Title: Hi, I'm new here. I have a question about this forum
Post by: RonBush on August 25, 2011, 09:56:50 PM
I consider myself slightly right of center.  I enjoy political forums and the conservative point of view, but I am not really a far right conservative.  I was on Free Republic, which I enjoyed a lot, but apparently I have been banned for saying the wrong thing, expressing the wrong opinion or something.  I don't know.  I just know I can't log in any more and I know this has happened to other people.

I got to know and like some of the people on Free Republic and now I have no way to contact them again.  I don't want to go through the same thing here.  Is this a place where I can be shut out for expressing an unpopular opinion?  If so, I don't want to get started here, make friends and then get shut out.  I should just leave now.

What are the policies here?

That's Free Republic for you.

Rule 1.  Don't be a ****ing asshole.
Rule 2.  See Rule 1.

After that, it's all peachy.  Welcome, I guess.

Welcome, Ron!  :cheersmate:

Nothing to worry about, just be yourself. The only people who ever get banned from the Cave are the knuckle dragging mouth breathers who come here from teh DUmp with the sole purpose of inflicting as much insult as possible. Apparently they are under the impression that they will be immediately banned just for expressing views which are contrary to the conservative membership here. That's the way it is a teh DUmp so they assume that's the way it is here. Not so. They simply lack the grey matter to stick around for awhile and actually engage the folks here intellectually so instead they keep on with the kamikaze thing. That's what gets them banned, being assholes, not their political views. They are as predictable as lemmings but now and then we'll get one that's actually worth some grins & giggles at least for awhile.

These are some of the things that might have gotten me banned on Free Republic:

I agreed with Milton Friedman about legalization of drugs.

I talked about the economic effects of stricter immigration enforcement.  By the way, I favor stricter immigration enforcement.  I think it will have some positive and some negative economic impacts, but I favor it.  The fact that I mentioned some of the negative economic impacts might have gotten me banned.

I got tired of all the name calling and insults of liberals and I said I thought it was childish.

Once when someone called Obama a socialist I said it depended on your definition of socialist and posted several definitions from dictionaries and discussed how by some definitions he was and by others he was not.

OK, would any of that get me banned here?

None of that would get you banned, or warned, or anything. However, those last two would start some heated debate. I mention the last two, because I would certainly jump into that debate.

Well like I said I just got banned from Free Republic and that was a drag after the time I spent there, so I just want to know how things are here before I put in time and energy.  Worried or concerned or careful could all describe how I am approaching this.

As for here, the mods occasionally give someone a time out for a few days, but mostly you have to be really nasty to get banned.

I agree that if we were to up and deport 20 million illegals that it would impact the economy, but it would also have a positive impact on the services they bleed off of that they don't pay in to. I also don't buy into the fact that illegals are taking American jobs; we just need to create an environment that grows jobs. Our unemployment was at 4.3% in the early 2000's, and we still had the illegals. I'm also in favor of removing a lot of the unnecessary red tape for legal immigrants. It's a f'n nightmare trying to get to this country. Now, as for those illegals, I want the immigrants that actually WANT to come and assimilate. In other words, leave your ****ing flags at home or stay there.

He's a mixture of Socialism and Fascism...and yes, there can be elements of both. He's very comfortable with "certain" businesses (there should be an investigation into his dealings with Buffet and Soros) and he's intent on Socializing as many programs as possible. The medical industry comes to mind. The constant seems to be he's intent on destroying Capitalism.

Lots of good comments that describe CC pretty well, RB.

There is lots of room for differing opinions, even if those opinions are worthless.  :-)

I'm one of the few posters here who won't dabble in the DUmp. It's already enough that I wash my hands after taking a dump, why would I deliberately want to dabble in a place where I'd need to wash my hands after reading every post? Makes no sense to me.

Washing my hands that often will dry out the skin, then I've got THAT to deal with.

By all means, state your case on the issues. Be prepared to back up your statements with factual evidence, or if it's your opinion you're stating, by all means so state.

Be careful of your sources. Generally, Wiki is not a good one and quoting something from either the Daily Kos or World Net Daily doesn't really demonstrate much but a decided bias one way or the other.

On the other hand, if all you'd like to do is laugh and have some fun, there's no need to post evidence to support that. Just go ahead and bust a gut -- we'll laugh with you.

And welcome!

Thanks everybody for your comments.  This sounds like just what I was looking for.  A bunch of nutty people with a sense of humor and open minded curiosity.  I think most of you are more to the right than I am, but that is what I was looking for.  I am not particularly driven to persuade anyone of my point of view.  I am more interested in being exposed to and listening to other points of view.  However one of the ways I learn what people really think is to ask challenging questions.

I am not going to write to much about my self here.  I will do that in my bio sometime in the next few days so it will be one place that people can find.

Thanks again for your welcome.

I am also not sure about legalizing some of the stronger drugs.  Friedman's point is that we have not been able to stop this and the attempt to stop it has done more harm than good.

I don't drink, smoke or take drugs.  I think all these things are unhealthy and destructive.  If I could somehow magically eliminate all cocaine, speed, heroin, alcohol, tobacco,  marijuana and so on, I would do it.  It would make the world a better place.  The point is that I don't have that magical power.  The actual reality of the situation is that we can't stop these things and our attempt to stop them has done more harm than good.

You'll need to read a few of his last posts to figure out why TNO was banned.

As I recall, he was pretty much a fly-by poster. He'd come in, shit on the carpet, and then expect somebody else to clean it up after running a thread into the ground. Just sorta the way he operated.

But yeah, before the plug was finally pulled on him, he had amassed quite a few posts -- which is a testament to the tolerance of this site in allowing alternative views to be expressed.

I don't remember why TNO got banned, but I would agree with Gina -- you're waaaay too concerned about that. Just dive in and damn the torpedoes.

I finally got around to writing a more detailed bio.  Here it is, and I will also post it in my profile:

I am 61, born in 1950.  I am a retired software engineer/computer programmer.

These are my major conservative influences:

When I was 18 I read just about everything Ayn Rand wrote.  She had a major influence on me.  I later ended up disagreeing with her atheism, but I still have a lot of respect for her.

In 1980 Milton Freidman published "Free to Choose".  This also had a big impact on me.  Freidman was saying something very similar to Ayn Rand, but he went into a lot more details about how it would work in the real economy.

Throughout the 70's and 80's I was a big fan of William Buckley's show "Firing Line".  I didn't always agree with him, but I almost always respected his logic.  I subscribed to his magazine "National Review" for about a year.  I didn't like it as much as "Firing Line".

When I sas a teenager I liked the firey anger of Ayn Rand, but as I aged I prefered the the calm, friendly, polite, scholarly presentation of Freidman and Buckley.

Today there is a new breed of angry conservative.  Sometimes I am uncomfortable with the anger, but I am very interested in this new conservative movement and where it is going.  That is the big reason I am here.

I would currently call myself slightly right of center.  I think most of the people here are more to the right than I am.

Back in your day, conservatives were depicted as angry paranoid war mongers who wanted to nuke little girls playing with flowers.

Why were you so angry and paranoid back then?  And why did you hate children? When did you decide you didn't want to nuke little girls? What was your pivot point?

I think you are referring to the famous TV ad that Johnson used against Goldwater in the 1964 election.  I was only 14 then, but I remember the election clearly.  It is the first one I took much interest in.  I think at that point I may have read a little of Ayn Rand.  In any event I was strongly for Goldwater and felt bad when he lost.

Quote
Why were you so angry and paranoid back then?

I think people in general were less angry back then than they are now.  There was probably more paranoia.  The USA and USSR had thousand of nuclear tipped missiles aimed at each other and most people assumed it was likely they would eventually be used.   It was a pretty paranoid situation.  The war with terrorists seems pretty mild in comparison.

I don't think I follow you.

I don't think I follow you.

You are manufacturing a new angry breed of conservative  that you cannot back up with reality.

Liberals are on the rampage but you see angry conservatives.

So, when did you stop being an angry paranoid conservative? Only angry paranoids would be okay with nuking little girls for only playing with flowers. What the hell was wrong with you angry conservatives back in the 1960s?

Okay, really, why are you here? Are you here to lecture us on a new breed of  angry  conservatives that are mostly just media creations just like there were in the 1960s? If so, why are you so gullible? Why not just join the DUmp and be with other gullibles?

Curiosity.  I'm curious about what sort of people you are, what really motivates you, what you believe.  I may stop posting though, and just read.  You posted a question to me so I decided to respond.  If you are genuinely curious about me I would be happy to interact.  If you are angry and want to fight I would rather not.

Here is the ad you are talking about.  Take a look at it

Do you have any links that prove there is an angry new breed of conservative or is that just something you make up out of whole cloth and project it onto other people?

How do you intend to figure out what makes us tick when you are already projecting your own ignorant biases on us? Will you not only confirm you bias that way?

You've already completely missed my point. Back in the 1960s Goldwater was said to be an angry breed of conservative. What has changed?

Since I am referencing the infamous Daisy smear campaign  are you not able to figure out I may know something about it?
