If the hippies had won that struggle in the 60s we’d live in a more humane world today.

If the hippies had prevailed, if our society had followed their lead, we'd have a world much closer to being ecologically balanced. We'd have mature alternative energy technologies and organic food grown on family farms would predominate. We'd likely be at peace in a peaceful world and we'd be actively engaged in helping other nations help themselves in purely benign relations with our fellow earthlings. Though the world would certainly still be imperfect, we'd be masters of diplomacy and things would be generally better in this world for virtually everyone. We might have fewer millionaires and billionaires but trust me nobody would miss them.
The important point is that we would not be killing each other - we'd be taking care of each other.
.....................
Oh I know, I'm hopelessly naïve. People couldn't possibly be good to each other. How ridiculous. I should just grow up and face the brutal fact that we are nothing but ignorant and mean-spirited savages.
That kind of thinking is what has brought us to this point. We had choices. Peace, love and understanding are the choices the hippies urged. Fear, war and empty-headed consumerism were the choices forced down our throats by the rightwing. It wasn't inevitable - and it wasn't us. It could've all been very different.

It's amazing to me, how the kaput primitive still think this is 1957 or something.
We've been in the hippie Age of Aquarius since the mid-1970s; the traditional "establishment" dominated by the old white Anglo-Saxon male Protestant hasn't shown any sign of life for more than a generation now.
We've been in the golden age for a long time now; by 1980, everything on the hippie agenda from the '60s had either been enacted into law, or become socially acceptable.
And now the freeloadingest generation is withering away; not quite fast enough for some of us, but it's going.
If anyone doubts, they should read the weekly Morbidity and Mortality Report, which I've been reading since the late 1980s. Of course, it's a lot of complicated numbers and footnotes and hard going, and doesn't break hippies down into a specific group.
However, since the late 1980s, the Report has consistently showed an increasing number of people dying in their 50s and early 60s, 10-15-20 years before the proverbial three-score-and-ten; people tending to be in the sedentary occupations or no occupation; desk-sitters, governmental and "non"-profit organizational jobs, "activists," non-veterans of military service, freeloaders.
No wonder "free medical care for all" is the clarion-call of the now ageing, balding, potbellying, wrinkled hippies; having refused to acknowledge God, and believing this life is "all there is," they're hoping, desperately, for science, medicine, and technology to keep them alive forever.
Science, medicine, and technology are useful tools, but they can't do the impossible.
It used to be that the hippies thought they could be young forever; nowadays, they're willing to settle for merely staying alive forever.
Alas! the dinosaurs! alas! doomed for extinction!
The bonfire's a modest one, mostly full of senior-citizen primitives yelling slogans from the now-long-ago '60s.
-
I suppose that one could refuse to acknowledge God . . .
But, I'd rather live as if God Existed, and maybe find out that He didn't, than live as if God didn't exist, and find out that He Did.

The hippie philosophy is based on denying natural and rational human behavior and human nature. It is pretty easy to sustain the philosophy if everyone stays stoned all the time. Unfortunately for the hippies, staying stoned all the time is not possible. If it is attempted, death comes very early. At best, it is a short and artificial existence in practice.
This is why the hippie dream will never be realized. Normal people will not get stoned. Stoners cannot stay stoned all the time, and death quickly finds those who try. In the end, human nature and reality always win out.

Hippiedom is like biofuels; each one can make a place for itself and harbor the delusion that it's a big deal, but in reality it just a marginal thing surviving on sufferance and it will only last as long as it's too small a part of the total picture for much of anyone to really take it seriously.

Losers....the 60s are over and you lost. Grow up, take a fn shower and get over it.

It was part of the campaign to discredit the movement.
Don't fall for it.
Right. Former CIA, my ass.

Just more foolish thinking from those who will never grow up.
All the smoked up feel good nonsense they yearn for will never grow food or build a house that will stand.
They dream of a life without care or responsibility but still want all that care and responsibility bring and somehow believe it will all be.
They are worthless parasites.

Actually, no, it didn't.
I'm assuming you're referring to the link provided by the kaput primitive.
I've found that when copying-and-pasting stuff with links in the post, the link looks like it works here, but really it doesn't.
So I got out the boat and rowed over to Skins's island to check the link given to the Kossacks by the kaput primitive, and it works there.
I'm not sure why this works this way, but there you have it.

Oh puhleeze, what "struggle"? The struggle to crawl out of bed at the crack of noon, pick through the ashtray for roaches, and scrape up some spare change for a Moon Pie? That's basically what the "movement" was for most hippies. That and listening to music and perhaps some indiscriminate sex if one was lucky. Mouthing a few slogans once in a while if you were really energetic.
Real change doesn't come from laying about telling everyone how the world should be. Real change doesn't come from from marching up and down the street with signs. Real change doesn't come from warbling folk songs. It comes from those who get up early and roll their sleeves up and do the hard work of producing things for other people, innovating and creating things that improve life, engaging others through a legitimate political process, shedding their blood to fight tyranny and spread freedom.
All of those things you named - energy technologies, organic food, world peace - you actually think they could have been brought about by a movement the prime goal of which was to expend as little energy as possible? It takes effort, long sleepless nights, big money, big risk, responsibility and accountability. The hippy hordes were going to supply that? Put down the bong, son.

What a bunch of naive, pathetic bullshit that's really nothing more than a has-been pining for the good old days.

Kind of hard to follow the lead of people who aren't going anywhere. It's pretty easy to sit around dreaming of utopia when daddy and mommy are paying the bills and buying you that college education. If your idea of "alternative" energy means running around in a panic and forcing people to buy light bulbs that are MORE dangerous to the environment than the ones we currently use (if one breaks around young children or pregnant women they have to leave IMMEDIATELY...if it falls on a carpet, even the section it fell on needs to be cut away), way to save the planet, buck-o! Oh and then there's always "biofuels" which we also had to rush into. The poor can't afford basic staples, but by golly you had such noble intentions so that just makes it all okay.
Let's interject just a little more reality here...how do you suppose these family farms are going to be able to grow enough food to feed 300 million Americans, the majority of whom don't live on farms? Organic farming is very labor intensive and much more expensive. You people bitch about the cost of food now and how poor children don't have enough to eat, how the hell do you expect them to afford "organic" food? What about the times of the year where we have to import most of our produce...will we be telling other countries how to live as well? Whether it's meat, dairy, or produce "organic", "free-range" will always be a niche market. A banana is a banana...take the peel off and the inside is as "organic" as the one selling for $1.29 a pound.
Would that peace be before or after we forced other nations to adopt our "bio-organic-free range-fuel-food" standards? I can understand how easy it is for you to have kumbaya pipe dreams when you've never had to put your own ass on the line, but you might want to think on this a little more. There always have been and always will be good and evil, birth and death, light and dark. It's that whole yin/yang thing...I'd think people as enlightened as you folks try to convince others you are you'd understand this. Even a 2 year old who has his toy snatched away by a bigger playmate has a better understanding of human nature than you.
Do you honestly believe if hippies would've existed when Hitler was exterminating his "fellow earthlings" they could've convinced him to turn off the ovens, leave Denmark, and send all those concentration camp survivors home with a candy bar and a handshake? I know you don't care about the Jews, but he was killing gays too and they're the left's pet of the month. But, who knows, right? I mean that hippie revolution worked out so well for the Cambodians.
What do you do when North Korea invades South Korea and the south doesn't have the means to take care of themselves? Do we just say...sorry OUR peace is more important than your lives or freedom...we'd rather just pretend everything is wonderful! What about places like Somalia where women and children were starving...food literally ripped from their hands? Do we just say...sorry OUR peace is more important than you feeding your kids this week. Besides, once you're all dead the world will be peaceful again. What about places like Afghanistan where the lives of women and girls was about as close to hell on earth as you can get? Do we just say...sorry OUR peace is more important than you having to live your lives in abject terror. I bet it doesn't feel too peaceful to be stoned or burned to death or to be a 9 year old girl being held down while someone cuts off your clitoris and sews up your vagina.
The important point is that we would not be killing each other - we'd be taking care of each other.
See above

Oh I know, I'm hopelessly naive. People couldn't possibly be good to each other. How ridiculous. I should just grow up and face the brutal fact that we are nothing but ignorant and mean-spirited savages.
No, WE aren't but there are plenty of them in the world and we're either at their mercy or we accept the fact that we have to deal with them. However, the world WOULD be better off if you all would just grow up. You're all either seething with rage, or dreamily pretending how full of love the whole world would be if everyone else on the planet (well, except the Palestinians, Cubans, Islamic terrorists, communists, etc.) lived exactly how you imagine. Might want to be careful there, though because that utopia you're planning sounds an awful lot like Heaven.
You still have choices. YOU don't have to live in fear...luckily you live in a country where you have the right to defend yourself. YOU live in a country where braver men and women than you or I stand ready to defend us at a moment's notice. YOU live in a country where you can choose to NOT join the military. YOU can join organizations that protest against war, your government, the military and not have to worry about being hauled away in the middle of the night (I know you all dream about this in your quest for ultimate victimhood, but if it were really happening you'd already be gone). YOU can spend your free time volunteering at a battered women's shelter (now there's a way to really help someone find peace). YOU live in a country where you can buy a little piece of land with 10 of your favorite patchouli-drenched, organic, free love orgy-mates and have a commune. You could grow your own organic food, raise farm animals that you won't eat, sing Imagine every night while passing around the bong. Hell, you can even DRESS like one of the farm animals. YOU, who have the wisdom of Buddha and the peaceful spirit of Gandhi can choose NOT to be roped into consumerism. YOU can choose to buy only what you need (of course you'd have to quit whining on the Internet because a computer is definitely part of that whole consumer thing...plus it's kind of hard to turn it on when you don't have electricity on Utopia Farm and Free Love Institute). Perhaps if you were willing to lead by example instead of always just talking about it...maybe you could just move to Venezuela...I hear the weather's great, there's no violence, and all your needs are taken care of.

Great work, gardencatz; in fact, awesome work.
I don't see how the primitives and sub-primitives can miss it; we've BEEN in the Age of Aquarius the past thirty years, and now it's winding down.
Everything, all things, on the hippie agenda of the '60s was legal, or at least socially acceptable, by 1980.
My God, someone who died in 1961 and came back to life today would be shocked by the changes.
We've ALREADY BEEN in the Age of Aquarius, and now we're exiting it; it's dying.
It's dawning a new age right now; I have no idea what sort of age it's going to be, other than a reasonable speculation it's going to be a better one than this dying one, this Golden Age of Aquarius, has been. Generation X (those born either 1961 or 1964, take your pick up to those born 1980), the children of the hippies, has been emasculated, mired down; however, I have high hopes for Generation Y (those born after 1980).
It kills me, rolling on the floor laughing my ass off, whenever a primitive or sub-primitive rails against "the establishment."
I laugh my insides out.
The old hippies, Democrats, liberals, primitives, and sub-primitives ARE "the establishment," although now a rapidly-decaying one. WE--normal decent civilized people--are the "anti-establishment."
It kills me, rolling on the floor laughing my ass off, whenever a primitive or sub-primitive talks about "we need a revolution."
I laugh my insides out.
We already had the revolution, either in the elections of 1994 when nearly two generations of the Democrat "lock" on Congress was finally shattered, or the presidential election of 2000, when Alphonse Capote Gore tried to steal Florida and failed.
We've already had the revolution.
The mid-term elections of 2006 were the "counter-revolution," and we all know the life-span of "counter-revolutions." That was the Gotterdamerung of the old hippies, their last shot to grasp power, and while they did, it's a weak and tentative hold at best; soon it'll slip out of their hands forever.
If they ever add on to the Sistine Chapel in Rome, and decide to put more murals up there on the ceiling, I frankly suggest one of ancient decrepit balding ill potbellied hippies frothingly and angrily raising their fists up into the sky at their false gods of science, medicine, and technology, their false gods which failed to keep them young, which failed to keep them alive.
-
You guys are overanalyzing this.
They yearn for the hippie days because that was the last time any of them got laid.
A high-5 for that, BadCat, perhaps we are overanalyzing.
It could also be that they yearn for the old hippie days because that was when the Old Man and the Old Lady paid their bills for them. Now there's hardly anybody left from the Finest Generation, to pay their bills, and Generation X doesn't have the means to do so.
-

Maybe true, but only if you limit that to "by a human."

Hippies cause most of the modern day problems. Just imagine how far modern day civilization would have advanced if not for these modern day hebephrenic Luddites? We might even have Mr. Fusions powering our cars making recycling a matter of convenience. Who knows?
Hippies are the problem and have never fostered any solutions whatsoever. The only value hippies have is giving us something to laugh at.
