So I was at the grocery store yesterday...
Posted by skypuddle on Tue Apr-29-08 10:35 AM

So I was at the grocery store yesterday... It was rainy and cold. :( But I said "The hell with this!" and decided to grill a nice, juicy steak, with some herbed potatoes on the side.

Then I got to thinking, "Hmmmm... Some grilled mushrooms would be nice."

So I go to the aisle o' canned vegetables, and what do I see?

$1.39 for one of those little tiny cans of mushroom stems and pieces.

$1.39??!!

WTF?

As I perused the rest of the grocery store, I noticed that EVERYTHING was through the ****ing roof.

$4.79 for milk, per gallon. $2.49 for eggs. $2.49? ****! Eggs should cost $0.99, $1.29 tops!

I got a loaf of plain old wheat bread, that used to cost $0.89. It was $1.59 (and it was on sale).

At this rate, nobody will be able to afford to ****ing eat in a year's time. At least not in the manner to which we have become accustomed, at any rate.

Thoughts? Similar grocery woes? Let's hear about 'em!

I was excited to see a "So" at the beginning of the sentence, but then this bouncy-wannabe fell flat - no bongs.

Oh, and this DUmmy is a liar - no one can afford a steak in this * economy.  :whatever:

DUmmies don't usually get their mushrooms at a grocery store.   :whatever:

I wanna know where he shops! Those prices are a heck of a lot better than the ones here.

Those prices are higher than around here.  I wanna know what doofus buys those slimey canned mushrooms?  Yuck!

Fresh mushrooms are much cheaper, and tasty too.

So I was at my dealer's house yesterday...
Posted by skypuddle on Tue Apr-29-08 10:35 AM

So I was at my dealer's house yesterday... It was rainy and cold but I need a weed fix so I said "The hell with this!" and decided buy some good herbs since my SSI check arrived two days early. I wanted to buy an ounce but since my dealer's dealer got busted selling meth to grade school kids, the source of weed has dried up. I totally freaked out when my dealer said the ounce I wanted had DOUBLED in price!!!111
WTF!?!? THIS ****ING * ECONOMY has ruined everything
Now with the price of tofu dogs and Cheeto's going the roof I have to decide between being stoned or eating. I guess I'll just have to sneak upstairs and steal food from mom's fridge like I used to.
My hippie mentor was right: Days of weed and no food are better than days of food and no weed.

fixed...

I can't believe that not ONE of the vegan DUmmies has run through this campfire screeching about the steak....

Then I saw this:

Working class, single mother, three teenagers.

I'm at the financial breaking point. We are starting a garden, hanging clothes out and my daughter borrowed one of my Medieval dresses for her senior prom. There is nothing left at the end of the week.

some weeks its all pasta, ramen, mac an cheese, and hot dogs. water or powdered drink mix.

Juice- to expensive, it is a luxury item for when they are sick.

Milk- getting by with using it just for cooking really- and for tea/coffee

The DUmmy won't buy her kids milk or juice, but coffee and tea seem to be plentiful.   :o

You know, I don't know, but I assume drug prices have gone through the roof.

I doubt one can find a $10 ounce of marijuana these days, for example.

How come the primitives and sub-primitives never complain about the cost of their drugs?

So the DUmmie gets paid by the week?  That's obviously B*sh's fault.  Of course paying for internet access so the DUmmie can whine about food prices is a necessity.   :whatever:

All under the watch of the DEMOCRAT controlled congress. Most of the USA understands this because they have the lowest approval/disapproval spread evah.

This is the change that the democrats brought.  BUT NOOOOO, it is not enough change we need more.

Ok, one thought...people waste a LOT now I think with cheap food. I think there's a lot of room to be a little more careful with waste before anyone starves. Prices are higher, but they do have a way of making sure you make the most of what you have, if you weren't inclined to do it in the first place.

I just bought eggs for a buck too...Kroger had them on sale 10 for 10..I have about 5 dozen right now...I'll be doing eggs for breakfast and hard-boiled for salads and then we'll consume a bit more modestly for a couple weeks before they are on sale again..I think Walmart is still selling them for about 1.39-1.59 a dozen--seems to vary, but I don't know that dummies are allowed to set foot in walmart :naughty:

My wife and I usually eat for about $300 a month.  Thats not including when we eat out, just what we spend at the grocery store.  This also takes into account that she's 35 weeks pregnant, and eats anything that isn't bolted to the floor.

No refineries and pushing alternative fuels (they loved that until the law of unintended consequenses kicked in) have caused all food prices to rise.

You can buy HUGE boxes of powdered milk at Aldi's for $7.  It makes several gallons and once you get used to it tastes fine.
I buy veggies by the case for between .30-.70 a can.  My box of 2doz eggs were kinda expensive this time.  I paid $4.29.  They have huge bulk bags of pancake mix, flour and stuff for less than $5 a bag.  Honestly if you are frugal you could cook for a family of 4 for $200 a month.  We don't know what hard living is, living without pop/coffee/bottled water for a month or two never killed anyone.

When I was young, we would make that gawdawful combination of 1/2 milk, 1/2 powdered milk/water.

I hated it then and I don't drink milk to this day because of it.

I'm not desperate and actually children will do just fine on water if that's all there is and I know mine would prefer it over powdered milk. The key is to stay hydrated--milk is not needed to accomplish that end. In fact, when you talk to a pediatrician and they tell you the recommended amount of milk for children age 3 and up, it really should not hurt anyone's budget, if their children are drinking milk in the amount they should, to buy regular milk even at 4 bucks a gallon.

That said, the only milk I've seen for that price here(central Ohio) is either brand name milk like Reiter at the most expensive stores or organic milk, milk substitutes like soy, or Lactaid. I just bought milk at 2.50 a gallon at kroger last week. Milk can be frozen if one is so inclined. Before the hike the lowest I ever got it for was 2 bucks a gallon on sale so 50 cents difference really is not a burden, especially since it accompanied my children getting older and not needing so much milk.

I'm with free, that taste sticks with me to this day when its mentioned. It is vile and if I had the choice between it or no milk, I'd choose no milk. I also know that there is enough wiggle room in the grocery budget with some of the 'extras' we buy food wise that we wont have to resort to that option unless the US spins into a depression of some kind. If that happens, we got more to worry about as a country, family, and individuals then powdered milk versus traditional.

You need milk to make a lot of things.  I use the powdered to make stuff.  I might drink it with a lot of chocolate in it.  If I was drunk.  I did used to give it to my kids, they never noticed a difference between that and the real stuff.

Wow.

I used to pay ten bucks a lid, back in the late 1970s, early 1980s.

One of those baggies.

Then I got to thinking it was silly, so I quit, and never looked back.

Man, if this is the case, how come the primitives aren't yelling and screaming about it?  The price of gasolline doubles, the price of milk doubles, and one would think the world's coming to an end.

The price of marijuana goes up 16x+, and no complaints from the primitives?

Wow.

Don't know about a lid, but a nickel used to be 5 bucks, a dimebag 10 bucks, and a quarter bag, 25 bucks. When it went up to 35 we were all pissed.   :-)

So, I was at the grocery store today. Safeway did a whole remodel and they're having this month-long grand opening celebration. I got a fresh pineapple for $2.99 (it was $3.99 but I had a dollar off coupon), organic salad mix (I usually buy the whole lettuce but it was on sale and I had a $2.00 coupon), a huge bag of carrots for $3.00, these cute little baby cucumbers (5 to a bag) for $2.00), fresh mushrooms (I can't remember what they were a pound but I don't even think I had a half a pound in my bag), strawberries were a little pricey, but worth it. I got pears, tomatoes on the vine, sprouts, green onions, champaign mangos, bananas, red onions, potatoes and yams. Oh, and a bag of Texas Ruby Red grapefruit...they're really cheap this time of year and have a flavor to die for. The most expensive thing I got was yams...they were 1.29 a lbs.

Then I was off to the meat department. I had 3 $2.00 off coupons to use there. Imagine how shocked I was...Tilapia fish for .99 a lbs. I got 4, they're great for fish tacos or grilled and served with the pear chutney I canned last year. Under $4 for two meals and I hadn't even used my coupons yet! One coupon was for $2 off anything in their full service meat counter. Shrimp was on sale for $2.99 a pound. I bought 2 pounds for about $4. There must be about 80 of them, which works out to be 4 meals, maybe more if I use them as part of a stir fry or something. On my way to the discount meat bin (this is the greatest thing...they take 30 to 50% off and most of the time they're DAYS away from the sell by date) I saw they had these Jenni-O turkey tenderloins for 9.99 a package and were BOGO, you get about 8 servings a package...and I didn't have to kill, gut, or clean anything. Anyway, at the discount bin I got a Rancher's Reserve tenderloin roast, marked down 50%, plus my $2 coupon. Chicken breast strips too. I don't usually buy chicken for obviousl reasons but this was just too good a deal to pass up.

Every aisle I went down...sale! sale! sale! Bob's Red Mill flours, gormet rice blends, Smart Balance butter blend and Peanut Butter, organic milk, cottage cheese, deli counter turkey, yougurt, fat free CoffeeMate, Tropicana not from concentrate orange juice...they even had a coupon for $4 off a bottle of wine from a local vineyard. Sure there's not a lot of convenience foods but I have a crock pot and most of it IS quick to fix. So I get up to the check out counter...they were giving 10% off the total to everyone with a club card and I had a $10 off coupon if I spent over $50, plus an extra 3% off for using my cloth bags (take that Algore)...and there's this unkempt, DUmpy chick with a sour expression and one of those gypsy style skirts that were popular back in the 60's standing with this grey-haired dude with a pony tail and beard (probably her life partner). They were whining and moaning about how expensive everything was. Well no wonder...frozen pizza (not the cheap kind, mind you but the self-rising kind), organic frozen vegetarian dinners consisting of foods I hadn't even heard of, free range chicken (I almost invited the poor thing out to my farm so she could kill her own chicken...mine ARE free range, after all, but my roosters have never seen a moonbat and I thought they might attack), Earthbound Farms salads, Newman's Own Salad Dressing, Nancy's Yogurt, Tim's Organic Potato Chips...good Lord, they even had organic Cheeto's and 2 packs of cigarettes. The checker tried to tell them if they had a club card they'd be able to save a few dollars but (they seemed pretty agitated at this point) she screeched something under her breath about Bush, spying, and the Jooooos and the old grey pony-tail said something like "Oh, you'd like that...fascist corporate hack working for the man, recording our purchases in some big government database...sorry, dude, I KNOW better!" They grabbed their bags and skulked off, muttering about the terrible Bush economy.

As for me...the bonus at the end was with every $50 purchase I also got 20 cents off per gallon gasoline (my Safeway has a gas station). I filled up my truck, went home, put my groceries away, put the roast in the crock pot, and went outside to work in the yard on this beautiful spring day. Funny thing though, as I was pulling into my driveway, this old Volvo passes by with an "I break for Unicorns" bumper sticker on one side and an "Impeach Bush" on the other. I could swear it was DUmpy chick and pony tail guy arguing back and forth and danged if there wasn't this thick black cloud right over their car that actually seemed to be following them. I was kind of hoping God would come down out of that cloud and they would see the light so I could have my very own bouncy story...but I guess God figured he'd probably get so ticked listening to them bitch he'd blast them with a bolt of lightening and they'd just blame Rove.

Cindie, I use the 'discount meat bins' a lot. They call them 'mgrs specials' at Krogers. beautiful pieces of beef and when chicken is on sale and they are overstocked, I get it about 30 percent off of the sale price--especially when they have sales on whole chickens. My pantry and freezer are full currently. I really only need to stock things like fruits, veggies, milk, and eggs for a few weeks. The bonus, we didn't break the bank doing it. Shop smart--simple as that. I don't buy many convenience foods either, but I sure come out of the grocery store with some beautiful meats, fruits, veggies, etc.

But you should have given her four to begin (by your own admission), so if I lower mine by one, and you raise yours up to where it belonged in the first palce, she will be suffering the needless loss of one bong.  I don't think I can be party to that injustice.

Well with the price of pot these days, that's something that could really help! I had absolutely NO idea that the price increased SO much. Wonder why they don't make ethanol from marijuana and leave corn for important things like tortillas and sour mash.

Ah, to be young and dumb.

Freedumb, I know because I have smoked weed. What do you want me to do, lie and say I'm an angel? Far from it. I've never, however, done meth, cocaine, crack, heroin, or anything like that.

Ah, man -- my whole world just came crashing in!

I'm no angel either.  I once did a bicarbonate of soda shortly after finishing a glass of wine.
