You know, in the country in which I was raised, Rick Perry and Michelle Bachmann would be . . . .   Updated at 9:23 PM

. . . . nowhere NEAR a presidential campaign.

There was a presidential candidate once who was a Roman Catholic. He had to spend a great deal of time trying to convince his country's citizens that he would not allow that to influence his presidency. And he wasn't even all that great a Catholic. I just can't imagine that a swaggering asshole who holds a public religious revival featuring the most extreme of his country's religious extremists as a way to kick off his campaign, a man who endorses the idea of having his state secede from the union, a man who walks around firing handguns, I can't imagine that man ever getting to a primary, let alone a campaign.

Neither can I imagine a woman who is religious zealot, a woman married to another religious zealot, a woman who has a questionable degree from a questionable university that preaches questionable philosophy that is arguably far out of the mainstream, a woman who is married to a man who has a business performing quack cures, I can't imagine that woman coming into the same room as a presidential candidate might enter.

Yet here we are, in early 21st Century America, witnessing those very things.

You know, I look around and I SWEAR this is the same place where I grew up. But I know if can't be. Not with this sort of shit happening. Not when I hear the news telling me that the man and the woman described above are taken seriously as presidential candidates.

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=439x1724512

And the country in which I was raised, we were always told that anyone can grow up to be president, then in 2008 that was proven true when the community organizer with a 5 minute Senate career (where he voted present most often) was elected. We then watched the man squander our triple A credit rating, meanwhile blaming everyone but himself for the financial mess his policies, and his party brought on us. So Stinky, Dude, if you think Perry and Bachmann could do any worse than what we have now, you truly are crazy. Elmer Fudd would do a better job than the clown in the White House now.

You know, since this clown dude who smells bad voted for a "community organizer" with no experience and no traceable background AND will vote for him again even after seeing the destruction that his candidate has caused, I really don't think he has displayed the political intelligence to judge Perry, Bachmann, or anyone else.

I saw this campfire over there, and decided not to bring it over, just because it was Stinky's creation.  While I was watching this campfire, Stinky spotted me out of the corner of his eye, and came running after me to try to toss it into my boat.  As I quickly rowed away from the island, I barked, "No way, dude.  No way."

Living Faith [Paperback]
Jimmy Carter

In this rich and very intimate spiritual autobiography, the former president shares his living Christian faith. Carter's deep faith is rooted in his family and community, and he traces the growth and development of his faith through his career in the Navy and various political offices, and through his work with Habitat for Humanity (which builds housing for poor Americans) and the Carter Center (an international peacemaking organization). Carter also discusses the impact that Soren Kierkegaard and Reinhold Niebuhr have had on his life. With engaging humor and self-effacement, Carter shares his personal stories of the lessons of faith he has learned as a son, husband and father. In addition, he shares his sense of justice and the ways his faith has affected his actions and personal lifestyle. Carter's book is an enjoyable look into the life of a man engaged in living out his faith in the public eye.

The Dude does NOT abide in this case.

Guess he better hide in his hole after the realization that pretty much ALL presidents up to this one have been God-fearing Christians to some degree or another.

Threads like this happen when you have minimal historical knowledge.  You can condemn the Fundies while forgetting that just about all presidents, including their heroes have expressed an abiding faith in Christ.  Indeed, "atheist" was considered such an epithet that John Adams' supporters used it against Thomas Jefferson.

Yep.  Those horrible, frightening fundies have been running this country since we were still a part of England...and the country was in much better shape for all that time.

Liar.

Edit:

Quote from: From the beloved Wiki:

Jeremiah Alvesta Wright, Jr. (born September 22, 1941) is Pastor Emeritus of Trinity United Church of Christ (TUCC), a megachurch in Chicago exceeding 6,000 members.[1] In early 2008, Wright retired after 36 years as the Senior Pastor of his congregation and no longer has daily responsibilities at the church.[2][3]

Following retirement, Wright's beliefs and preaching were scrutinized when segments from his sermons were publicized in connection with the presidential campaign of Barack Obama, including his contention that the attacks of September 11, 2001 were proof that "America's chickens are coming home to roost" and "...not God Bless America. God damn America."[4] Obama reacted to the Wright controversy in a speech entitled "A More Perfect Union."[5]

Wright subsequently defended himself in a speech before the NAACP on April 27, 2008, in which he indicated that he was not "divisive" but "descriptive," and that the black church experience, like black culture, was "different" but not "deficient".[6] After the election, Wright was again the center of controversy when he suggested on one occasion that "them Jews" were keeping him from reaching President Obama.

As I said, DUde.. Liar.

Huh?!?  I join the others in asking what country you grew up in?

If anything, it might have been that way in the home in which you were raised.  It wouldn't take much convincing to get me to believe that your parents were common trash.

Oh dear, looks like Stinky needs to revisit his history. It wasn't because athiests wouldn't like his Catholicism affecting his presidency; it was because protestants assumed (rightly, to my mind) that a man's deepest held beliefs do necessarily spill over into his governing, and because of their opposition to the Apostolic See.

In other words, it was to people like Rep. Bachmann and Gov. Perry that the appeal had to be made.

Very, very Progressive. Shit all over a woman candidate. Possibly the first woman President.

Stay classy Stinky.

Enough on politics, Vinnie.

Were you able to check out the panther for us?

She's right there in your neighborhood.

She's a democrat voter just like you and Spunkly...invite her to dinner and let us know how it goes.

Stinky the Dude is afraid to invite UGP over for dinner. Sparkly will find her/him/it to be more of a man than Stinky and poor Stinky will be kicked to the curb.

Doesn't Sparkly take a "friend" down the street for trips to Europe, to leave the Dude to clean out the cat box while they're gone?  Maybe he doesn't want to have to pay for a third wheel to go on those trips (and it not be him).
