Oh my.
By the way, nadin didn't donate during the latest fund drive.

Quake raises safety concerns as nuclear plant shut
(Reuters) - The largest earthquake to hit the East Coast of the United States in 67 years raised concerns on Tuesday about the safety of the country's nuclear power plants.
The 5.8 magnitude quake's epicenter was just a few miles from the two-reactor North Anna nuclear power plant operated by Dominion Resources in Mineral, Virginia, 80 miles southwest of Washington.
The plant lost power and automatically halted operations after the quake. While a Dominion spokesman reported no "major" damage to the facility, three diesel generators were required to kick in and keep the reactors' radioactive cores cool. A fourth diesel unit failed.
While nuclear power plants can operate safely on back-up power, failure of generators was a key reason for the disaster at Japan's Fukushima Daiichi plant after a 9.0 magnitude quake and tsunami in March.

Notice one of the diesel units failed. If nothing else this should be a WARNING.
I will leave the funny editorial commentary...
No primitives showed up at this campfire.

Apocalypse Nadin should be her DU name. Hmmm, sounds like a new Twitter name to me. What would she do without Google?

Wonder what human error caused the diesel generator to fail?

I like that name. If you did a twitter account under that name, the appropriate avatar/profile picture would have to be this one:
:panic:

I'm sure the five or six thousand folks working at electric plants along the eastern seaboard are all taking swift action to implement Plan Nadin, now that she's officially given her warning.

Wouldn't work. Even Sheen wouldn't agree to be in her.

Need to add to Nadin's resume:
geologist
deisel mechanic
nuclear power plant engineer
disaster recovery specialist

Yup--we're already having meetings at the plant manager level here. Her name has figured very prominently.
(Oh, and nadin? STFU. The Fukushima actions are quite enough, thanks.) The DG "failing" is more than likely a shutdown due to a condition that would PREVENT damage to the DG. Being qualified (electrically) on the DG's, you'd be amazed how LITTLE it really takes to create a shutdown. These things are designed to go from shut down to rated speed, fully loaded, in LESS THAN 10 SECONDS. Try that with your car at home and see how well it does.
-
I love how the media is hyping this up, calling it the largest earthquake to hit this part of the country in 67 years.
It may be accurate, but it's mindblowing how they sensationalize it.

I think you mean "Fiuku", as nutcase once put it.

We (as in the nuclear industry) are getting our tits put through the wringer coming up with things we'll need to have in case of a Fukushima-type event. It's gonna be PAINFUL.

Yep.....back in the day, my Onan 850 would do it in seven seconds, and that was during weekly exercise periods when it had to sync with the shore power frequency and phase angle (make-before-break transfer switch).
On the load side you couldn't tell when the transfer occurred without watching the enunciator panel.
The Virginia genset failure could have been a simple "overcrank" shutdown due to a plugged injector or a bad glow plug.......which is why you generally test them under full load every week, but occasionally shit happens.......

Why didn't she bring up the possible dangers of nuclear plants yesterday after the quake happened? Why wait 12 hours? Nadin knows the dangers of nuclear plants and earthquakes and nuclear milk. NADIN! Get with it. Should I buy milk?

Or in simpler terms, "That's why they have four of them."

Duly noted. Thank you.

To hell with nadin. I think we should check with the sub skipper.

Fiuku is going to be worst than Chernobyl... well it is, and I actually undershot that one. I did not take into account the quite possible China syndrome at play here. Sorry, Cassandra was not that negative on this and missed it.

You probably should spell "Diesel" correctly. :-)
Edit - Not you, Erasmus had misspelled it.

39. Also it was a surface quake
which makes it almost a shaker, instead of a roller. Shakers are more damaging, rule of thumb, as well
Yes, if this was a deep quake, at 5.8 it would have felt less intense...
nadin knows shakers and rollers.

Only if you can see it in total darkness . . .

I always have trouble with that word.

Five. SEPS (Supplemental Emergency Power System) extends action statements from 72 hours to 14 days, meaning if a DG is inop for maintenance or other reason, SEPS can be brought in to power that bus. Sounds like they have one which can be supplied to any of the emergency busses (two "trains" at each unit.)
We have one as well.
-
Just going with what was in the story, but thanks for the full info.

I always have trouble with that word.
"I" before "E", except after "C", or when pronounced like "A" as in "anchors aweigh".

Sometimes I think Nadin should simply be banned from applying for DUmmie of the year. One expects the top 10 to have some redeeming value, some comedic relief but nadin is just a boring blowhard. She may wear many hats but none are fashionable. I don't mind her getting some kind of special award like most boringly arrogant DUmmie lifetime achievement award but she's simply not of the same caliber as, say Pam or Stinky. Stinky at least is a stupid Mafioso with a fancy litterbox and an anonymous *****...cat, beaten into submission by a dominatrix wife who makes him dress like a clown and shit in a litterbox. TiT knew everything too , but he was entertaining and informative. Who knew Seal Team 6 had been secretly active in Vietnam before they were even created?
And for all her questionable knowledge, does anyone really know anything about her life. She says she wears many hats, but what kind of hats are they? Baseball caps (and does she have a pony tail that she pulls out through the little hole in the back), a sombrero, a fashionable felt hat that would've been at home at William and Kate's wedding, one of those cool vintage hats with the netting that falls over the face, a swimming cap with those rubber flowers all over it? All of the above? She pretty much exemplifies that "a little knowledge is a bad thing". She knows just enough to be the court jester of DU.

Yeah yeah, lol. After this thread though, I don't think I'll have trouble remembering it in the future!
Though there are some exceptions:
science
deity (though I've heard some pronounce this with the "ay" sound)
foreign
forfeit
heifer
either
and hell, I probably spelled at least half of those words wrong!

Well, madam, dear, love of my life, you may have something there.
Mr. Wiggum and I are always open to suggestions about how to improve the Top 10 DUmmies.
The current problem is that as things have been, it takes up too much of our time during December; it takes up an awesome amount of his time and my time. You wouldn't believe how much time it takes up. However, this is NOT a solicitation for help; Mr. Wiggum and I are riding on a bicycle built for two and it suits both of us very much, and there's no third seat.
I've already said there's going to be only the Top 10 primitives, no runners-up, and two other special awards.
If, instead of having ten primitives ranked by numerical order, how about having primitives ranked in the top of ten categories--say, "most stupid," "most boring," "most interesting," &c., &c., &c. (ten categories, one award each category--one of the two special awards is already for "new primitive," so don't count that among ten proposed categories).
You may have an idea here, madam, desire of my vigorously robust heart, but we're in the fourth quarter here, the top of the 8th inning now, and so if anyone wishes to suggest such a thing, the time is now.

With respect, what about TiT? Look back up at the screen, I'm not talking those - I mean Tiburon's gift to military science and the timeless annals of military valor. Just because Nadin's expertise is universal instead of being limited to merely martial endeavors, I feel we need to keep her in the running in the spirit of equal opportunity, a concept the DUmmies themselves positively rave about (As long as a minority or female Leftist wins).

No DUmmy has been more wrong about more things, more comically, than nutcase nadin.
Her humiliating misunderstanding of the word "parenteral", after days of preaching authoritatively about it, is in itself a Top 10 qualification.
And her preaching style is incomparable.
Nutcase nadin is to condescension as TomInTib is to lying.
They're similar in how the DUmb, brutish masses of DUmp democrats absorb their abuse, with only the rare rebel briefly raising his head.

I have a feeling that most of the posters that seem to support nadinnumbers only do so to encourage to keep posting. They laugh at her along with everyone else.

Yes the generators failed, AFTER THE TSUNAMI hit the plant. When the power initially went off, the reactors scramed and the diesels kicked on as planned. when the 40 ft wall of water flooded the generators, that is when the fecal matter hit the reciprocating blade. I am betting that the only reactor complex that was close enough to a large body of water is Calvert Cliff in MD. And with the epicenter located in VA inland and not on a fault under the Chesapeake Bay, a tidal wave would not have been in issue.
