The missing weapons are an estimated 20,000 Russian-made portable heat-seeking missiles, ABC reported. They reportedly weigh only 55 pounds and have a range of two miles.
Human Rights Watch's Bouckaert, who has been searching Tripoli for abandoned weapons for months, told The Associated Press last month that a number of weapons warehouses were poorly guarded and appeared to have been heavily looted.

Sorry, one doesn't simply lose 20,000 missiles. And the proof:
ABC News' Brian Ross reported that the disappearance of the weapons from unguarded warehouses was made public at a recent White House meeting.

Yeah, the Islamofascists in Libya are gonna make ornamental planters out of 'em... :whatever:
-
If even one of them is used against us, a deadly retaliation will be in order.
-
Now we're going to have to buy up a buffer around every airport and seal it off with military personnel....and spiral passenger planes into and out of airports.
Maybe that Muslim writing on the bottom of planes is just a cover up for the bullseye.

Ronaldus Magnus sent A-6s and FB-111s to bomb the crap out of Tripoli when they were involved in bringing down ONE airliner. One wonders what the wrath of Barry is going to be like when the Barbary Pirates: The Next Generation, start bringing down aircraft in job lots...

This is Obama's war. He promoted and stirred the pot, sent in help, and couldn't secure the arms warehouses.
So, instead of invading a country looking for weapons of mass destruction, Obama has invaded a country with the intent to distribute weapons of mass destruction. You can't tell me that one of the first things a military operation does is to secure or destroy the local arms caches. It's not as if they were insufficiently guarded, or overwhelmed by a superior force - the warehouses were unguarded.

Obama has already said that when things got ugly he was going to side with the Muslims....hey, he was raised a Muslim so he's got y'all beat.

Al Queda was all over Lybia raiding weapons store houses and bossing the rebels around.
Al Queda has the lions share of missiles...thanks to Obama who turned a blind eye. Further they got their mitts on chemical weapons as well.
Arab Spring reveals the fundamental problem with Liberals. They never look beyond the surface. As a result, islamofascist nations have oil money and hi tech weapon systems. And they are right next door to Europe. And a mere freighter rode to the shores of the US.

Kinda vague about exactly what they were. 30-year-old Strelas? They don't seem to have been able to tag even a single NATO plane with any of them, I have to wonder whether they were even serviceable.

While they may not be able to lock onto a NATO plane, a civilian 747 might be another story.

Especially during takeoff or landing operations.

Definitely an improvement over box cutters. Worst case (for the terrorists); they're not serviceable and they extract the propellant or explosives and kill more of our soldiers with it.

There is something bogus about this story, of course I lack the inside knowledge to say exactly what. If there were 20K of these bastards in one place it would have been a priority strike target for the air interdiction to hit. Without going into boring detail about target prioritization, the FIRST thing you do is take out anything that can interfere with your air dominance BEFORE blowing up random tanks and bunkers.
The high-bypass engines on a transport are cool emitters compared to military strike aircraft, of course military strike planes are capable of high-G evasive action to try to break a missile lock, and also carry a good number of decoy flares to pop like Roman candles at the same time they're turning to shake a heat seeker. But with 20K of the mofos, you could set up a strike alley and serially fire 20 of them at a plane and sooner or later you'd hit a damn' plane.
I am not buying the basic story. There may be some missiles, but I have no trust in ABC's fact-checking as to the 20K, and if they are Viet Nam-era Strelas you would have to put them through a depot rebuild to get even half of them to fire at all, let alone actually track anything.
-
I'm sure something along these lines are true. After the fall of governments of course weapons will be up for grabs. Those weapons are likely to find their way to American Soldiers in Afghanistan and Iraq (used on American forces). Very sadly. :argh:

I just did some looking up, and I think I agree with you here. The Army inventory of FIM-92 'Stinger' - essentially the same class of missile you're referring to - peaked at 15,000 birds around 1987, and currently hovers around 13,400 birds currently. So, if this story is to believed, Libyan government had double to triple the US Army's inventory of shoulder fired missiles, and LOST to al Qaeda a number equivalent to 1.33 times the largest stock of shoulder-fired SAMs that the US Army EVER had?
It's possible that Quadaffi invested that much in the little bastards, but the odds are exceedingly remote.
-
Khadafi must have had some overweight bags! I wonder if his airline charged him the overweight fee.

I'm glad some of you chimed in that know more about this than I do. Thanks.

Good job researching. h5
