Postal workers protest closures

DES MOINES, Iowa — Postal workers from across Iowa converged on the state capital to protest plans to close 178 post offices and four processing centers.

Saturday’s protest in Des Moines came as the U.S. Postal Service considers ways to cut costs. The postal service lost $8.5 billion last year and is expected to lose $10 billion this year.

Larry Ginter, of Rhodes, has been a letter carrier for 26 years. He said that the closure of the Rhodes post office would put people out of work and force customers to travel miles to the nearest post office.

The processing centers at risk of closing are in Carroll, Cedar Rapids, Creston and Waterloo.

The closure of the Sioux City center is already in the works. — AP

1. Okay Steve. The USPS is losing about 10 billion a year. What would you recommend to stop the bleeding? My view is that efficiencies alone, won't close the gap.

DUmmy SlimJimmy has fewer than 1000 posts.

Established moonbats like the Weeper don't respond to newbies.

If tey didn't have to pay the absurd wages those postal workers make then they could at least have a head start on getting things under control at the USPS. Outside of the UAW, the Government Union Thugs are as much pirates as the private sector ones are.

A person has to be nearly blind to not see the USPS problem. Just for a week, save up all your mail in a big pile.

Then, sort it into two piles, one for mail bearing first class postage, and the other for mail sent at bulk rates, virtually free.

It's almost certain that the second pile will be ten times the size of the first. The USPS is buried in junk mail, transporting, sorting, and delivering millions of tons of garbage that no one wants, for nearly nothing. If junk mail paid a reasonable rate, its volume would be hugely reduced, which we'd all appreciate, millions of cubic yards of landfill space would be saved, and USPS would handle less volume, needing fewer employees, while generating more revenue.

Some jobs in junk mail would be lost. It's fine with me if Pedro Picasso is laid off and has to browse the DUmp at home.

Instead, they want to continue raising rates on an ever-shrinking volume of first-class mail, and shut down Saturday delivery. Crazy.

First reply and it is correct: http://www.scpr.org/blogs/economy/2011/09/08/how-save-u... /

Strange.
In the link provided, they trash the Repubs for wanting to basically "gut" the payments.
That was pretty much my take on it.
