The Outer Limits episode, The Architects of Fear is built around faking an alien invasion in order to stop nuclear armageddon. In a recent interview, Paul Krugman of the New York Times proposed a fake alien invasion to stimulate the economy.
Aliens May Strike Humans To Save The Galaxy: Study
Global warming may not remain merely 'global' anymore, as a new study suggests its cosmic impact.
Beyond endangering the earthly inhabitants, humans may have posed a serious threat to the entire galaxy, possibly prompting aliens to destroy humanity in order to end global warming and save the rest of the galaxy from being contaminated as well.

:panic:
You know of all global warming related theories I like this one the most, due to how crazy it is.
I guess Vesta will come in here with a way back story about aliens soon :panic:
Can't be any worse than the garbage Paul Krugman (http://www.metafilter.com/106635/Wag-the-Dalek) comes up with.

These space aliens would be much like our own earthlings that travel to far away places. Have no fear the first time the little green men stop up a toilet, they will be on their way home.
That could still work out 'not necessarily to our advantage,' if we're the toilet.
I think a much more interesting discussion is the likelihood of alien civilizations anywhere in the galaxy. Thirty years ago lots of mainstream scientists thought there were probably many civilizations out there. More recent thinking is that they are probably very very rare, or may not exist at all. This is more of a scientific than a political subject, and I'm not sure if it would be of interest on this forum.
