Title: Da Bears!
Post by: NHSparky on August 13, 2011, 09:58:53 AM: We haz dem. Scoobie found the evidence this morning after I'd already left for work.

The bird feeder pole (not a small one, mind you) was bent all the way to the ground and this is what was left of the bird feeder...

Bear hair caught on nails in the torn apart hutch was the forensic evidence. Been waiting for it to return with trip wires and motion detectors set and the shotgun loaded with 00 buck! Think its knows better cause its been almost a month and no return.

And where did I say that they could kind sir?? I just said they can do considerable damage. Unlike bears, they have hands(front paws)like humans and are quite clever.

I don't know about raccoons doing that, but I'll bet some of the DUmmie wymen can do it when they "pole dance".

The coons, on the other hand, get into everything, even into stuff I don't keep locked down and shut up on my back porch.

They are awfully brave, too. I had one two weeks ago come up and try to steal the cat food dish off of the porch, while I was out there!

We are down to using only cream colored plastic cat food dishes. The raccoons, for whatever reason, will steal any metal, blue, and especially red dishes we leave outside.

no i don't think so either....They only weigh up to 30lbs depending on where you read....They will get into garbage cans

Ate it, apparently. Scoobs found the birdfeeder about 15-20 feet away from where it hung, and it had been full of seed the day before, with no scattered seed.

We did the safe thing and alerted the neighbors. The gentleman behind us has a game camera, and is setting it up to see if the bear comes by again.

Also, the dogs caught some sort of scent that drove them a bit batty. Not a raccoon. Now that I think about it, I saw some scattered trash yesterday morning down the road about 1/2 mile from where I live. Put two and two together, it wouldn't surprise me that a bear would be going through it before the trash pickup Friday morning. This is the time of year they start fattening up for winter.

Actually, we took the "long" way up. Rt 93 to the kangamangas (sp?) highway. We go up to NH every year. My wife's father lives in Plaistow.

It was our first time in North Conway, though. What a cool place!

My dad lives down the road from your father-in-law...he lives in Atkinson.....

CENTER OSSIPEE, N.H. (AP) â€” Police in New Hampshire say seven people were hurt â€” two critically â€” when a car hit a bear, triggering a chain-reaction crash involving three vehicles.

The 225-pound male black bear was killed in the accident late Sunday on Route 16 in Center Ossipee.

Police Sgt. Robert King, Jr., says a northbound car hit the bear and that a Lincoln Town Car headed in the other direction swerved to avoid it, colliding with another vehicle that was headed north.

Police say 44-year-old motorist James Iannuzzi, of Boston, and 44-year-old Brian Berglund, of Winthrop, Mass., who were traveling in the Lincoln, were hospitalized in critical condition.

A spokeswoman for Maine Medical Center in Portland said Monday that Berglund is now in serious condition.

Four people were in the third vehicle.

Damn I hate bears, the subject gets me tied up in knots.

This area was bear free for years, as I was told as a kid there was nothing in the woods that would harm me. This led to me in TENN. wandering about the woods bare foot and people thinking I was totally nuts.

Snakes, Cotton Mouth, Rattlers as big as a small tree, then the Chiggers in the fields and Lord knows what else.

So I come home to the safe New Englang woods of my youth. Heck there are now Rattle snakes , Bears and Coy dogs, now we have Coyotes and Canadian Wolves moving in. Moose in rutting season is a danger to people and some times their cars when a Moose decides to Mate with it.

This is just a gap between generations, what we as kids did is now off limits to the kids of today. Sad but this is the way things go in in life.

My Generation lived with little fear, we could run wild in the woods, walk down the street with no fear of strangers, our school teachers were not seducing the kids, the only thing that has not changed is those damn Bears.

They are still as nasty eating machines as ever----any bear within sight of of a populated area needs to GO. One way or another, darn I hate bears.

Sparky make sure Scoobs has a loaded shot gun by the back door, just in case the kids are outside and a hungry bear makes it into your back yard.

One other nasty beast in our area is he Fisher Cat, only in he last few years have we been able to photograph them, darn little beast's.

We who hunt in the north woods have at one time or another at night hard them Scream, sounds like a woman on fire , raises the hair on the back of your neck and gives your butt a bad pucker.

At a Cat Show that was local, a couple people came down from about 30-50 miles north that made a living building outside in closed areas that House cats could go out safe from the fisher cats.

It had been 30 years since I heard the screams of those buggers at night headed off to go smelt fishing.
now today I can pull up information on the sucker but back then few people knew what I was talking about.

These little dudes will crash though a window glass to get to a house cat, what is worse, a fisher cat or a bear---I vote for the bear that can take down 3-4 grown men, the bear takes them by surprise and even if armed the shock of the attack gives the bear the advantage.

Oh, but the turkeys, OTOH...makes getting a bow that much more tempting, just to say I took one out from my back porch. Most of the state has a shotgun season from 10-14 October, but archery season goes something like the 15th of September until the 15th of December. You only get a chance to get one from either, so if I get a shotgun license, I can't get an archery license, therefore if I don't get a turkey in that five days, I'm pretty much SOL.

I've gotten a few Toms and Hens (both are legal here). Ever eaten one? It's (as my wife said) turkey turkey The flavor is amazingly good. The last couple I got, I breasted, I don't bother with the dark meat, it's too tough. They look wierd cleaned too.

Yeah, I wouldn't worry about it too much. 10-14 October is Monday-Friday, the bastards.

And I'm not about to rush out and buy a huge compound bow just for a shot at a bird where the only decent part of it is the breast, and that's if it's smoked.

Yup--hens and toms are both legal during the fall hunt. Only toms are legal in the spring.

I just hope I don't have some dipshit hunters shooting up the place behind the house like I did a couple of years ago.

We have so far no Grizzly bears in our area but lots of black bears. It is a coincidence that a day or so ago I watched an interview on the Today Show with a young woman from Montania that was attacked by a black bear. Huge claw marks on her chest and her left arm all messed up.

She told that to survive a black bear was the opposite of a Grizzly bear. with a Grizzly it is advised to play dead, with a black bear to open your coat to appear larger, stand your ground and advance on the beast in a threatening manor. Stomp your feet wave your arms throw what ever you can find, back pack, rocks etc.

My local gun shop sells big cans of bear spray, also small air horns, The air horn serves two purposes, one to scare the heck out of a bear at the close quarters of attack and to alert people in the area of a problem.

I bought my Mother a couple of these air horns a few years ago when the Canadian Geese came to shelter on her lawn. Hell of a mess they make, interesting birds but they are really nasty huge birds. These birds had 2-3 dozen in the flock and she had tried beating on a pot with a spoon to scare them off but they kept coming back.

Mom finally tried the air horn and just one small blast sent them away for days. Mom was afraid of disturbing the neighbors at first but found when the buggers came back what fun it was to crack open the door and give them a blast.

A control issue for her at her age, this gave her some confidence that perhaps this was about the only control she has over her life at this point. I believe she secretly was happy to see them so she could sneak up on them.
