This would have been posted sooner, but I worked OT until 1:30am and went to bed when I got home.
SO.... I was at work yesterday, minding my own business, when one of my union co-workers came up to me. I was annoyed with the way operations was running at my job. They are disorganized right now and really need a new system. The union guy over heard me talking to one of our other co-workers. He comes over and tells me that the company NEVER listens to their employees. That would have been fine if he stopped right there, but he continued to tell me that the company is ran by a bunch of rich Republicans. All I could do at that point is roll my eyes. I wanted to tell him, "I'd rather have the company ran by Republicans, because if Democrats were in charge, this place would be in bankruptcy." However, since I am a lady, I stay away from political talk in the workplace.
After his Republican rant, he walked away, but then turned around a few seconds later to add one more insult. He told me, without even knowing where I stand politically, that he would love to cook up the nastiest, stinkiest food (something to do with cabbage wrap, old cheese, baked beans and who-knows-what) and take it to the nearest Tea Party to throw at them "tea baggers". At this point, I said to him, "Oh my god, you are so bad", in my nicest, most sincere voice. This guy has no idea I am one of his enemies and it's so fun going to work these days.
The guy is so hateful and negative. Basically your typical liberal/union member. He always tells me he never tries anymore and he just wants to get fired so he can have the union fight the company.
Now when I read these silly bouncies on DU, I am sure they are happening. Minus the Republican/Tea Party member responses.
I am sorry to report that there were NO cops jumping out of bushes and the only applause I got all night was when a big group stopped holding up our line.

Just pull a liberal trick and sue the employer for harrassment.

I have a standing offer of giving people a hundred dollars if they can point out anything that a union has ever done to make the company more competitive or more successful.
I have never had to pay that off.

I don't think so. This guy is in his 60s (just a guess). I think he's just a bitter old man with nothing better to do with his life except spread his hate around.

It's a bad idea to buck the union in a union shop. You usually lose, and win or lose you probably suffer. At the least, your car has accidents in the parking lot. At its worst, they know where you live. It isn't worth it.

I totally understand where you are coming from. Either way, if I refuse to join their union, you know they will harass me anyway. It's a lose-lose situation. I can tolerate the Republican & Tea Party bashing, as long as it doesn't get personal and the guy is personally calling me a "tea bagger".

At least you have a choice of whether or not to join the union in your state, not so in New York. We can however vote them out entirely and it has been done but it's not easy, you have to make damn sure you have the majority on board with you. Not only do you have to fight the union but the NLRB will certainly get involved also. They are supposed to be impartial but they are anything but, truth be told they are the Supreme Soviet.
Your best course is to remain as neutral as possible and if Mr. Congeniality continues to be a problem hit him with a sexual harassment charge, it won't be a lie either being that his foul language should suffice. I don't know how that sort of thing goes over in your state but here in New York merely bringing such a charge is all it takes, always immediately fired so let his F-Bomb be his undoing and you'll be rid of him without ruffling union feathers and maintaining your ambiguity.

If I were working in a business in a right-to-work state, and the union won representation, I'd join the union.
I would view the union dues as an insurance premium against harrassment and possible violence.
If the union gets in, they've won that battle.
It's no different from a bar owner in some blue hellhole city who pays protection to the mob.
The union is a de facto mob. The only difference between the two is de jure.
Family responsibility is a lot more important than saving a few bucks from union extortion.
I suspect the rare decent people who belong to unions view it the same way.
No one ever said the world is fair.

I am personally not interested in joining a union. If I am unhappy with my job/management/insert reason, I'll find another job.
