Republican Bob Turner is now leading his Democratic opponent, Assemblyman David Weprin, by 6 percentage points with just four days remaining in the hotly-contested race for ex-Rep. Anthony Weiner’s seat, according to a new Siena poll.
The poll found Turner, a Queens businessman who unsuccessfully challenged Weiner in 2010, is leading 50-44 among likely voters in the Democrat-dominated NY-9, which includes parts of Brooklyn and Queens.
Turner’s favorable/unfavorable rating is 48-34, while Weprin is at 41-41. By a 43-32 percent margin, likely voters say Turner is running the more positive campaign, and by a similar 39-30 percent margin, they say Weprin’s is the more negative campaign.
Turner has gained considerable ground with independents, and now has a 38-point lead with this key voting bloc. He also has an overwhelming 90-6 percent lead among fellow Republicans, while Weprin has only a 63-32 percent lead among Democrats
Over the past month, Turner has managed to gain 12 percentage points on Weprin. Siena’s last poll, released Aug. 10, found his trailing the Queens assemblyman, 48-42 among likely voters. ...

And possibly a foreshadowing of 2012.

And possibly a foreshadowing of 2012.
I've seen stuff that an unnamed NY Dem operative said, suggesting that the very fact that Weprin isn't crushing Turner is a major embarrassment for the Dems. Foreshadowing? I think so. :evillaugh:

I was thinking the same thing but I'll cautiously wait to count the chicks once they've hatched. Bob Turner could still lose this thing but I don't think so.
This could be a localized thing, just an anomaly reflecting discontent among the voters in that district for one reason or another such as Weprin's support of the ground zero mosque or it could be an indication of something bigger and more widespread.
I'm leaning toward it being both. Weprin is demonstrating a profound lack of understanding of his would be constituency in supporting the ground zero mosque. In case he hadn't heard Brooklyn is after all part of the greater New York City metropolitan area and New Yorkers, as one great big extended family, consider themselves to be victims of 9/11.
Never mind all that kumbayah-muslims-are-people-too crappola in the LSM, the real sentiments of New Yorkers will show at the polls.
Most affronted are no doubt Brooklyn's sizable Jewish population and certainly Arab/Israeli relations must have been covered at some point in Weprin's education. Perhaps he was sick that day?
Another large slice of the Brooklyn demographic is the Hispanic population, increasingly becoming disillusioned with the democrat party as of late as well.
