Obama’s Veterans to Work initiative is a bad deal for progressives
Helping people break through barriers and overcoming obstacles is a one of the core beliefs of liberals and progressives. Earlier this week, President Obama announced his plans for an initiative that would help veterans find work when they returned home from active duty. This plan accomplishes some noble goals. The problem with this initiative is not in the achievements, but in the process of getting there.
The first problem is using the tax code as an incentive. We are constantly arguing for the closure of tax loopholes, yet were willing to support another one because it helps veterans. We need to stop enforcing legislation through the tax code. It is bad business and a big reason why we are in the position we are in now. If we want to help veterans, we need to expand programs to help veterans. We can increase the funding of GI bill program; we can set up a veterans work administration whose goal is to find military veterans employment, we can give free vocational training to veterans. There are many programs that we can set up that don’t require the use of the tax code and give more tax breaks to corporate America.
The second problem is it gives an unfair disadvantage to civilian job seekers. By giving a tax break to corporations to hire veterans, you are creating a system that “prices out†civilians from the work force. This doesn’t fall in line with our egalitarian beliefs. Instead of hiring based on who is the more capable person, the decision becomes purely economic. This fails our sense of logic. We can give assistance to those that need it, but to directly undermine the process by making it cheaper to hire a veteran compared to a civilian goes too far.
There are a lot of things we can do to help veterans after they return from active duty. This initiative is the wrong approach. It doesn’t pass the litmus test for liberal ideology, and ultimately is bad for America.
So are the DUmmies now opposed to affirmative action? I bet not...instead of purely economic, they would prefer purely racial.

Liberals put up a lot of the obstacles people are facing today. And if you dare do too well they want to punish one for doing so.

The low post count makes this look suspiciously like an incautious mole trying a weeeee bit too hard to get them to embarass themselves with vet hate.

1. This was done before and it did work a little
what really put many of the Nam vets around here to work was the Postal Service and other GOVERNMENT JOBS that are no longer available.
The United States Postal Service has around 600,000 employees, working under ridiculously expensive union contracts.
Most of them are engaged in moving bulk mail, which no one wants to receive, charging rates far below cost.
-
This doesn’t fall in line with our egalitarian beliefs. Instead of hiring promoting based on who is the more capable highest senority person,
And there, ladies and gentlemen, you have the core workings of union membership. Ability and most capable doesn't even enter the picture.

I hate to break it to the DUmmies, but the majority of employees will hire a veteran over a similar qualified civilian almost every single time.

What they really hate about this is 2 things, Veterans and Work.

Those programs are already funded and in place you moran. It's called the VA.
Honestly I don't think that tax program is needed. I know plenty of people that willingly hire veterans over civilians now. If anything the military spouses are the ones having difficulty finding employment.

5. I think it is a great idea. Proud of you Mr President.
It is Progressives kids who serve in the military, keep that in mind. There are very few republican veterans.
What?? :mental:

The only time they show any concern is when veterans come home in a box, and that concern was only to bash Bush. You may have noticed they aren't wailing and gnashing their teeth over combat deaths like they did when Bush was president. If they had been sincere they would still be screaming, war crimes, impeachment etc.

Because it infringes on the entitlement mentality.
Which makes it ultimately good for America.
Suck it, DUmmies.

Well, there's no doubt that many young men join the military to escape the poverty and hatred of democrat homes.
I suspect, though, that the discipline, confidence, responsibility, and love of country they're exposed to while in uniform
result in most of them becoming rethugs.
Of course, the officer corps will always be Republican, as it has been for at least the last hundred years.

Yep, The vets I have hired are the hardest working, most disciplined workers I've seen for a long time.
I have seen first hand that they work a situation, not the situation work them. I have a late 20's college
grad with an Ivy MBA come into my office and have a civil discourse on why he didn't get the position that he had told the office was his. I told him, "...got the job because he was still here when I leave at night, and is one of the first ones in the office when I'm here."
But, but, but I have an MBA!
Yeah, but he has a work ethic.
I'll hire a qualified vet every time
