Houston, we have a problem...

If I didn't see this on Drudge I'd think it was some kind of joke. Who the hell is running NASA these days???
Good grief! If things are this whacky at NASA I think maybe it's time Spock took the Captain aside for a little down time and quietly assume command.  :mental:

Can't be any worse than the garbage Paul Krugman (http://www.metafilter.com/106635/Wag-the-Dalek) comes up with.

The Outer Limits episode, The Architects of Fear is built around faking an alien invasion in order to stop nuclear armageddon. In a recent interview, Paul Krugman of the New York Times proposed a fake alien invasion to stimulate the economy.

NASA has absolutely NOTHING to do with this paper.

Aliens May Strike Humans To Save The Galaxy: Study

Global warming may not remain merely 'global' anymore, as a new study suggests its cosmic impact.

Beyond endangering the earthly inhabitants, humans may have posed a serious threat to the entire galaxy, possibly prompting aliens to destroy humanity in order to end global warming and save the rest of the galaxy from being contaminated as well.

 :panic:

You know of all global warming related theories I like this one the most, due to how crazy it is.

Well, gracious, that sounds kinda bad. But what if the aliens like hot places? Wouldn't that make them want to keep us around? Maybe, if global warming does exist, they are the ones doing it and not us.

I don't think it matters. We'll just get Bugs to get the Illudium Q-36 Explosive Space Modulator from Marvin and use it against any anti-global warming aliens.

Yeah, if you're gonna go for nuts, go big or go home.

I guess Vesta will come in here with a way back story about aliens soon  :panic:

You would think that with the billions spent on the space program they could have at least bought a few rolls of tinfoil.

That was actually one of Krugman's more lucid thoughts.

Here I am Gina, and I have some whacked out thoughts.

Aliens don't have to come from the stars to attack us, we have millions of them crossing into our land every year.

They like those little green men from out of space do not speak our language,  they come from a foreign land and have to be taught how to  exist in America.

What the heck is a toilet to them, how to use it,  running water in a kitchen or a shower with hot water is new to them. Heat in the winter with a  do hickey to control the heat on the wall is alarming, as is a refrigerator to store food.

[ worked with a Asian that needed the day off to be at home so the --[  FIRE could be hooked up ]

There was no word in his language for electricity.

These space aliens would be much like our own earthlings that travel to far away places.    Have no fear the first time the little green men stop up a toilet,   they will be on their way home.

That could still work out 'not necessarily to our advantage,' if we're the toilet.

Been thinking on this for a while and as a avid reader of Sci-fiction in my younger years I am trying to figure out what all this means to the scientists today.

We send space probes to planets we can not in fact go to, as humans yet, so who is to say some very different species from humans is not doing the same.???

Little green things that have an uncanny resembles to the human form, a head, eyes on both side of the nose, arms and legs---  is this not the height of human EGO that we believe only intelligent life form must all be built exactly like us---we do put wings on paintings of angles and represent God to look like a grandfather type person.

I am not sure man physically will ever go into space much further then we have done so now. It will be hundreds of years for us to get out there into deep space, so we sent robots to go before us and see what we as humans at this time cannot experience.

Mr. Tanker, we cannot physically go to the depths of the Mariana Trench but we can develop tools to see what is down there on our own planet.  There are to some estimates of over a million life forms on earth that we are just now discovering hidden so far in places we only know about by discovery.

Our planet is slow to give up its secrets, some may never be found.

For scientist to put any scenario of danger from off planet beings and attribute the human mind set of conquer, rob, to other species in pure imagination. The reflex of our brains to try to make sense out of a cloud and put the jumble of what we see into something recognisable and familiar.-------We in America see a human face in a full moon, the Chinese see a rabbit.

I feel the threat to earth may be the spoors that are encased in the space dust that filters in, these are alian to our planet and could be a threat.  The Robots  we sent to  Mars may in fact carry some bacteria from earth that could change that planet after a thousand years.

Hard to imagine for me that God duplicated Earth thousands of times and sat back to watch evolution take place and all results were the same on each planet.

It says at the bottom of the article:

"This article was amended on 19 August 2011. The subhead said the report was "for Nasa". This has been corrected."

What the article actually says is:

"This highly speculative scenario is one of several described by a Nasa-affiliated scientist and colleagues at Pennsylvania State University"

People at universities discuss all kind of unlikely things.  One of those people in one of those discussions happened to be a a Nasa-affiliated scientist.  I think this story has been blown way out of context.

I think a much more interesting discussion is the likelihood of alien civilizations anywhere in the galaxy.  Thirty years ago lots of mainstream scientists thought there were probably many civilizations out there.  More recent thinking is that they are probably very very rare, or may not exist at all.  This is more of a scientific than a political subject, and I'm not sure if it would be of interest on this forum.

I beg to differ with you Ron. Unfortunately Science advances at the pace that Politics, and Religion of the time will allow.

All three = power to control others, believe me the struggle in Religion and Science is more rough and tumble then the dirty tricks of Politicians.

All three are linked to each other, if we found life out there would the Scientists be allowed to expose the information to the world??

Panic in the Vatican, how to explain this to the faithfull.

Panic among the Hundreds of Non-Catholic denominations.

The politics of the worlds leaders, country's will rise and fall under those who wish to use this to their advantage. Desertions of the Military to return home to their family's, few bothering to work or plant the fields, few will want to do more then follow Foxy Loxie into the cave---the sky is falling.

All the Christians will mistrust any leader to try to calm the people down.  Big run on Bibles and all will be able to quote chapter and verse of the Revelations on the Anti Christ.

Muslims will now have no reason to not fight to wipe out all who do not worship Allah.

One hell of a mess------

Who knows we may have been contacted years ago and the big three, Science, Politics and Religion, are working to keep this a secret until humanity can handle the shock.
