Biblical Scholars Challenge Pelosi's 'Scripture' Quote

(CNSNews.com) - House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) is fond of quoting a particular passage of Scripture. The quote, however, does not appear in the Bible and is "fictional," according to biblical scholars.

In her April 22 Earth Day news release, Pelosi said, "The Bible tells us in the Old Testament, 'To minister to the needs of God's creation is an act of worship. To ignore those needs is to dishonor the God who made us.' On this Earth Day, and every day, let us pledge to our children, and our children's children, that they will have clean air to breathe, clean water to drink, and the opportunity to experience the wonders of nature."

Cybercast News Service repeatedly queried the speaker's office for two days to determine where the alleged Bible quote is found. Thus far, no one has responded.

Distinguished biblical scholars, however, cast doubt on the existence of the passage.

John J. Collins, the Holmes professor of Old Testament criticism and interpretation at Yale Divinity School, said he is totally unfamiliar with Pelosi's quotation.

"(It's) not one that I recognize," Collins told Cybercast News Service. "I assume that she means this is a paraphrase. But it wouldn't be a close paraphrase to anything I know of."

Claude Mariottini, a professor of Old Testament at Northern Baptist Theological Seminary, told Cybercast News Service the passage not only doesn't exist - it's "fictional."

"It is not in the Bible," Mariottini said. "There is nothing that even approximates that."

Other scholars agree that nothing remotely resembling it can be found in any version of the Scriptures - Old Testament or New Testament.

"The quote does not exist in the Old Testament, neither in the New Testament," said the Rev. Andreas Hock, a doctor of Scripture who teaches in the Roman Catholic archdiocese of Denver's St. John Vianney Seminary.

"Even in pieces or bits, (it) cannot be found in the Old Testament," he added.

Interestingly, Pelosi has mentioned the quote before, Mariottini noted.

"In truth, (she) has used this 'passage' in many different ways, and all of those usages have nothing to do with the Bible whatsoever," he said.

Oops...guess she "mis-spoke" ala Hitlery.   :whatever:

So many have comaplined with bitter tears about how "religion" has unleashed so much horror throughout the centuries. The briefest of strolls through DU will be sufficient to assemble a Bill of Indictment.

It isn't religion that is the culprit, it is power hungry rogues manipulating religious sentiment with misapplied or fabricated injunctions. Would that the indicters take Mrs Pelosi to task for her demagogury.

This reminds me of the time, in 2000, when Alphonse Capote Gore talked about his favorite Biblical phrase being "John 16:3."

I'm no scholar of the Bible, but even I knew Alphonse Capote Gore really meant "John 3:16".

Anyway, I have no idea what John 16:3 says, but apparently it says something with which Alphonse Capote Gore isn't, or wasn't, likely to agree.

Apparently Mr Gore:

A) doesn't read his Bible

B) has never seen a field goal kicked at a football game on TV

John 16:3
They will do such things because they have not known the Father or me.

Was algore referring to his Daddy?

Thank you, lug-nut, sir.

That sounds exactly familiar.

I guess I remember it because it was a comment Alphonse Capote Gore made in front of dozens, scores, of journalists, and none of them had any knowledge about what he meant, and what he said, and so no one questioned him, thinking John 16:3 was probably something good, whatever it was.

I suppose that's what happens when you have reporters idolatrizing someone, and there was never any doubt the media in 2000 loved Alphonse Capote Gore.

It disturbs me that someone of Nancy Pelosi's lofty position in our government would use a made up Bible quote to further her and her ilk's political agenda.  It disturbs me for religious reason.  It disturbs me because our "leaders" are arrogant enough to do something so easily exposed as a lie and not care.

This makes me wonder if Rev. Pelosi is familiar with Revelation 22: 18, 19.

No, but she's definitely familiar with Revalon No. 12.

I wonder what her constituents think out in California? Don't they burst into flames at the mere mention of a bible? :-)

Yes.  To their kind, the strict adherence to the constitutionally mandated Separation of Church and Democrats is more vital to the preservation of the United States than the undeniable right of Unnatural Separation of Developing Baby From the Warm Safety of the Womb.

Don't forget the mandated separation of working people from their income.   :censored: dims.
