The "officially" sanctioned photo shows President Obama saluting the coffins of the Navy SEALS. (not shown) (White House photo)
When the coffins of the fallen Navy SEALS came back to US soil, the Pentagon and the White House closed the event to the press.

That's understandable. After all, the George W. Bush administration made similar restrictions for such ceremonies, although President Obama overturned the policy.

The press complied as well, but when the White House released a photo yesterday of  Obama saluting the coffins at the ceremony, they raised their eyebrows.

When Associated Press reporter Ben Feller asked about the photo today at the White House Press briefing, Carney answered:

"The reason we were able to release a photo, is that it was carefully done so that none of the transfer cases that contained remains were in the picture . . . we were able put those restrictions and control the White House photographer so that the photograph that we released does not cause any of those problems."

This is bullshit. Showing Obama saluting the coffins of the dead is no different than showing the coffins. imo

You can bet your ass that the SEALs wouldn't have wanted it. Why the hell would a "White House photographer" be there anyway?  :censored:

Another ****ing photo op for asswipe.  :banghead: :fuelfire:  :mad:

Power of the presidency, obviously.

At work last night, I read an article about the media restrictions to this. The article said that because the remains were "co-mingled" into different caskets, the press could not be there. The article said that not only do the caskets contain body parts of the Americans, but also those of the Afghanis. The forensics labs at Dover will be sorting through each casket to identify each part, so that each family will receive only their family member, and the Afghanis will be returned to Afghanistan.

A service member's family must sign off on allowing pictures, video, press, etc, to be done when their loved one comes into Dover (or anywhere).

According to the article, because of the co-mingling, not all families had signed off. It also said that the government could not sign permission.

Obviously that doesn't apply to Obama's White House releasing pictures.  :bird:

If it was one of my family members in those caskets, I'd really be pissed.

So basically, Carney is saying it was all about Obama, not about the SEALS and Rangers.  Nice.

Don't forget Obama made a very early morning trip to greet returning bodies for a photo op a while back, too.

Barack Obama meets coffins of soldiers killed in Afghanistan
Commander-in-chief makes late-night trip to Dover air force base to receive and honour remains of 18 killed in the conflict

Barack Obama last night came face to face with the true cost of the war in Afghanistan, as the remains of 18 US soldiers and drug enforcement agents were unloaded from a military aircraft and returned to US soil.

The unscheduled, late-night visit to Dover air force base came as the president debates whether to meet General Stanley McChrystal's request for tens of thousands more troops to fight Taliban and al-Qaida insurgents in Afghanistan. Since taking office, Obama has already ordered more than 21,000 additional troops into the country.

The fallen troops, whose return Obama observed, died in two separate incidents on Monday: a Chinook helicopter carrying seven soldiers and three drug enforcement agents crashed and eight soldiers were in a vehicle struck by an improvised explosive device in the Arghandab river valley.

The total of 55 US troops killed in Afghanistan this month have made it the deadliest month in the eight-year war. The US military has endured a brutal few months, testing the nation's resolve to pursue a war that Obama says is essential for its security. In all, 902 US troops and 222 British troops have died in the war.

Do you really believe he was saluting coffins? They probably (Whitehouse photog) took numerous pictures from all angles and with all types of backdrops then released what they thought was the best photo.

By saying, "Piss on those families, it's all about ME!"

Got it.

Earlier the Pentagon released video of the crash.  Is there any difference between that and showing coffins? I would think the crash scene video would be just as upsetting to the families.

Not necessarily if the deceased and the family hated obastard.

Hypocrisy much, Mister Carney?

ARTICLE FROM TIME MAGAZINE, 2001--written by JAY CARNEY (http://www.time.com/time/columnist/carney/article/0,9565,171496,00.html#ixzz1UeIAiY87)

A Vacationing Bush Works Hard for His Photo-Ops
By Jay Carney
August 16, 2001

<snip>

The image-makers who advise George W. Bush got what they wanted this week: a photograph, taken by the Associated Press and published in seemingly every newspaper in the country, of the President lifting a telephone pole as he "helped maintain" a nature trail in Colorado's Rocky Mountain National Park.

<snip>

The President's most glaring weakness is the public's perception that he is pro-business and anti-environment. Given the high marks he's getting for his overall job performance and his deft handling of the stem cell research question, some might even say it's his only weakness. The question now is whether a few photo-ops will fix the problem — or just make it worse.

CBS Early Show interviewed the parents of one of the SEALS, Aaron Vaughn from TN, this morning.

I only saw the replay, but they were not happy about this photo.

Surprisingly, there is nothing on their website about this interview, though all the other ones are.
