Title: Quake rocks Washington area, felt on East Coast
Post by: Ballygrl on August 23, 2011, 01:39:48 PM
We felt it in NJ, I thought I was losing my mind, I was cleaning and sat down for a minute and the chair was shaking and I felt it on the floor and the pantry doors were opening and closing, I told my Husband to sit on the chair to see if he felt it and he said no, he said but he saw the pantry doors opening and closing. This was nothing like the last Earthquake we had in NJ a few years ago, we were close to that epicenter and we heard an explosion and the house shook.

WASHINGTON (AP) -- A 5.9 magnitude earthquake centered northwest of Richmond, Va., shook much of Washington, D.C., and was felt as far north as Rhode Island, New York City and Martha's Vineyard, Mass., where President Barack Obama is vacationing.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the earthquake was half a mile deep. Shaking was felt at the White House and all over the East Coast, as far south as Chapel Hill, N.C. Parts of the Pentagon, White House and Capitol were evacuated. There were no immediate reports of injuries.

It was centered near Louisa, Va., which is northwest of Richmond and south of Washington.

Holy crap. It's live on America Live w/ Megyn. Part of my family lives in VA, so I hope they're OK. They're worried about more tremors in NYC. Apparently, they felt it in the studio.

Good one. It fits so well with the rest of the excuses ObieWun has come up with.

I thought MLK was rolling over in his grave after finding out his statue was "Made in China".  Em, Em, Emm. Saving a few bucks on the MLK statue will probably come back to haunt someone in more ways than just this little rumble.    I mean not even good enough for an American Made statue?  Wow, this is embarrassing.

It was like being on a ship when it goes DIW.  Had underway flashbacks for a second....   :-)

I've been through a few.  Worst was Guam in 1992.  That was originally said to be 8.2, but they dropped it to 8.0 or 8.1, IIRC.

A 5.9 magnitude earthquake that was centered in Richmond, Virginia and felt as far as New York City and New England.

Fox News anchor Megyn Kelly reported at 2:30 pm that their bureau received information from a producer saying that a Captiol Hill Police officer was saying the Washington Monument may actually be tilting as a result of the earthquake.

I was passed out on a buddie's couch one bright Sunday morning in 92 when I was stationed at 32nd Street.  I slept through the first one but woke up for an aftershock.

That wasn't very fun....

I was stationed at Long Beach then and felt that one pretty well.  Then I was stationed at Point Loma in 94 when the Northridge quake hit.  It woke me up.

Yeah I asked if someone announced shift colors....underway today here.  So now I get to wait on Irene to smack us in eastern NC :banghead:

I remember one in college that was a minor one--4.1 or something like that.  Thing was, it was at 5:30 in the morning.  I remember thinking to myself, "What's that shaking? . . . Oh, it's just an earthquake."  Then, said message registered in my mind, and my eyes snapped open, with the thought, "Earthquake!"  And I was out of my room in a flash.

I was on I-87 coming back to Albany when WRVE mentioned an earthquake happening in DC.  My wife called me 20 minutes later and told me that her building in downtown Albany had been evacuated.  I told her that if I was her, I'd just go to the parking garage and go home (she didn't).  I pulled into the lot of my building in Albany and people were just filtering back in.  It was 2:35.  Ten minutes later, the guy who hired me (and is retiring at the end of September) came through, telling us, "Go home--the message just came down from on high."

Seeing that Irene is coming for the weekend, it should be interesting.

Yes it was.  Big Bear/Landers quake

The first one was a 7.2 or so

I was standing up at work talking to someone and we didn't feel a thing. My house shakes more than that when a coal train goes by and so does the person I was talking too.  Everyone else went nuts.

Then we had to evacuate the building.

I called my mom and she said that she thought it was a train.

I was wondering what we would do if the chemical leak sirens went off and we had to "shelter in place".   :-)

Shelter in Place?  Oh hell no!  That is why I have been saving up my runs all these years for.  You never know when you might need one!  :)
