Glitch at pump adds to soaring gas costs

Angry about the price of gas? Just imagine paying for gas you don't get.
Some alert customers have noticed it over the years: a pump that seems to hesitate a second when the lever is squeezed. Anywhere from 2 to 6 cents tick off before the rush of gasoline starts. That's what happens with a common, hard-to-diagnose and mostly ignored problem with the check valve, which is supposed to make sure gas flows at the same time the price meter starts.
But even if your gas pump works, it can still be off as much as $5 for every fill-up. Tests by local regulators allow a pump to charge as much as 6 cents more than the gas delivered in a 5-gallon test.
Don't blame the gas guys. Even consumer advocates say retailers may be losing as often as customers, and no one appears able to rig the meters. But the small check valve at the end of the multibillion-dollar industry just wears out, and often goes unnoticed for months.
Bob Wolfram knew something was wrong when the pump he used in Davenport, Iowa, showed he put 2 more gallons of gas into his tank than the tank holds.
"I was low, but it wasn't negative," said Wolfram, a 54-year-old engineer.

This is a brand-new bonfire, just lit.
In Nebraska, all gasoline pumps have a little sticker that advises purchasers about a minute-but-unresolvable error in the meter readings; it's done by teaspoons-per-gallon.
A -6 sticker, for example, indicates that a gallon of gasoline is being measured, actually, at one gallon minus six-tens of a teaspoon. A +8 sticker, for another example, indicates that a gallon of gasoline is being measured, actually, at one gallon plus eight-tenths of a teaspoon.
It's no big deal, and doesn't add up to shit, lying titty primitive.

I didn't know those gas pumps were running Diebold software.
COOL!

Years ago I ran a small convenience store with a few older "mechanical wheel" style pumps. Here was this idiot who would appear every few weeks, convinced that the price per gallon, the total price, and the amount pumped did not line up, and that we were robbing him blind.
Several times I went out there with a calculator to show him how it worked, and even though those rusty wheels groaned and squeaked - the figures always lined up within a few cents, left or right. ( a few meaning three, BTW)
He stopped coming once the pumps were replaced with digital ones.

Well, what ticks me off when listening to primitives and sub-primitives bitch and whine and moan and groan about high gasoline prices is that in April 2006, Bela Pelosi promised that if the Democrats were elected to control Congress in November 2006, they'd bring down gasoline prices.
Gasoline prices at the time (April 2006) were circa $1.20 per gallon.
Well, the Democrats, liberals, primitives, and sub-primitives all got their wish; the Democrats won Congress, although by a razor-thin margin.
Here it is, a year and a half into a two-year Democrat-controlled Congress, and gasoline is circa $3.50 per gallon.
What's up with that?
Of course, the primitives and sub-primitives will try to blame George Bush, inevitably, but they can't get away with it. George Bush hasn't vetoed any Democrat bill bringing down gasoline prices.
In fact, George Bush hasn't even been given any bill at all, by the Democrats to sign or to veto.
What's up with that?

Congress did give the Prez a flawed energy bill which he signed that included little in the way of creating additional energy sources such as nuclear but that's another story.

Warning for any thin skinned liberals....or others.....what might be considered as racist remarks follow.
I was born and raised in the south where half the population was black. Blacks would pump there own gas way before self-service pumps were popular. They would always, and I mean always, drain the last drop of gas out of the hose after cutting off the pump. This meant that the next customer had to pay for the gas it took to refill the hose. Maybe TiT is always the victim of a 'hose drainer'.
Another trick of blacks and whites, were the old hand gas pumps with the 10 (?) gallon glass bowl on top. You'd hand pump gas up into the glass container on top, wait until it settled down and drain the gas down to a line marked on the glass denoting the # of gallons remaining. People would drain the gas down to the 'top'of the measurement line, not the middle of the line like you were supposed to. ....and all this was when gas was less that a quarter a gallon.

Hey, I remember those days when gas was that cheap. Two bucks would last you 2 weeks.
