President Barack Obama intends to deliver his much-anticipated speech laying out his jobs agenda and plan to cut the federal deficit on Sept. 7 to a joint session of Congress. Mr. Obama’s timing steps directly on a Republican presidential debate scheduled for that same evening in Simi Valley, Calif.

The president sent a letter to congressional leaders Wednesday requesting time to address a joint session on Sept. 7 at 8 p.m.

“Our Nation faces unprecedented economic challenges, and millions of hardworking Americans continue to look for jobs,” Mr. Obama wrote. “It is my intention to lay out a series of bipartisan proposals that the Congress can take immediately to continue to rebuild the American economy by strengthening small businesses, helping Americans get back to work, and putting more money in the paychecks of the Middle Class and working Americans, while still reducing our deficit and getting our fiscal house in order.”

“It is our responsibility to find bipartisan solutions to help grow our economy,” Mr. Obama continued, “and if we are willing to put country before party, I am confident we can do just that.”

is the rest of the media gonna call him out on this gimmickry? no
if the candidates from congress sat out the joint session, would they vilify them? yes

Worth noting: 8 p.m. ET is also the planned starting time for the Sept. 7 Republican candidates presidential debate at the Reagan Library in California. It's scheduled to be broadcast on MSNBC, CNBS and Telemundo. Politico will be streaming it.

ok so i misunderstood it. i assumed it was to happen during the day and then Bachman/Paul etc would not have enough time to get to the debate.
but they scheduled it for the exact same time! this is a direct stab at FOX! carney's explanation was "well, there are plenty of cable channels out there so both events could get coverage."
this gimmickry is disgusting!

he took a 2 week vacation when people wanted action "Now". then he waits to address the issue during the debate. way to steal the stage.

personally for me i never watch presidential address' and with the debate on i will have something to watch when his debate takes over every other channel.

Dear Mr. President,

Quote
“Our Nation faces unprecedented economic challenges, and millions of hardworking Americans continue to look for jobs,”

No chit, Sherlock.  If you'd grab your shoulders and yank really hard, your head might pop out of your ass and you'd see that we've been in a mess ever since you took office.  Do you really need to address Congress to tell them this?  Do you think that Americans do not know this?  Have you waited through three years economic disaster to finally announce your master plan?  Idiot.

Quote
Mr. Obama wrote. “It is my intention to lay out a series of bipartisan proposals that the Congress can take immediately to continue to rebuild the American economy by strengthening small businesses,

Strengthening the tax rates and regulations on small business is more like it.  Just stop lying you amoral failure.

Quote
helping Americans get back to work,

Someone slept through economics class.  Higher taxes and government spending don't create jobs.

Quote
and putting more money in the paychecks of the Middle Class and working Americans, while still reducing our deficit and getting our fiscal house in order.”

The last time you passed legislation geared toward putting money in paychecks, my health insurance premiums quadrupled.  Errr....  no thanks, moron (and I was phased out of the so-called stimulus anyway).

Quote
“It is our responsibility to find bipartisan solutions to help grow our economy,” Mr. Obama continued, “and if we are willing to put country before party, I am confident we can do just that.”

If, by bipartisan you mean "my plan or no plan", then yes, you're telling the truth.  There's nothing about you, Mr. Failure, that is bipartisan.  You put ideology and party before country every time.  You make me sick.

Thanks,
Joe Taxpayer

Rugnuts, surprisingly it's NBC that Obama's screwing.  Rush covered this on today's show.  He thinks Boehner should say STFU and GTFO to zero.  The House is under no obligation to grant this request.  He also said that the republican pundits and talking heads would say to Boehner that if you don't cave to zero, you will lose the independents.  I'm not so sure.  What do you all think?

I think you're right.  There is a lot of Obama fatigue, especially given the sorry state of the economy.  Yet another speech that will interrupt those who actually have concrete plans to jump-start the economy is not going to move many people to watch the POTUS & more importantly the TOTUS.

Once again we see him showing his true stripe. This man was not born to lead, he simply does not possess that quality. He is continuing on the only path he knows, that of street level agitator.
His choreography of the timing of this is designed to set a sharp contrast, to divide. He is a one trick pony, being the rabble rouser and fomenting division along racial and economic class lines is the only thing he knows how to do.

The problem with that is that once you have had success with that tactic and gained a victory you have to be able to seamlessly shift into being the leader in order to maintain your flock. He won with that in '08 but failed to deliver any shred of leadership since.

Excuse my language, but, what a dick move.  The buzz on twitter is that Obama sent the letter to Boehner just 15 minutes before the announcement, and the latest buzz is Boehner has responded by asking him to move it to Thursday.

"The interesting question is: What is it about this president that has stripped away the veneer of respect that normally accompanies the Office of the President? Why do Republicans think this president is unpresidential and should dare to request this kind of thing? It strikes me that it could be the economic times, it could be that he won so big in 2008 or it could be, let's face it, the color of his skin. This is an extraordinary reaction to a normal sequence of events," MSNBC contributor Richard Wolffe said on "The Last Word."

This race card shit is really getting old. Can't you just admit your man ****ed up when he picked the date for his teleprompter speech to coincide with the Republican debate?

And when did the democrats ever treat George Bush with any kind of the respect that normally accompanies the Office of the President?

When you don't have a viable argument, it's always best to play the race card.

I think that was in Ayers' book -- page 112 or so.

We cancelled about ten years ago. We dont miss it. In fact it made things a lot easier. And less aggravating.

I watch Fox News online when I want. And we download movies and tv series commercial free whenever we want.

We still have a TV. Its like new. But its for 'decoration'. Its a paper weight.

We dont watch ANY TV and we are still FAR more informed than the average bloke or lemming or whatever.

when asked if i disapprove of congress i say yes. because of the 90% of congressman that i disagree with keep the status quo alive and well, which is the problem with congress.  they need to be more divisive with all establishment DC'ers.

Bachmann’s Response to President Obama’s Speech to a Joint Session of Congress

Congresswoman Michele Bachmann (MN-6) hosted a press conference and responded tonight to President Obama’s Jobs Speech. Below are her remarks as delivered:

Unfortunately, it seems, every time the President speaks, his policies have cost the American people jobs and future prosperity.

Tonight the President under the veil of one of the most sacred deliberative forums, a joint session of Congress, delivered another political speech where he doubled down on more of the same policies that are killing the economy.

Mr. President, what among your proposals was new? What here hasn’t already been tried and failed before?

While the President’s speech comes on the heels of a trillion dollars of failed stimulus, bailouts, and temporary gimmicks aimed at creating jobs, the President continued to cling to the idea that government is the solution to creating jobs.

PBS alters transcript to hide Obama gaffe

Barack Obama has gone to Congress asking for more money to spend. The President, in a rambling and tedious exercise mixing blame with demands, made quite a few dubious statements in laying out the case for Congress to vote for the plan which as yet does not exist. Much like Obamacare, Congress must ultimately vote for the bill to know what is in it.

At one point Mr. Obama made a major gaffe; he identified Abraham Lincoln as the founder of the Republican Party.

Such a gaffe would have brought huge amounts of ridicule and derision on George W. Bush, but in the case of Obama the media yawned.

Actually, they did more than yawn; government-funded PBS has altered the transcript of the President's speech, removing the offending comment.
